he went to an ER here on LI that diagnosed the flu without doing a nasal swab?
Yes.
that is scary! everyone should know that they there is a test to check for the flu.
but please, realize this year is not hyped up. i totally respect your feeling on the flu shot. but this is not a media hype type thing. in my almost 11 years in the ER i have never seen anything like this.
Curious, since your in the trenches...
Are the people mostly older/younger? already have compromised immune systems?
Or are you seeing a variety of people?

it is everybody, babies and elderly and of course people with compromised immune systems get hit the hardest but the ER is full of otherwise healthy 20,30,40 etc year old people.

I have another question. Out of sheer curiousity. Of the people tha show up at the ER and are diagnosed with true blue flu- what is the treatment? Do they get admitted? Do they get sent home? Meds? The reason i am asking is I wonder if the majority of people that go to the ER with flu symptoms really need to be there. Now of course, I understand that if you are having respiratory issues, are in at risk group for serious complications etc then yes of course you need to go to the ER But how many of those otherwise healthy 20, 30 40, year olds that you mention really need to be at the ER? As opposed to their own dr or a walk in clinic? Sometimes I feel like people have a tendancy to use the ER as their personal Dr's office. To me- the ER is just that- the EMERGENCY room. As in, it's an emergency. The reason I bring this up is- maybe the people with flu who are sitting in the ER when there is not much the ER can do for them are part of the issue. Spreading the flu even faster. Taxing and stressing the already overworked ER staff. Taking resources away from others who TRULY need to be there (whether it be due to flu or something else) KWIM? Just curious to hear the thoughs of a health care professional ...

Did YOU get the flu shot?
An article in yesterday's paper said the flu shot is 60% effective. It also said this is a moderate year for the flu and we are halfway through the season. The 2003-2004 season was ten times worse.

Did YOU get the flu shot?
Usually I get one every year free from my job. This year I skipped it. I have only given DD the flu shot once in her five years. DH never has taken a flu shot before. However after hearing everything that is going on this year and seeing all the FB post of people who are sick and whose kids are sick with 104 fevers, I decided we were going to get it. DD got hers yesterday at the ped. There were 10 other kids there getting it too. DH and I went to Walgreens today. It was crazy the amount of people going to get it. The person behind me was the last one to get it because they ran out.
I know the shot is not 100% effective but 66% is better than 0%. We live in NYC and commute on crowded trains, DH works in a business dealing with 100s of people day in and day out. DD goes to school. There are too many ways for us to get in contact with it.

Honestly there are a lot of people who come to the ER to get the diagnosis, but could just as easily be treated at a walk in clinic or their own doctor. There are people not in the high risk category who need more treatment, sometimes IV fluids, respiratory medicine etc. but more of them end up getting discharged from the ER and not admitted.
You would be amazed what people come to the ER for!!

Re: Did YOU get the flu shot?
I did not nor did DS and DH. Ds was diagnois with the flu on Friday. Knock on wood he was back to himself by Saturday. We were all put on Tamiflu mainly because Dh had heart surgery last month.
I never get the shot and this is the first year I did not give the shot to ds. I honestly feel that he would/ is healthy enough to get through this. If he had a compromised immune system then I would have given to him.
My dh should have gotten it. not sure why his doctors didn't give it to him as they discussed that they would give it to him.
