I like the square wood, I'd be afraid the iron would look dated in a few years as well. The wood seems timeless.

Good luck!

I threw in a wrench, if we do the wood, I think I like the square with a chamfer.

I really love the wood with the iron, I've never seen it like that before. Just my opinion but I think it adds something whimsical and classy to it. Chat Icon

What style is the house?? Is it a craftman style??

I don't care for the all wood unless it's in a mans den or library. I like the white balists better. But that's just my $.02 Chat Icon I think the white will look better against a gray wall rather than all wood.....

I have a 3 year old and the finger prints really aren't an issue either...

Not craftsman. It is a colonial style house.

Saw your pictures above...it is going to have the square newel (main post) at the bottom like that first one.

Maybe i'll remember to take a picture of the area tonight. Maybe that will help with a 'vision'

The first wood balusters look too chunky and massive. I like the lighter, airier look of the iron. I have wood balusters, but they are fairly thin.

They would be the 1 1/4 inch ones, so the thinner square ones. I know they come in 1 1/4 and 1 3/4 inch (I think).

eta: when I see this style of wood, I think it looks similar to an outside deck-but then other times I like it.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I chose iron just because that's what we just did a couple weeks ago. Chat Icon
Actually, when we were picking our pattern we came across that pic & loved it, but ended up going with a single twist, single birdcage, single twist, etc.

we just got rid of wrought iron to get wood so i'm very partial to wood!Chat Icon

dh liked the wrought iron, but i told him we're not getting rid of old wrought iron to get new wrought iron. plus, i felt the wrought iron didn't look good with our wood floors--which aren't stained. they are natural oak.

are you using bill? did you get quotes from him yet?Chat Icon

we are have exactly the same debate in my house, I like the iron, DH likes the wood. I'm looking forward to seeing the poll results on this one!

So funny b/c DH and I are the opposite, I like wood he likes the iron.

If you do wood, would you consider two-tone (white balusters with wood banister)? This is my favorite:

IMAGE

I voted for keep looking, not becuase i thought either was ugly, i just thought there was better out there. and this poster found it!! just my opinion though.
i think i didn't love the Wrought Iron b/c there was too much of it in the photo given, although this is typically what i prefer. The wood one for me was prettier, until PP found this!! i really like this for some reason!

I agree!! =) I wouldn't worry too much about the white getting dirty. Magic Erasers work wonders, and as long as you stay on top of wiping them down once in a while, I think they would be fine.

I usually prefer wood, but looking at the picture of your house I think the iron would look really nice!

DH hasn't decided whether to use someone yet...we haven't even gotten that far because I can't decide what I want. We also have to cover the existing treads, so this will be an interesting process.Chat Icon

I took pictures of our painted foyer last night to give a better idea of the coloring. Ignore the missing railing up top, and the lack of molding, and oh, the mess. Do you like our orange door??? Chat Icon

Now, put that together with the charcoal floor, what do you all think?

I like the iron, but it is something I think can become dated. I personally love the wood banisters w/ the white ballisters (I don't think they will get as dirty as you think) or all one color wood with the carved one you posted.

The gray wall is throwing me off. I'm thinking you are contemporary....

I'm more traditional in our colonial. We left our treads exposed and just put a runner up the middle(your treads are gorgeous, I would not cover them up). I think white balists and a wood banister are classic and timeless...

The treads were covered by carpet, so they have staple holes in them, and 2 are cracked right up the middle. We have to reface them, but they will still be wood with the white backing. I agree, we are more contemporary in our style.

Definetly do the white with the wood top... My brother has it in his home with three BANSHEE children and two BANSHEE dogs - they have no problems with fingerprints. I capitalized BANSHEE to emphasize that they are indeed banshees.

My niece (3) is adorable and a pigpen - literally plays in dirt. My nephew (7) is adorable and a wild man.
