i mean come on... a chick in Delaware got 5 years for the same thing..
the college kids? didn't they get less then that ( it was a hotel room right?)
the boy went to Gettysburg- I know people who were freinds with him- so I followed the story- and he was from NY I think?

I think she should be held responsible, but isn't murder by law a premeditated act? I find it hard to believe that she planned her delivery and the leaving of the infant in the bathroom of a Walmart.
The article said
"The jury found Shorter guilty of felony murder for causing the baby's death while committing first-degree cruelty to children."
I believe "felony murder" is different than premeditated murder & means (in simple terms) murder that happen as a result of commiting another crime.

There are different circumstances. But my point was that you should not say one person should get a lighter sentence just because another murderer got let off easy. States have different laws. That is what i meant about not comparing
well i think that if you are found guilty of murder... you are guilty of murder.. and as a citizen of the great ole US of A
i mean come on... a chick in Delaware got 5 years for the same thing..
Many murders get less
I see the point of different state laws but a LIFE sentence...
nah....can't see that
But i guess people just gotta know where they can kill and where they cannot
Its true. I mean take the 2 cases of Scott Peterson in CA, got death for killing his wife an unborn son. Then Mark Hacking in Utah killed his wife and unborn baby and got only 5 years! Ridiculous
But my point is that you can't tell me that Scott should have gotten a lighter sentence b/c mark did. Can't Compare.

IMO, life sentences should be reserved for cold blooded killers. Meaning, pre-mediated, they show no remorse and would do it again.
I really do not believe she deserves that sentence. What she did was heinous! But I don’t think she was trying to kill the baby, she got scared. She’s very stupid, but not a cold blooded murderer.
I understand what you are saying. But leaving the baby there to die was pretty cold blooded, IMO.
I agree, only someone without morals could do something like that and without a heart.

good point
still think life in prison was WAY out there on that verdict
unless there is more to the story

Re: Do you agree with this verdict?
see, i DON'T see the point of States having different laws for the exact same crime.
It's sad that this woman could have been in an entirely different State, committed the EXACT same crime, and walk away with a much lighter sentence.
it's very sad!

I agree because I can't figure out how a 27 yr old woman wouldn't know she was pregnant and she couldn't dropped the baby off at a church, precinct or hospital instead of leaving in a bathroom for dead. JMHO

why don't you? the judge admits she has shown remorse. I guess to me it seems harsh - life in prison.
Charles Manson is up for parole every so often.
I don't believe that Manson is ever up for parole. He was sentenced to death, but the death penalty was repealed and his sentence was converted to life in prison without the chance of parole.
In this case, I don't know what to think. I personally don't see how anyone can't know that they are pregnant. I think it is just a deep denial. My guess is that she could use some mental help. Not sure that prison is going to help her in that aspect.

I don't see the point either...
I do agree with the sentence and think it should be the same everywhere...you murder someone (unless in self defense or to protect your children) then life in prison (or even the death penalty) is what you deserve.

i agree that she should be held accountable, but life is a bit much. but, has she done this sort of thing before? that could play into the sentencing..

I had to google this because it just seems so unbelivable. Turns out that he will be up for parole for the first time in 2007. Other members of the "Family" have been up for parole a few times. I am surprised by that because he was originally sentenced to death. Interesting how things can change over the years.

I think it is other members of the family. I honestly can't believe that any of them would be up for parole.

I agree with it!
First, she is 27 y/o...not a child...how can she not know she was preggo??
Second, all she had to do was drop the child off at a hospital and there would have been no questions asked and the child might still be alive today.
same here....women have options now. Bring it to a clinic or hospital...Dont leave it in a bathroom to die???

i just did a search and found:
March 1997 Manson is denied parole (for the ninth time) in a hearing broadcast live on Court TV. Manson responds by saying, "That's cool....I'm not saying I wasn't involved [in Helter Skelter]. I'm just saying that I did not break God's law....Thank you."
April 2002 Manson is refused parole for the tenth time at a hearing he refused to attend. Manson, now 67, will next be up for parole in 2007

thanks for finding that. It makes me SICK whenever he is up for parole sitting there in front of the panel with that f*cking swastika on his forehead!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Re: Do you agree with this verdict?
hmmm. I don't agree with the severity of the punishment. IMO she didn't actually commit murder. She abandoned a child in a public place (not a desireable or condoned place, but still a public place- not a garbage can)

Re: Do you agree with this verdict?
I don't agree with the verdict. I've been in a similar situation personally. Even though she wasn't proven to be insane, there's no way a sane person could do that.
Sad all the way around, but too harsh.
