Since i will not be having a shower and I am going to be on strict bed rest beginning next week we felt it was necessary to purchase some of the big items in advance. My mom purchased the furniture, my MIL and FIL the complete layette and other items. I purchased the car seat, pack and play, glider and ottoman etc. As of right now everything is at my in laws house and the furniture will be delivered closer to my due date.
sorry to hear you have to go on bedrest 
if, while you're in bed, you would like to shop for baby items (especially diapers, creams, formula), I found diapers.com and drugstore.com to be great.... free shipping if over $50, and competitive prices.....

I do not plan to have a shower, but will register anyway as family members who want to buy something for us have something to choose from. When we will start buying stuff, I have no idea.

My shower was super late (37.5 weeks) and I didn't buy anything before hand. The tuesday after my shower my mom and I bought the last couple of things we needed.
People bring gifts after DC is born.
ALSO, don't buy too many things like diapers, wipes, formula, etc, etc, you don't know what your baby will tolerate or be allergic to or fit in well. Plus you clean up at the hospital. We only had 1 package of diapers when I left to be induced and didn't have to buy for a month.

I have been buying lots of clothes. Everything else, I am waiting for my shower and whatever I do not receive as gifts, I will then go and purchase them for myself.
