I think a lot of people have a superiority complex. I know that people get nasty w/CS simply because they can. They feel powerful when they are hiding behind their little telephone. They think you are beneath them. It doesn't matter if you're the nicest person in the world, they will find a way to be nasty and berate you.
I see it all day long in my dept.
That's a shame because CS is frequently the gateway to getting an issue resolved....flies to honey comes to mind.
I know. They are just looking to demean people. They don't realize that everyone in our department must have a 4yr degree, and some even beyond that. And we are not in an industry where we're dealing w/clerical errors on bills or things like that. We are dealing with things that straddle a very fine legal line, FDA law, etc. This is their HEALTH and if I can't give you the info you want, it's because LEGALLY I cannot, or I will be fired.

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
Sometimes- but never without reason. Though sometimes I find I keep getting shuffled from person to person and dept. to dept. and it's hard to remember that it's not the fault of the last guy you see, but of the first guy. It just gets really frustrating.
But usually, I'm extra nice. I'm a receptionist and I get treated like sh!t all the time. I get cursed at, screamed at, talked down to, papers thrown in my face, I'm expected to clean up after attorneys when they spill their coffee or salad. I would never treat people the way these guys treat us.

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
The only one I am consistently nasty with is when Cablevision calls me to try and get my business. Last year I was going to switch, had everything all set up, on the day of installation the installer called 1 hour after the lastest time he was supposed to be there and said he was going to be late...hello...you are already late, so got him to narrow it down to an hour. 2 hours later I called him back (cell in the caller ID) and he said he is still at the other job and I should "chill and I'll be there when I get there."
Yeah. Not so much.
I cancelled the installation, called them and asked to be removed from their call list. That was a year ago. I would say I get on average 2 calls a month to my cell phone and 1 to my house phone asking for the chance again.
If you are nasty to me, then you get it back, but I start off nice.

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
no, generally i don't treat them badly - it's not their fault something is going wrong!
verizon cs reps - yea, i have to admit i do. but that's only because we haven't gotten a bill sent to our house in 6 months, we aren't signed up for paperless billing, and they keep overcharging us by at least $50 a month. everytime i call they say they've fixed it but every month it's the same old shitt! so yep, i've had it with them and i'm generally not nice when i call there

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
One time I remember I was on the phone with a rep regarding a health insurance problem. I was just at the end of my rope with this issue and I really lost my temper and yelled at the rep. It wasn't her fault, and I apologized about it.
Overall, I will tell a CS rep that I'm mad about the PROBLEM, but always point out that I understand it's not their fault. Being understanding and treating a CS rep like the fellow human being they are instead of some second-class citizen to stomp on, can really go a long way in getting better service anyway, so it's win-win.

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
No i don't. I only will ever get an attitude if they are rude for no reason (which does happen sometimes). But i never get angry or nasty...they are people doing a job.
It's very easy to forget that there is a human being with feelings involved when you're on the phone. A pet peeve of mine is hearing someone yell or berate someone who is a CSR.

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
I would never start with anyone and dont feel I am better then anyone BUT I will say that many places with customer service are BSing while taking care of the customer which gets on my last nerve not paying attention to the customer. So when we talk about people that are rude we also need to acknowledge that CS can be rude at times as well.

No. Even if someone is rude to me I am not rude back. You get a lot further being nice to people than being nasty to them.

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
Nope. As soon as I realize what I need is beyond their scope, I get a supervisor. And I'll be nice to them as well. I just keep going up the chain until my issue is resolved.

No, never.
I've worked in retail and waitressing. I know it can be exasperating.
Unless they are rude to me first- then it's a different story.

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
Never, I was a CSR at one time and people were horrendous to me. I was so nice and would always go out of my way to do everything I could to help them, sometimes spending a crazy amount of time (hours) and effort on one person. I had a guy say he was going to come down to see me in person to yell at me, lol. I also had many sleezeball men hitting on me over the phone and asking for my location!!!
Some of the people would call frequently so they would eventually be nice to me when they realized I was not a twit and had the capacity to help them. They started off mean though. They had a preconceived notion about what the call (and I ) would be like so they did not have respect. That is the problem IMO, lack of respect.
I try to give respect to every single person in front of me, regardless of who they are or what position they might hold. To me that does not define who they are.
I will/can be nasty to someone who is rude to me though.

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
No, i'm not superior to anyone else and don't expect to be bowed to either CSR people are there to do a job (be helpful) so when its done and done well, everyone is happy.
The only time i've ever shown frustration or anger is when i think a CSR i'm dealing with is genuinely stupid or blatantly not listening to me. I then just ask to speak to a supervisor to get the issue cleared up.
Not all customers are angels, and not all csr's are devils

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
No. Because I was that person for many years.
We had a legitimate reason to be upset with a company and I had to have DH call because I couldn't do it!

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
I am ALWAYS NICE to them. I had to edit this because I read this post wrong initially, I thought it was about phone reps..and as of this week I am NOT having a great experience.
However, in general the customer service people are always very nice to me and helpful. I am always nice to them as well.

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
No. (Not unless provoked) Actually I get alot of great sales/deals from CS because I try to be nice. HOWEVER I have been nasty to those who were nasty to me first.
I was at JC Penny th eother day and the guy was short tempered because they were closing and he misunderstood me and gave conflicting info. His co-worker walked by and wispered stupid. So I said yes you are.

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
I am normally nice BUT there have been times when I have flipped out on BAD CS people. Sometimes those CS people are just plain rude. Unless I am really frustrated I just ask to be speak to a manager or supervisor.

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
To the people that have been nasty due to errors, etc...are you automatically nasty because you're already pisssed off that you have to call, or do you get nasty when they are nasty first?

I start off nice and explaining the issue calmly and asking what I can do or "we" can do together to get this resolved.
Then if I'm given attitude or transferred to five different people or something like that I start getting irritated. If the issue can't be resolved and I'm given a blunt nasty comment I give one back and ask for a supervisor.

I am usually nice but I lose it with verizon. There is no reason i need to be on the phone for over an hour to find out what day the service person will come. Today they put me on hold for 35 minutes and i hung up.

Re: Do you treat customer service people badly?
Not unless they start with the nastiness and attitude. I've had some horrible CS reps. One time I was speaking to one and she had the nastiest attitude so I asked to be switched and she said "you have me or nothing. Deal with it." I wanted to reach through the phone and knock her out.

I always try to be extra nice... until people cop and attitude with me and then I'll be super snarky.
Same here! I always start off pleasant. When (if) Im nasty its for a reason not just because I want to be a jerk, yknow?
