Re: Do you think our country is safer 7 years later?
We are more aware but I think that comes and goes. We were very aware right after 9/11 but as people posted security is lacking in many ways these days.
I am still fearful of something else happening

it's very hard to fight an enemy who welcomes death and calls it martyrdom.
this same enemy doesn't wear a uniform and are spread out all over the world. they can be anyone.
no, I do not feel safe.

Posted by usuk2004 I think this view that the world around us is filled with hate is what's doing the most damage. The US is alienating itself further and further, becoming defensive and elitest. What about the hate that's being bred in the US for other countries???
You have GOT to be kidding me, especially today with this BS.
I do think usuk2004 has a point. We are alienating ourselves. Diplomacy seems to have completely disappeared under the current administration. I do hope that whomever is elected in Nov. takes a look at the way the world views our government and practices. seriously? this is really what you think?? how many UN resolutions did Sadam violate? how many talks and warnings did we have with Iraq over how many years before 2003?
how many times did the US ask the Taliban to turn OBL over to the US before we launched an attack?
how many times have we, the UN and most of the western world tried to negotiate with N Korea and Iran?

I don't think that we are safer - and i DO believe tat diplomacy can creat a safer country - look at Switzerland and Sweden - you don't see anyone bombing them.

i just want her to explain the devastation we caused over there that provoked the attack.
Did the US military really never give you a history lesson on the region? That's sad and something that should be put in place.
I don't know what Ruby had in mind, but the US has not really been a friend of the Arab people since WWII
We put in our puppet (read: Shah of Iran) who squandered money from the people and tortured, murdered and wiped out any democratic opposition - his secret police trained by the US.
We supported ISraeli's attack on Lebanon and Palestine in the 1980's
We attacked Libya's military planes and bombed Libya - a direct cause of the Pan Am 103 bombing
Supporting a repressive Saudi regime
The whole Iraq mess - by funding them in the 80's against, who we thought were the bigger enemy, Iran, which led to the Gulf War, which led to the creation of al Qaida

I feel compelled to give some actual facts here, not your re-write of history.
re: Iran - after WWII was divided between the Soviets and the British very similar to the way W. Germany was divided. this was due to the FACT that Iran was aligned with Nazi Germany!!!!!!!! after the war, we supported the Shah, b/c the Soviets were supporting their own Iranian puppets within Iran.
re: Israel - so I guess you didn't hear about the repeated Arab invasions of Israel since 1948, along with the support of Palestinian terrorists through the late 60's and early 70's (Munich Olympics ring any bells????! Entebbe, Uganda ring any bells?????). I guess Hezbollah and Syria were innocent peace brokers in the 80's
re: Libya - the repeated bombings sponsored by Kadafi of US military hangouts in W. Germany and against German citizens in the early 80's mean nothing in your version of history?
re: Saudi Arabia - we never supported a Saudi regime. we do business w/the Saudi Gov't because they have oil. every nation in the world does business with SA for oil.
re: Iraq - we provided limited intelligence support to Iraq during their war with Iran. we never sold Iraq any weapons of any kind whatsoever. the Iraqi army that was destroyed in 91 had Russian tanks, Chinese tanks, Russian planes, French helicopters, Russian artillery and Chinese and E European small arms. one the biggest lies out there is that the US armed Iraq!
The Gulf War was started by Saddam's invasion of Kuwait. a world-wide coalition was invited to join forces and liberate Kuwait. NOT just the US. This is the excuse OBL uses to hate America.
OBL did not complain when we helped him defeat the Soviets in Afghanistan.

Re: Do you think our country is safer 7 years later?
I feel that airplane travel is safer now than it was pre-Sept 11th - although it still scares me. Airplanes now have reinforced steel doors, there are guns in cockpits, air marshalls on (not enough) flights... But, I do not feel safer nor do I think our country is safer as a whole.

Re: Do you think our country is safer 7 years later?
I feel safer. I think in our history we go through periods of different countries hating us. While it may appear right now that we are hated by most countries give it a few years and different countries will not like us. But when it comes down to it, they all look at us when they need help or a hand out.

The bottom line is the US has not been a welcome presence in that part of the world since jump street.
Too much difference between east and west philosophies, and who the he11 are we to tell them how to live, worship etc. sorry but - since when do we tell anyone how to live and who to worship?

wow - and where did you learn all this?
well if you must know, I do have a degree in history and I am working on a PhD in History at Stony Brook, so between lectures, readings, seminars, research, and many years of teaching I can say that I am well educated in history.
I won't go tit for tat with your arguments, since I am going to bed. I am well aware of the alliances that have occurred throughout history and with dealing with the Middle East. My omission of events was not for deception, but to keep the post short. The point wasn't to discuss the conflict, but what events contributed to a negative US image in the Middle East. Of course the US acted/reacted in it's best interest and perhaps those actions/reactions were justified, but they happened and there were reactions to those US actions. It's arguing the chicken and the egg and we can go back to the Crusades...or why not to Abraham and Ishmael.
I had no intension to be snarky, but it seems (from your tone) that you took it to be that way. I actually think/thought that the US military would give a short history of the region before they send people who are risking their lives over it.

Of course I'm playing devil's advocate here I hope you all know that. So tell me how imposing our way of life on other countries with different philosophies who do not necessarily believe our way is the right way is helping our standing in the world. I beleive democracy is the way to go but maybe, just maybe it's not for everyone.
Because we are the best!!

I am not being confrontational, but when I refuted your post, I stated documented historical facts.
and what makes you assume that the US military doesn't give briefings? what gives you the right to be so condescending to someone who has fought in Iraq while you're teaching in your safe college classroom?

Sorry the only lesson i learned while in the military was how to kill terrorists. But thx for your botched version.
Face it many people in the world know that we are the most powerful nation on earth. Boasting a military might that exceeds any other country. And because of this people envy, resent, and dislike us as a whole. These sentiments lead to assumptions that we gained our strength through exploiting them and their way of life. You can also blame our media for it. The youth in other nations seek out our pop culture in movies magaizines books ect. and th older generation of some of these countries aren't to happy about their children being exposed to sex, violence and dirty language. But i dont think we had 9-11 coming to us like some of you do.
