on a similar note:

you know walgreens is acting like a malwart, and is trying to crush CVS, right?

I refuse to shop at walgreens... they purposely put a shop right next to every CVS and are actively try to bankrupt them so they become NY's mega pharmacy Chat Icon

I've seen it the other way around in FL and MN. CVS moves in right next to Walgreens. That's competition for ya!

No and it has nothing to do with the documentary. I hated that store before the documentary and I hate it still. I wouldn't shop there if my life depended on it.

If we had a Wal-Mart by us I might. I won't refuse to step foot in one.

Re: Do you shop Wal Mart??

Yup. The ones by us are pretty decent.

I hate to pull the geeky economist card, but if there wasn't demand for these jobs at Walmart, the hourly rates/benefits would increase. Clearly, someone is willing to work in these conditions.

No. The only time I ever stepped foot into one (the Westbury one), it was filthy. The merchandise was all over the floor, they were not well stocked and the workers in the store left a lot to be desired. Chat Icon

True. Meanwhile, the employees are so miserable that the place is a disaster and you get grumpy service.
eta- which is what's keeping most of the poeple away from the store...
Seems they could make up the $$ they are cutting in costs by paying and treating people better, charging more for their products, and getting more customers through their door.

Re: Do you shop Wal Mart??

Never. I hate even entering that store for many reasons. I don't care what the prices are.

I find target so much more appealing (and I barely go there either).

Since I live near a superWalmart in Florida now that also has a grocery store - yes, I'm in there every so often.

Re: Do you shop Wal Mart??

Sometimes, there are may companies that treat their workers like crap, but we still use them.

Do we look into the practices of all stores we shop in, buy from, use?

It must be a NY thing. The stores in NC are far from disgusting and the employees in general are very pleasant/happy/normal.

just a guess, but that's likely becuase they're paying midwest wages to NY employees, who have to deal with a NY cost of living.... which is probably 30+% higher than elsewhere.... that would instill a good deal of grumpiness....

totally agree. And it's funny, because when I was getting my MBA (early 2000) we studied Walmart because they were deemed to be doing so many things right.

I don't really shop there - only because there isn't one close, whereas there is a Target about 1 mile away.
