I always laugh at these towns where they say- oh we NEVER lock our doors here.

That was my first thought when I read the question, this isnt Mayberry 
We lock the door. When we finish renovations we are getting an alarm.

I lock my doors every time DH and I are not home, or if we are home it is usually unlocked until about 8pm, then we lock them whether we are home or not.

Only when we go to bed or if we'll be gone for the whole day. If I run to 7-11 I'll leave it open.
I also leave my car running when I run into stores.

ALWAYS! But I do have a friend who's family never locks their doors. They live in a nice area in Suffolk but they're right by a bar! More than once they've had drunk people stumble into their house in the middle of the night. But they keep leaving their doors unlocked!

I have family upstate that never locks their doors, they even leave their keys in their cars unlocked. I think this is nuts! I live in a very safe neighborhood w/my driveway gated and I still always lock my doors, I'm paranoid!

All of my doors are always locked, unless I'm walking through them of course.
ETA: We have multiple locks on every day, all of them are always locked.

So i have family that lives in Stanhope, NJ...DW and I were visiting for the weekend. We all went out and when we came back to the house they all just walk right in... no keys nothing... i was like  
my front door is locked 100% of the time unless im walking through it.... what about you?
someone in my family does this too and they are on long island.

I never used to lock it growing up. I remember our front door was ALWAYS unlocked.
But now.. my husband is a FREAK about locking doors. The door is locked, deadbolt is on and alarm is armed.. even when we are home!
He recently saw a story on Oprah where a guy walked into someone's home and kidnapped a little girl while her mother was in the other room and brings it up as proof that his way is the 'right' way.

When the front door is open during the say, I lock the storm door.
We set the alarm when we go to bed or are in for the day or when we leave.

I said other because I have to be honest in saying this (we live in an apt building)- if I'm just running down to throw in a load of laundry or to run to 7-11 or another store that is on the same block I don't lock my apartment door (the front door to the building is ALWAYS locked and you need a key).
If it's that we're going out and won't be back for a good hour, then yes we lock both locks!

Yes, I always lock. My DH always double locks (and locks me out).
I know people that don't ( during the day, when home, ) and I never knock when I go there. I jsut open the door & say " I am breaking into your house b/c you never lock your doors."

after reading "In Cold Blood" I find all Mayberry's scarier than my big city.
ETA: even if I didn't lock my doors (which I certainly do) there is no way I'd say I didn't on the internet.
