Why do people not get it for their kids? Just wondering. What are you worried will happen? Other than a child with a severe egg allergy, has anyone ever had their child react badly to the shot?
We don't get the shot. Dd is too young to get it, but if she was older I still wouldn't give it to here because of the preservatives the shot contains, like formaldehyde. I don't like the sound of that. So DH and I will take the risk, but as neither of us has ever had the shot or the flu I am not too worried.

I've heard a lot of "flu shot doesn't mean you won't get the flu anyway" which can be true...BUT having the shot CAN help minimize flu symptoms. My son got the flu 2 years ago...he was dealing with it OK, we were surprised he tested positive for the flu. I'll never forget the doctor telling us that his symptoms were lessened because of having received his shot. He also had seen kids who were very very sick because they weren't vaccinated.
Why do people not get it for their kids? Just wondering. What are you worried will happen? Other than a child with a severe egg allergy, has anyone ever had their child react badly to the shot?
No my child has never reacted badly to the flu shot because my child has never had the flu shot. However, both have had reactions to shots in the past as did DH and I as children so I know they are predisposed.
That said, yes, I do know of many people kids and adults that have had a very bad reaction to the shot. Even kids who previously never reacted to that shot or another shot. A little boy in DS's preschool ended up with some rare syndrome from the flu shot where he had a rash all over his body for weeks and his liver was affected and he had to take meds for a long time to normalize his liver. The specialist said he was lucky because it could have led to a life-long liver problem. It was confirmed by the ped and an infectious disease specialist that this was a reaction to the flu shot. I can't remember the name of it off hand but, if you google it you will find it. I also know of a little boy that had some sort of muscle paralysis in one or both of his legs from the shot. A friend's DD got very sick from it as well - fever, body aches etc.. My aunt got Guillian Barre Disease (sp?) and died.
Bottom line is - it's not a myth - it's a documented fact even from the company that makes the vaccine that you can have a SERIOUS adverse reaction to the flu shot. It is rare but, it happens. I'm not sure why people don't get that someone that has a child that reacts to shots would deem this one not worth the risk.
Also - I'm not sure that what I've seen in real life supports what you wrote in the first paragraph. In DD's ballet class a girl that is 3 just got over the flu - she was hospitalized for 24 hrs it got so bad. She was vaccinated. Another good friend's entire house hold had it - they were not vaccinated - they were all better in a matter of two- three days (aside from a lingering cough) including her 6 mo old son.

Like anything else in life, reactions are all over the place. Someone who is vaccinated for the flu may still get the flu and get very ill, and someone who doesn't get the vaccine may not have bad flu symptoms...its varying BUT there is research out there that definitely states that more often than not, getting the shot can reduce severity of symptoms should you get the flu.
i'm honestly not arguing with anyone, i was just wondering about reactions and if anyones child has had an adverse one. I've heard of rare but serious reactions but in my opinion this also applies to any vaccine our children receive throughout life...its just that the benefits to the majority seriously outweigh the rare negative effects.
It's a personal decision, I totally understand why people choose not to! I just wasn't sure of the exact reasons.

You are absolutely right - the same is true for all vaccines (regarding potential reactions). The difference is that this particular vaccine is not a guarantee - it only *might* protect you against one strand of the flu *if* they get it right. For me that makes the consideration different than for a shot like the MMR. So for me, the benefits of this shot do not outweigh the risks for my kids (that tend to react to shots). In addition, this is a shot they would have to get every year and every year be exposed to the reaction and it's effects as well as the "junk" in the shot. Also, it is not required for school (in NY at least) where the others are.

Did YOU get the flu shot?
The only time I got the flu shot was the only time I got what I assume was the flu. Haven't gotten one since, don't plan to anytime in the future.
DS got one because DH is a teacher, and we were afraid of the random germs he might bring home.

Re: Did YOU get the flu shot?
No. When I was a child I got a really bad reaction so I've always been scared to get it since. I don't get it for my DD either....every year I live in fear that we'll get the flu, but I guess if it's going to happen, it's going to happen-our immune systems can handle it!

Did YOU get the flu shot?
No. I probably never will.
I'm currently sick but nothing I can't handle. Lots of fluids, lot of rest.
If most people get them & there is no shortage of them - then why is there such an outbreak this year? That's what I don't understand.

Re: Did YOU get the flu shot?
No, I never have, I feel like I can handle it if I did (I know I say that now & I'd probably regret it if I did get the flu) I'm so up in the air about giving it to DD. I still didn't give it to her because I feel that is cruel to give her a shot that I wouldn't get myself. On the other hand, she's only 1 & a half, what if she gets it & is too little to handle it? We've been lucky & healthy so far but after I read up on it a little more I'll decide if I'm going to give it to her. Sorry I got off the original topic of ME getting it, all the other thoughts just came out with it

I don't think she was singling you out just asking out of curiousity. I think you have a medical reason for skipping it.
As far as myth I don't think V that anyone was saying adverse reactions are a myth. Some were saying getting the flu from the shot was a myth. Any medicine or vaccine has the possibility of causing an adverse reaction.
I'm curious..the 3 year old was it an actual strain covered by the shot. Bc for example I know someone who has the flu but it was not a strain covered. As far as another family got barely sick while one is hospitalized. I don't see how the shot has anything to do with it. I don't see how not getting it gave you a less severe case of the flu. What if they had different strains not all are the same and even with 2 people get the same thing and have different reactions. I liken it to a cold. One person gets a bit stuffy and achy for a few days, the next needs a nublizer and ends up with broncitis or pneumonia. I see that with my kids. One gets 101 and is sick for 3 days while the other gets 104 and is out for 5 days and miserable.
Again I could be wrong but I think you are arguing apples and oranges. I don't think anyone thinks adverse reactions, while rare are a myth. I think they were referring to getting the flu from the shot. Also I think the above poster was just genuinely curious about why someone doesn't give it.
BTW on a playdate recently the mom was saying only one in the family got the shot (long story). One child was sick as a dog, one child got the shot was healthy, one didn't get the shot but also tested positive (ped tested all the kids to see if were getting it). The sick one and the child without the shot tested positive BUT mom said she felt off for like a day no fever but was fine by the next day. So I think you can get a range of responses to a virus and you never know.

I know how you feel about shots and totally understand just wanted to point out that this statement isn't completely true. Yes they guess is right but the shots we are forced to get are not 100% protection either. I can tell you that ped told me when family had shingles that the CP shot for example gives like 90% or so protection and you can still get a mild case. Even the MMR etc are not always 100%. Which is why we get boosters. But just as your family has medical reasons to not get it someone with a kid with asthma etc the shot might be a more mmr to them since nothing is a guarantee. I know parents whose healthy child almost died from Strep wishes they had a shot for that. Shot no shot, everything is a crap shoot and no matter what you pick you roll the dice and hope for the best. Nothing is a guarantee.

Re: Did YOU get the flu shot?
Yes. I never used to, but started getting it when I was pregnant with my first. I get it every year now. Not only to protect myself, but to protect my kids and the kids I work with (I work in a special needs preschool). I just honestly see absolutely no downside to it.

Depending on your insurance sometimes CVS is cheaper than the doctor copay or dr charges. CVS is usually around $30 and in the past we subitted to insurance and they reimbursed us for all or part. It cost me more money one year to get it through my dr.

Your welcome! They are a pain to get my new office always gets them but the old office would only give them to the geriatric patients. So I had to search around. I don't think CVS or walgreens ever took any of the insurances I have had over the years.
