This is a challenging year for everyone. I understand that it would be difficult for you to pick up your child and return them to school after the appointment is done. I get how hard it is to be a working mom. I understand how difficult it is to get appointments for children outside of the school day. However, the school is not there for your convenience, to make your day to day life easier. The school is there to educate your child and keep ALL of the children safe and in a supportive learning environment. Parents pulling kids out and having them go virtual for vacations, haircuts (yes that has happened at my school) dentist appointments, karate belt tests, doctor's appointments, Christmas photos etc. etc. sends a clear message to the child and the teacher where that family's priorities stand.
I 100% agree with the school's policy.
What is the solution to doctor/dentist appointments during the school day? The school will hunt you down like a cat on a mouse for their medical forms, but it’s an inconvenience for the teacher to not have the kid in school?
You can get it so that your child is on a schedule where they have physicals over the summer. Most dentists have hours into the evening. I have never once had to pull any of my three kids for a dentist appt. Not even the orthodontist. I get it if it's a specialist but hopefully those situations are few and far between.

They now can log in but they will be marked absent at first they said they couldn’t at all but either way I find it unfair if a child is logging in they can’t receive credit for doing so.
This sounds ideal. You're absent but you at least have the option to log in so you don't fall behind on classwork. That's not unreasonable.
When my son was sick with Covid I emailed his teachers and told them that he would be logging on without video, as he was truly sick and in bed, just so that he could listen to the lectures so he wouldn't fall behind. It definitely helped when he had to return to school after being sick for a few days.

Same DD only sees the doctor for her physical- in August or early Sept before school starts All dentist visits for her check ups are on weekends or after school- 3 pm on. Same with the orthodontist.

Re: Does anyone else find this ridiculous... remote learning
My kids pediatrician holds appointments until 5 pm daily and on Saturdays. There is honestly zero reason to schedule a physical during the school day. Nearly every month there is a day off, or a half day for teacher in service, or from three to five p,m. where a physical or dentist appointment can be scheduled. Poor planning on your part is not an emergency for the school. My district posts the school calendar out four years in advance. It takes a moment to put the days into my phone calendar and then when I need to schedule things I can see by color which person or school it relates to. Unless your child has massive health issues dental appointments are twice a year and a physical is once a year. Schedule one dentist appointment during the summer. Now you only have two appointments for the school year. Even when I took my kids to specialists they were always able to accommodate after school appointments.

It's amazing how many kids do get pulled out of school though for appointments - my kids used to complain to me that I never pick them up early but X, Y and Z get picked up a lot lol.
DS 2 gets out at 3pm now (they moved it from 3:15) and we have a couple of 3pm appointments coming up - I will just pull him out a little early.
ETA - We typically just have annual doctor, semi-annual dentist but DS 1 now sees the orthodontist every 6w and DS 2 every 6 months - and those are annoying to schedule as they limit appts now due to covid.

I do all physicals on Saturdays. My biggest problem as of late is the dentist. My kids had an appointment last March during the start of pandemic which was canceled. Then the dentist retired. I got them in with my dentist, which had months long wait. Then they saw.my daughter but canceled my sons appt and rescheduled. Long story short they constantly call to reschedule and now they have appointments on a Thursday in May at like 10 am. That's all they had available so they are going to be absent that day. My kids rarely miss school

Does anyone else find this ridiculous... remote learning
This post inspired me to call for physicals for my kids, they are due in June - and they don't do physicals after 2pm anymore - WTF?

I don't know if it's been stated but depending on what system the school uses it can be a logistical nightmare if they're marking kids present but they are at home. God forbid something happens and the school's system is saying 602 are present in the building but in reality there are only 597 because a handful are remote, that's a nightmare. Then people are looking for the five kids that aren't there, kwim?
I know the system our school uses doesn't have an option for "absent but virtually present". Teachers were calling the main office constantly re: how to take attendance properly and that takes away from class time too. Plus - if you're putting the onus on teachers to make notes and comments in the attendance system, well, teachers are human and make mistakes too. So it's really just a logistical nightmare all around.
Oh wow that's annoying because it's so easy to solve. We have PR for Present Remote.

My DD’s pediatrician only does well visits on weekday mornings. This is her second pediatrician and neither did well visits on a weekend. I’ve managed to get weekend dentist appointments.
Our district doesn’t know what they’re doing tomorrow let alone 4 years from now. I just got an email that there will be early dismissal twice next week. It’s Wednesday. They’ve made our lives a living hell with their disorganization. I dare them to say anything if my DD misses an hour of kindergarten for a doctors appointment.

I agree with the school.
I don’t see why you couldn’t just behave like this was pre-Covid and either pull your kid out of school early/send them late or just miss a day. It happens and it’s no big deal.
I am doing this but the point is why when they are online anyway? If child doesn’t have to miss work then why not let them.
Because you signed up to have your kid in school to learn and not remote?
Schools and teachers are there for your kids to learn, not to be a convenient babysitter to suit your needs. If they make an exception for you then they would have to extend it to everyone else and we all know that not every kid is equipped to handle the remote learning., which causes an even bigger burden on the teachers.
This is just a stupid comment how is allowing my kid to be remote for the day being a babysitter. They cant stay home by themselves the teacher isn’t watching them.
I don’t use the school as a babysitting service. i actually do pay for child care when needed. I am so sick of hearing that people use school has child care yet teachers do the same thing and for some reason that’s ok for them to do!!!
This post has nothing to do with convenience or needing someone to watch my kid

That’s great for your doctors but as I said in previous post. I have a job and leaving to take my kids to the doctors is the last thing I want to do.
My son had to see a neurologist four times this past few months do you know how hard it is to get a neurologist appointment. They we’re all scheduled months in advance and with whatever time they have which of course is during the day.
Same with the eye dr they just had to go. Completely booked and he lost his glasses so I had to take whatever they had which of course was during the day and it was still a month out. If I try to get one for after school or on a weekend for any of these appointments I would’ve been waiting 6+ months
Not sure why everyone thinks it’s so easy to get dr appointments after school Hours and during the weekend. I would love too but it doesn’t happen.

We must all be missing why this is such a huge deal to you.
Unless your child is going for a perfect attendance award, it doesn't sound like you'd all that affected by this.
He can log in so he does not fall behind. He just can't be counted as physically present. It's a win-win because it discourages abuse of this option but doesn't punish the kids.

I didn’t say it was a HUGE deal I said I found it ridiculous and wanted to see if I was the only one. I’m not losing sleep Over it and wanted opinions on it.
As I also stated already clearly I am the minority on feeling it is ridiculous but at the same time I don’t think anyone has given me a good enough reason to change my position and that’s fine!

I have taken my son to the neuro soc and they are a pita for appointments. As for the eye doctor my daughter broke her glasses. We kept her old ones and use them. They saw us on Saturday with new frames and popped her old lenses into them. I am sorry your pediatrician is bad at appointments I would switch. I would just say the appointment does not work for you and ask if they have late cancelations or 8 am appointments. My doctors all have before and after school appointments. I am incredulous that none of yours do.

My pediatrician is fine with appointments.
It’s the specialists that our not accommodating.
This was his first pair of glasses so I had no old ones and he was also due for another check so I wasn’t going to just get them replaced. We see a pediatric eye doctor That I guess is popular and we really like so I’m stuck with whatever appointments I can get.
Even dentist appointments are so hard to get. I don’t now guess I just have no luck with the drs we use.

It's hard - I think it's because (well, DH thinks it's because) people are going back to Drs now, for months, nobody really went to see a Dr unless they were really sick but now, they are so backlogged. I tried to make myself an appt to see a specialist and I couldn't get in for 2 mos.

But even if it’s not easy for you—you just have take them out of school for the day/half day and deal with it. It’s part of being a parent. Having kids and everything that comes with them usually causes inconveniences. Lots of them!
I don’t see why making life more difficult for the teacher (in an already difficult year) is more of an acceptable solution.

Maybe you can get recs on here for new doctors?
The more niche specialists can be a PITA. When DS needed an annual pediatric dermo visit I learned I had to book a summer appointment in March. But the eye doctor, dentist etc. shouldn't be that far out. And even if they are, most of those visits won't be "emergencies" and you can plan them in advance.

Does anyone else find this ridiculous... remote learning
I am both a parent and a teacher and can see both sides. I do not think it is a big deal to request your child be remote for the day if they have a doctor or dentist appointment that could not be scheduled for an evening or weekend. It's a once in a blue moon deal and a valid reason, IMO. That being said, I do think any other reason, including vacations, the child overslept, or they wanted to eat breakfast with you (a real excuse by a parent) is NOT a good reason to switch to remote. If someone chooses to take their child to Disney in the middle of March, that is completely the parents choice but they should not expect their child to be marked present since they can sign onto google meets from the hotel room. This only encourages families to go on vacation outside of the MANY school vacations and long weekends. That is taking advantage of remote learning, when there are many children who have been remote this entire year, for very valid reasons. But again, OP I do agree that for an appointment it should be allowed!

Re: Does anyone else find this ridiculous... remote learning
Kids in our district have been doing all sorts of wonky things all year, staying home on in school days, going in on remote days, etc. I can see how it may be disruptive for teachers but honestly, parents and kids are being asked to make a LOT of sacrifices this year and I do not think it is unfair to expect a little flexibility from the school in return.
That being said, my kids have their well visits in May and my pediatrician does not do them late afternoons or weekends. It is not always possible to wait to schedule during summer bc you are required to show papers that you had the visit annually for certain organizations, sports and activities. This is not something I can stress about as there is already WAY too much to stress about.
So I will take off work and pick them up early from school and make sure they get missed work from a friend. Or not. It is one day. I couldn’t possibly care less if the school marks them absent.

My kids pediatrician holds appointments until 5 pm daily and on Saturdays. There is honestly zero reason to schedule a physical during the school day.
I know what being parent is!! This is not about me being inconvenienced I don’t know why people keep saying that. I don’t care in the long run if they miss school.
I’m ok with people not agreeing I want to make clear this has nothing to do with me being inconvenienced, me caring if they miss a day etc.
it’s the principal! You say they can log in do the work but you won’t give them credit for being there??!!! Why??!! How much sense does that make??
Again though I’m the minority that feels this way and I’m ok with that.

I think you need to be mad at the parents that caused the privilege to log in whenever to be taken away.

Re: Does anyone else find this ridiculous... remote learning
I’m sorry, but I agree with the school too. Too many parents have abused this privilege. Some children stay home because they woke up late or because it was “too cold” outside. If your child is supposed to be in school, then you shouldn’t expect to receive credit when logging on remotely (when he/she is supposed to physically be in school). Some students don’t log on for the entire day. Is it fair to mark a child present if they only log on for one period and then disappear for the rest of the day? I’m not saying your child does that, I’m just saying that some do.
