Do you know how to change a bulb when headlight is out on your car?
Just curious. DH isn't around, and I haven't had to do this before. DH suggested I let someone at my local gas station do it for me, and they wanted $40 to replace both bulbs (I brought the bulbs with me). I said no and drove away from the gas station. I felt like the price was crazy since the bulbs themselves were like $5 each, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't take more than 5 minutes to change each of them. Hopefully I don't screw this up. I'm auto mechanically challenged! LOL

I wouldn't have paid $40 for it either! I bet you could google it! Good luck!

Re: Do you know how to change a bulb when headlight is out on your car?
No clue but if DH wasn't around, I'd google it & do it myself.
If my friend can fix her washing machine on her own by youtubing it, I see no reason why I would pay a gas station to do it.

I have done it - it's pretty easy. The directions should be in your owner's manual.

Re: Do you know how to change a bulb when headlight is out on your car?
It depends on the car. Mine is pretty easy but DH's car- forget it. He has the hardest time getting the casing off every time he has to do it. He practically has to rip apart the whole front end. It's ridiculous how they made it. It takes him like an hour of screaming and cursing. I would never attempt that myself.

I could probably do it, but I just ask DH to take care of it. If he wasn't around I would find a way to do it myself, and if I couldn't, I would go to my FIL or a friend!

Take it to Jiffy Lube. They have done it for me a few times for free ( I bought the light). Try them.

Re: Do you know how to change a bulb when headlight is out on your car?
i have to admit i was in the same situation last month...and was charged $25 to replace one bulb
the back lights are easier then the headlights. I did though watch the mechanic do it and now i would be able to do it myself.
if you try it yourself, just remember you cannot touch the actual bulb with your hands; use a towel.
after i left and was annoyed about the price, but i had the old bulb and so I checked out the prices in store...it was about $15. so to give him $10 is a lot, but its really not bad at all imo.

My dad has done it and he's 80. I would ask him how before I would pay $40.

Re: Do you know how to change a bulb when headlight is out on your car?
I have a shop where I work so anything my car needs, I get done here.
I would never even consider that I could possibly do it myself!
I would never have youtubed mechanic things so thanks for this post!

Re: Do you know how to change a bulb when headlight is out on your car?
it depends on the car..b/c on my parents Volvo changing the headlight is a pain and you need to remove a lot of parts to get to it. some cars you can go into it from the front (or the trunk if its a backlight) and change it.
other cars, not so easy. $40 might not be so bad if they have to start taking parts out.

Re: Do you know how to change a bulb when headlight is out on your car?
It depends on the car . On the older models I have changed quite a few , but with my altima they have to take the headlight cover off ,and if you don't do it right the cover can get all foggy , so I let my mechanic do it .

Re: Do you know how to change a bulb when headlight is out on your car?
Actually most cars have the info in the owners manual. yes, I've done it several times on several types. Worst was the Hyundai. That thing was BRUTAL. Stupid clips.
Plus youtube has tons of how to videos as well.
I'm not a complete grease monkey but I am a car enthusaist. I love knowing I can handle that large machine under me. I would hate to feel it had power over my life. I need it, its a tool and like all tools it needs to be cared for. I refuse to be abused by the system that tries to profit off of conveinence. I mean way back in the day Auto Zone would put them in for like $15.
Most cars are pretty simple. Its even easier I think for women because our hands are smaller. For me it seems to ALWAYS be the one light in front of the battery, filter or something other than nearly blocks it. So having small hands comes in handy.

Re: Do you know how to change a bulb when headlight is out on your car?
I've done it before, on my old Corolla, which I had way before I met DH.
Now DH takes car of all car-related issues since it's his business! I sometimes think it would be quicker and easier to take it to someone though!

YES! That is my DH's car and everytime a headlight goes out for him he DREADS it. Takes him an hour of bytching and yelling to get that thing off! I swear they do it so you take it to the dealer to get fixed. I swear it's a scam!

This. I watched DH do it once, and with the instructions from the manual, it was easy to do myself the next time.

ha ha..i was my father's little grease monkey b/c i was always the one to help every time something had to be fixed..why b/c my hands were smaller and could reach behind the rotors or some other part to yank something out..lol. Very true..sometimes small hands does work to an advantage.

Ironically, I actually replaced both of my truck headlights today.... One of them burned out this week, and today was the first chance I had to swap them.
