Re: Do you (or someone you know) have a food allergy?

Two of my nieces have allergies to peanuts. One is severe (can't be in the same room) the other is not (just can't touch or eat it). The one who is severe is allergic to a LOT of stuff. So many things I can't even remember or list.

I tell people I am allergic to peas since I hate them, but I really am not. Chat Icon

Re: Do you (or someone you know) have a food allergy?

Yes, I do. Mine is a weird allergy. Certain raw nuts and fruits and vegetables set me off big time. Oddly enough, when the fruits/veggies are cooked, I am usually okay. I believe I am more allergic to the pollen in the actual item than the fruit/veggie itself.

My allergies include:
Apples
Pears
Cherries (severe)
Strawberries (mild)
Carrots
Celery
Pistachios (Severe)
Peanuts (mild)
Hazelnuts (Severe)

I am sure there are others but I avoid anything in the family of the above items like the plague so I am not sure. It makes it sooo hard to eat healthy when I have to deal with this! lol.

Re: Do you (or someone you know) have a food allergy?

My son is allergic to eggs, diary and tree nuts. We avoid them all and carry and epi pen and benadryl everywhere.

My nephew is allergic to all of the above as well except his are life threatening. When he was 2 he was fed a tiny bit of lamb and went into anphylactic shot. Luckily they had an epi pen and gave it to him or he would have not survived the trip to the hospital

My husband and his sister have the allergies mentioned above-sensitivities to fruit skin and certain nuts.

I have a shellfish allergy but I did not develop it until I was 28. All was well and I ate it ( and loved it by the way) up until that point and then it came on out of nowhere.

Re: Do you (or someone you know) have a food allergy?

I know a friend's ex finance was allergic to milk and diary. so we ate very carefully. She couldn't touch milk or dairy products. She had a list of other allergies too. I know she says they are real and she had an epi pen. I don't doubt her but to be 20 something and be allergic to milk like peanuts was odd to me (sorry if others have it). She was allergic to peanuts, but not almonds, other stuff too. i forget.

Otherwise.. no..
No one in my family or friends are allergic to any food item. Guess us poor folks were bred out of it! Chat Icon Sorry old joke. We used to say only the rich kids got food allergies cause they could afford to be picky or have meds. Us poor folks ate what we could and were happy for it. God that was eons ago. But I didn't see food allergies until I got to college and more so when I moved to NY.

ETA: oh I forgot.. my BIL grew into an allergy to shellfish. He LOVES shrimp. Got it later in life. He still eats shrimp much only a single one here and there. Then he will turn pink and itchy.

my niece is highly allergic to tree nuts. she carries an epi pen with her at all times & knows how to use it if she needs to, she's only 6.

my sister (not the mother of the tree nut allergy child) has celiac disease - gluten allergy/intolerance.

Re: Do you (or someone you know) have a food allergy?

Not to be annoying but I did answer "other".

I don't have anny major/life threatening allergies. I have sensitivity to food from the birch family (apples, almonds, etc.)

No one I know that is close to me has food allergies. However I know people that have allergies. I'm a teacher so I have a known a couple of kids with peanut allergies. I didn't click "yes" because I wasn't sure what you meant by know (as in know very well/close with, or just know who they are)

Hope that made sense!

DH is allergic to canteloupe and honeydew.
SIL is (recently at age 26) allergic to shrimp, certain berries, and certain tree nuts.
DD had a slight reaction to peaches as an infant And I never tried to give them to her since. (she is now 2)

I used to be allergic to a lot of things...ketchup, oranges, ginger...but I liked them, ate them anyway, and I'm not allergic anymore.

I know a couple of people who are severely allergic to shellfish.

Re: Do you (or someone you know) have a food allergy?

I am gluten intolerant (so is my sister, we assume it is genetic).

I am also allergic to egg whites.

MIL is allergic to shellfish.

My mom is allergic to lactose (which she only found out about less than 2 years ago but has apparently been allergic since she was a kid, but no one actually told her!).

I am allergic to mushrooms and cinnamon.

DS is severely allergic to dairy, moderately so to peanuts and egg whites. I have to carry an epi-pen and benedryl for him at all times.

DH is lactose intolerant. He also has GI issues and has to avoid a bunch of stuff to prevent flareups, off the top of my head he can't have anything containing caffeine, onions, peppers, or fried foods. I know there are more but I can't remember them all.

Re: Do you (or someone you know) have a food allergy?

My sister died 17-years ago from her food allergy. She had asthma and was severly allergic to MSG. She went to a Chinese Food place and ordered her food without MSG. Well, the eggroll they gave her was pre-made and had MSG. The Epi-Pen did not save her.

Food allergies can be very serious. So far my kids don't seem to have any. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
