Do you donate blood?

I have just recently starting giving regular donations and it's so easy! I feel like I would hate for there to be some blood shortage when someone needs it the most and maybe my pint will be the one that can save a life.

No. I 'm too close to the weight minimum and they won't let me. I would if I could.

Do you donate blood?

I did direct donations for a while, platelets too if they were needed.
Haven't done it in a while and I really should as a universal donor.

I'm gonna get on my high horse now so i apologize in advance. I am anemic too but that is no excuse...if I get rejected cuz my iron is too low I take my vitamins and eat dark leafy food that night then I go back the next day! It saves lives and you never know when you or someone you love will need that help. I gave religiously before I was pregnant and I was also a marrow donor. This is something you can do that costs you nothing. So bring an I pod and take the 30min to save a life. Its a little pintch and im a baby when it comes to pain. If you get dizzy during tell them and the nurses/techs will take steps to help you. Then sit afterwords for 15 min and stock up on the free cookies and juice so you don't have to worry about getting dizzy or passing out.

Yes, it does matter. It also depends on your severity. My anemia isnt managed with "leafy green vegetables and an OTC supplement. I almost DIED once due to cardiac issues due to my anemia. What works for you as an anemic DOES NOT work for people with more severe anemia. For some of us, its not as easily managed.

I was just going to post the question...If you take your vitamins and eat dark leafy food that night could you go back the next day? just curious.

I used to do it often. I haven't been able to because I've been pregnant for much of the last 3 years Chat Icon

I tried to donate last spring but my iron was too low.

Re: Do you donate blood?

Nope, I'm not allowed to due to being slightly underweight.

I am a registered organ donor though.

ive never donated before because getting blood drawn was my worst nightmare... but now that ive learned to deal with it i may donate in the future.

Me too, but I the reason I got used to it was b/c I went through my own medical issues & now I am medically ineligible, but it might be temporary. I fall into the gray area that can vary by blood center. I will probably look into it the future.

I did donate blood & tissue to research though.

OP: what did you hear that leads you to believe blood isn't getting to people in need? Just curious-- never heard that before.

Yes. I used to randomly.

Now, my work does blood drives every 3-6 months, so I always donate when they do the drive.

Sadly, I'm the only person on a floor of about 15 people that donates Chat Icon

No.

It is hard enough for me to have a few vials drawn for myself. I also don't weigh enough at this point.

Yes but haven't recently because of either being pregnant or having traveled to certain countries. DH does because he wants to but he also gets incentives at work like time off for every time he donates.

I'm also jealous of all you underweight people Chat Icon

I apologize for those with "severe anemia" but then you should be on those horse pills/ or nasty liquid to get that under control for your own safety. Been on those and they are no fun and gag me...there is a bigger issue there and it is no joke. But in regards to the above question yes you can. I go through cycles where my iron is either way too low or boarderline. Before you can donate they do a finger stick to test your iron. There have been times I was boarderline and failed then the vitamins and greens helped to push me over the limit. I can feel when my iron is super low I have been dealing with this since I was a little kid so I know the symptoms. If I am really low I don't schedule a donation and I plan to take my hardcore iron pills. Then when I have leveled out I go

I used to, all the time. But I developed a blood disorder a few years ago and I can't donate anymore.

For the people who donate blood already - you should consider donating platelets as well. I hope to never need but it could save my life one day Chat Icon

Re: Do you donate blood?

I used to donate regularly at drives and at work

then they changed the 'rules' and apparently if you've been in England for more than 6 months between 1976 and 1981 (which i did, i lived there) then you might have mad cow disease Chat Icon and they don't want your blood.

it kills me because i'm O+ and would love to be able to donate like i used to!

Re: Do you donate blood?

I donate fairly regularly. I prefer doing the ALYX machine. They take just the red blood cells. It's a great thing to do if you pass out when they take blood. You don't actually lose any blood volume, the same as with platelets. They only take one part of the blood, but most of the liquid stays in, and they replace the volume of what they take out with other fluids, so you don't get that light-headed feeling.
