Do you have young toddlers? Tree Question

I have 2yr old twins & have tree gated. My friend just told me she thought it was so funny. She couldn't believe I did that.

Does anyone else gate the tree??

Do you have young toddlers? Tree Question

I don't but initially wanted to as my 21 month old DS is very handsy and never stops grabbing things he shouldn't. Surprisingly he is okay with the tree. He will grab an ornament here and there but we just made sure the non-breakable ornaments were at the bottom of the tree.

I have a 19m old and I do not gate my tree. She is not one to really do things she isn't supposed to though or else I prob would've.

Do you have young toddlers? Tree Question

Mine isn't because he could care less about it luckily. However, my tv and entertainment stand is gated off as he loves reaching for wires.
So my living room has a gate 365 days a year lmao

Re: Do you have young toddlers? Tree Question

I currently have a 2 year old and have had 2 toddlers before(my girls are now 6&7). I have never blocked off our tree. I put the breakable ornaments up high. Never had any problems.

Re: Do you have young toddlers? Tree Question

I have a 2.5 year old DS and he's a total nut. Surprisingly though he has not really touched the tree. We did put all soft ornaments on the bottom just in case and we had the gate ready if needed.

My tree isn't gated, but sometimes I definitely wish it was! I am constantly redirecting her away from the tree!

Do you have young toddlers? Tree Question

Mine isn't gated because I want to teach my ds not to touch it. He has to learn at some point so why not sooner than later

We never had too with my kids at that age, they never touched it. However, when my niece about the same age is over....she is all over it and I can totally see why my sister-in-law has to do it.

No gate. my 18 months old boys grab whatever ornaments they can reach, scream ball, and then throw it across the room. It's hilarious and drives me nuts. I got shatterproof ornaments so they don't break, I don't like the look of a gate around the tree.

Re: Do you have young toddlers? Tree Question

I have a 6yo and 2.5yo DSs. We have never gated the tree, but honestly we just have never had to! The boys have always been pretty good with the tree!

Now the first year we had the dog.....that is a whole different story!

I never had to do that with my kids. They were always good about not touching the decorations. I guess I was lucky in that department. But I have heard of others gating their trees.

No gate thankfully. DD does touch the ornaments and loves them. I didn't put any regular bulbs on this year and only a few breakable things near the top. She does sometimes pull on things a little but I just keep reminding her to be gentle.

This. My DD is 2.5. I didn't gate the last year or this year. She is very good about looking and not touching. But she's still only 2.5, and sometimes can't resist the urge, so I only put the cheaper/not fragile ornaments at the bottom.

Of course, twins are harder to watch, so gate it if that's what works for you! I'm sure next year you won't to.

Re: Do you have young toddlers? Tree Question

We gated last year. My DS is very high energy & constantly grabbing things he shouldn't no matter what we say or do. This year we decorated just the top half but he's tall for an almost 2 yr old & still pulls things down. It's a fight about a hundred times a day. The thinking was he has to learn, but that's laughable at this point; there is nothing being learned w this little Christmas monster. Lol He's lucky he's cute. ;) I wish we'd put up the gate again but at this point, we'll just deal w it until after the holiday.

Re: Do you have young toddlers? Tree Question

I never gated the tree. I taught DD to not touch it so when we were in other people's homes she would know how to behave around their tree.

I'm just not a fan of gating the tree off or moving all of the ornaments up.

Do you have young toddlers? Tree Question

I have a 21 month old, and the tree isn't gated - but he has been pretty good with it. he's curious... but when he touches I tell him No and he usually stops. I also put the really breakable stuff a little higher up.

If I had two, I might just gate it for my own sanity!
I don't think its weird, I think we all do what we need to Chat Icon

Do you have young toddlers? Tree Question

I gated mine last year DS was 14 months and still cruising. But honestly at the time I did it more because of our cat. DS reached through the gate if he really wanted. This year I have nothing and he is fine.

Re: Do you have young toddlers? Tree Question

I don't, but I have a friend that does - and it was suggested to me. dd is 13.5 months.
I have 2 friends with kids the same age and we all have different tactics:
-one friend's daughter takes all the ornaments off the tree, my friend just doesn't bother to put them back on lol
-one friend has her tree gated off
-and then there's me, who wouldn't let dd in the same room as the tree for the first week it was up lol

now I've exposed her to it, and she points and gets close to it, and likes touching the tree skirt, but is pretty good at backing away when I say no. if she's not listening, and starts touching, I can usually distract her onto something else.
