DIY fencing: gate cost question.
We are going to replace the wood fencing that goes accross the front of our yard. the rest of the yard is various chainlink. Anyway, the posts are in great shape and already there so it should be a pretty easy job.
My questions is about the gate. DH and I thought it would be easy to make one out of a section of stockade. We saw plans online. My mom says I am nuts and I need to put up the fence, measure and pay a company to make one.
Does anyone know the cost of getting a gate made? Or even better, has anyone made their own gate? How did it work out? I planned on just cutting the stockade to size, putting in diaganol beam and viola!

DIY fencing: gate cost question.
When we did our fence I priced DIY and havign a company come in and do it. Having ssomeone do it was only 300 more and not worth the time for me to spend.
I would price both out and see what the difference it. it may not be worth the time and aggrevation

Re: DIY fencing: gate cost question.
I've made several of my own gates. I have stockade fence, and I wanted the fence to blend in, so I just took a section of stockade fence, cut two pieces of 2x4 to fit diagonally from the top cross-piece to the middle cross-piece and the bottom cross-piece to the middle cross-piece. Couple of hinges, and a latch, and I was all set. Didn't take long, and the one gate is still in place over 10 years later (one gate came down because we extended the house past where the gate was, but it was still in good shape at the time).

\ Thanks. We did this! It's not perfect. But, it was really easy. The issue we have it that there is a gap between the gate and fence because cutting it one more slat wide would have been too wide. But, otherwise it looks great. It is really high on the bottom. The other fence was put right to the ground and rotted. (the old homeowners amaze me) So we put it up a few inches and the ground is SO unlevel in the middle that we now have about a foot gap under the fence in the middle. I guess we have to add some dirt to build it up.
