I just rinse, even though I run the DW every two or three days. Depends upon how many glasses DH uses.
I read an article about how the dishes actually have to have food residue on them in order for the DW and the detergent to work properly.
eta :
I also turn it off right when the wash cycle ends and open the door to let the dishes air dry. They dry quickly because of the steam evaporation. Saves energy.
Ohhh! GOOD IDEA!

I have no time to wash dishes then put them in the dishwasher.... sometimes I scrap and dont rinse and they go right into the dishwasher....but only if Im going to stat it right away.

Thanks everyone. Yeah we run ours everyday, with the twin girls bottles it just a lot easier. I scrape and then rinse if necessary. But I just notice that the silverware and some plates just don't look as clean as they should for a brand new dishwasher (GE profile) Maybe I will start soaking the silverware before.

I generally just rinse any of the heavy grime off or if I know anything in particular has some really stuck-on grease or whatever.

Try this : dirty dishes
It may be that something is not working right or is clogged in the dishwasher.
Also, the enzymes in dishwasher detergent act on food residue, which is why dishes should not be washed before being placed in the DW.

I always rinse them so there's no food on them. It grosses me out to put them in there with food on them. I don't know why!

I usually have a glass with water for the silverware. I rinse only those dishes that have a suace on them. Otherwise, I don't waste the water.

I rinse them off. If I see some food still on there I will take a spounge to it before I load it in the DW.
