Definetly do the white with the wood top... My brother has it in his home with three BANSHEE children and two BANSHEE dogs - they have no problems with fingerprints. I capitalized BANSHEE to emphasize that they are indeed banshees.

My niece (3) is adorable and a pigpen - literally plays in dirt. My nephew (7) is adorable and a wild man.

I think the wood with the white ballisters would look great in your house with the flooring you are putting in. I don't think you need to worry that much about the white. It would probably be a semi-gloss paint and that wipes clean easily. Your stairs will be gorgeous. Are you going with the darker stain for the wood. It's a very classy look with the white and the darker stained wood.

I said the wood with the iron - that's what we have and we love it. We are always getting compliments on it. Wrought iron has been around for centuries and is never dated (think of all the castles and mansions). Combining it with the wood, and the style of the spindles you choose, would keep it contemporary. My DH wanted it because it is stronger than the wood, no maintenance and I like it because it's prettier. I've seen the white wood spindles in some homes that are scratched, peeling, etc and they just don't hold up as well.

The wood will be most like this color.

This is driving me nuts, I agree with all the comments everyone is making, which is what makes it difficult. I like all the suggestions. I guess too many option is what is killing me right now.Chat Icon

we are have exactly the same debate in my house, I like the iron, DH likes the wood. I'm looking forward to seeing the poll results on this one!

So funny b/c DH and I are the opposite, I like wood he likes the iron.

If you do wood, would you consider two-tone (white balusters with wood banister)? This is my favorite:

IMAGE

See, that is what DH REALLY wants, the white ballisters, but I nixed it because of little kid hands on them all the time. I don't want to have to re-paint or wash them when my kid(s) grab onto them to go down the stairs.

This is what we have, I like it.

I will say that I think with the iron you might be held to a certain period whereas I think the wood ones are timeless.

I think w/ the choice of tile, the iron would look better.

After seeing your new pics with the area painted, i'd definitely go with the white balusters and wood banister. Very classic, it'll look gorgeous!

Like the others said, I don't think they are going to get too dirty even with kids... just like anything else, wipe them down once in a while.

I totally agree with Jess. Plus with your new pic of the slate floor the white balusters would keep the area looking not so heavy. KWIM? The area might look very dark and heavy looking if you went with the dark stain banister and the wrought iron. But the white would brighten up the area. GL with your decision. Chat Icon

Why don't you try in paint to make iron ballisters and then white wood ones....

I still vote the white wood ones. Even though I LOVE the iron ones. I'm zero help.
