Re: Do you agree with this verdict?
I don;t have enough info. I would also wonder about her mental state.
After giving birth, I'm pretty sure a woman isn't in her most clear and right mind, just because of sheer shock to the body.
I know my SIL went from the delivery room to the psych ward..so you never know

why don't you? the judge admits she has shown remorse. I guess to me it seems harsh - life in prison.
Charles Manson is up for parole every so often.
YEah he is up for parole but he doesn't get released nor do I think he will..as far as this woman is concerned YES I agree this lady is a frickin dirtbag

Re: Do you agree with this verdict?
- First off, how did she not know she was pregnant and Second, I don't care how shocked you were, you DON'T abandon your child for ANY reason! Sorry, but what a dumb b&tch!
I'm not trying to be rude, but stuff like that infuriates me.

I agree because I can't figure out how a 27 yr old woman wouldn't know she was pregnant and she couldn't dropped the baby off at a church, precinct or hospital instead of leaving in a bathroom for dead. JMHO
I agree. How can a woman (not a child) not know she's pregnant? Besides, she didn't have to dump the baby. Church, hospital, even a stranger on the street would have protected that infant. Why just leave the baby to die? NO HEART!

I think she should be held responsible, but isn't murder by law a premeditated act? I find it hard to believe that she planned her delivery and the leaving of the infant in the bathroom of a Walmart.
The article said
"The jury found Shorter guilty of felony murder for causing the baby's death while committing first-degree cruelty to children."
I believe "felony murder" is different than premeditated murder & means (in simple terms) murder that happen as a result of commiting another crime.
This is correct. You do not need premeditation (for the "murder") to commit felony murder. Felony murder is death that results during the commission of a felony. If you meet the requirements for the felony and a death results from the commission of the felony, you can be found guilty of felony murder.
I think the sentence is a bit harsh, but judges are given discretion in terms of sentencing. There are minimum and maximum sentences for each crime, and the judge can decide how harsh or lenient the sentence should be. This is why some people get a much harsher sentence than others even though the circumstances are similar.
