I didn't read through all of the posts but just to address a couple of things - for certain professions college is not optional. For example, I wanted to be an accountant, I needed a degree. Second, for many, in state schools are the ONLY affordable option for college so to that extent, they may not just be able to choose another school. This survey only addressed state schools, which are funded by state taxpayer dollars.
So with that being said, if the only option for you to get a job in your desired profession was to go to a STATE SCHOOL in your home state and that school openly spoke to students about how Trump is great and the only right way to think is to be a trump supporter, offered anti abortion rhetoric, etc, you would all be okay with this? The only reason you all are upset with it is because it is traditionally left wing views that are presented on college campuses. But let's say it was the other way around and everything around you seemed to discourage any left wing views. That wouldn't bother any of you?
Good luck getting an answer as I asked that. Obviously they all think this is a fake thing that is happening and Desantis MUST be making it all up. SMH
I thought I made myself clear, but I'll elaborate.
It's not a concern of mine because I would teach my son better, and part of that is equipping him to not be brainwashed by right wing nutjobs. It would be his decision whether to change schools, drop the class, etc. if a professor was hardcore but regardless he would be able to push back with logical arguments because of what I would teach him.
Second of all, and I didn't say this earlier, but there is a reason why students are more likely to be exposed to progressive views in college, and that's because right wing views are more likely to be based on falsehoods and do not hold up to the scrutiny of critical thinking.
I'm not saying intelligent people cannot have more conservative views; I am speaking of more extreme views. I am saying that people with good critical thinking skills will not adapt extreme right wing views.
And no, De Santis has no credibility with me. Because he's saying it's happening bears no connection to whether or not it actually is. I already explained why he would make it up. I could elaborate on that, but in short, he wants to run for president and the direction of the Repub party is clear. You must embrace the grievance politics to succeed.

I agree that it’s like a big boogeyman that is being weaponized (I agree with JennP).
Historically, higher Ed is to expand the mind, being exposed to x, y, and z, philosophical thoughts, and keg stands. I also agree that college kids should be viewed as adults and parents don’t have a leg to stand on to run and complain about the coursework. It should be on the student if he or she has an issue.
I have a degree and I’ve had professors who were on all sides of the political spectrum like all students have. Generally professors are accepting of students with opposing views and encourage them to properly present or defend an opposing viewpoint or critique.
Agree with you both but you'll never convince Henny Penny using logic. In her world, schools are out to get you, science and medicine are out to get you, the Democrats are out to get you and on and on and on. I've never seen someone so mistrusting of the world.
Anyway, there is zero logic in this argument. 99.9% of professors are there to simply do their job, educate your child to the best of their ability and in no way do they have any sinister agenda to "indoctrinate" your kid into some specific way of thinking. DeSantis is a clown who should be focusing on actual matters of concern in his state instead of fanning the flames of phony "university mind control".
At the end of the day, everyone has free thought. Just because a professor shares his own opinions doesn't mean you need to agree. Trying to shield young adults from varying thought processes and opinions is detrimental to their growth and takes away from the entire college experience. We're trying way too hard nowadays to make the world soft and squishy for kids. It's unfortunate.
So you would be ok for your kids to vote Republican? You wouldn’t try and convince them otherwise?
Why wouldn't I be ok with that? I'm not raising my kids to be my clones. I'm raising them to be intelligent, critically thinking adults with good values and their own opinions. They are free to decide for themselves how to vote, what to support and how they want to live their lives.
I find that hard to believe you as didn’t you have a problem with your own family supporting Trump?
I don't particularly give a $hit what you find hard to believe.
So you haven’t given your family a hard time about Trump. Yes or no would suffice.

I would never try to convince my children to vote against their beliefs. Their beliefs are their own. My husband and I share our values with them, but once they are adults they will follow their own path and develop their own values.
That is great. I hope you will actually do that when they turn voting age as I can’t see many on this board doing that with their strong beliefs and how they argue with their own family now about politics.
What do you know about how anyone on this board is in their home with their families? Oh right. You don't. You make such odd comments.
I don’t?

It IS happening and maybe when your kid is old enough you will see how true it is. Funny how people are ONLY brainwashed by the right. I am independent and see both sides and don’t see how you can say only the right can brainwash.

Exactly.
It's not my business as a parent to control my children's beliefs, especially when they are grown adults.
But you find it ok to control your family and strangers online. Gotcha.

I am not really saying this to you because at this point I know you do not understand this, but your sample size proves nothing. We all tend to surround ourselves with like minded people so your anecdotes mean nothing, as others can counteract with their own, opposite anecdotes.
If you are concerned about the education your children are receiving, I would encourage you to pull your children out of that school and find a different one because you shouldn't be spending money for something that is causing you alarm.

ITA. There is no worse argument than someone telling you they "know a person" as if that's applicable to the population as a whole.

I am not the one who has gone online and argued about Trump with family. It’s obvious you want everyone to agree with you and can’t deal when they don’t and your m.o. is to just tell everyone to move on. Very rude, especially when it is people you know IRL.

No obsession. Just the truth that you claim you will let your kids make their own decisions about politics but you won’t even allow your own family to do so without attacking them too like you do here. I have already allowed my kids to have their opinions as who they have and would vote for. I also don’t tell friends and family to move on because their opinions are different then my own. You have to be right all the time. Must get very cumbersome for your family to deal with you.

It IS happening and maybe when your kid is old enough you will see how true it is. Funny how people are ONLY brainwashed by the right. I am independent and see both sides and don’t see how you can say only the right can brainwash.
Does your child live at home or on campus?

Sigh, where did I say I was concerned? I am saying Desantis is telling the truth as much as you don’t want to believe it.
Please show us the proof.

My child has done both.

I am so curious about what these surveys will say. Like, how do you properly characterize beliefs? Lots of bigots think that caring about racial equality and learning about race inequality in history makes someone a left-leaning fanatic, and not just a decent human being.
