Does anyone have a Wood Burning Stove?
We installed one this past Fall to help bring our oil bill down. I do like it and it is warm and cozy, but when the fire is not going the sooty smell?
When the fire is going we have a cast iron pot filled with water, cinaminam, and oranges. Love the smell. But when the fire is out, all I smell is soot.
Any suggestions on how to get reis of the sooty smell? And Yes we remove the ashes every night or every other day,
Is there another concoction I whip up and put in the pot on the stove?

Re: Does anyone have a Wood Burning Stove?
We have a wood burning stove...came with the house when we bought it 3 years ago. It has been the BIGGEST money saver ever and it heats our whole house. We never get any smell and we just keep a cast iron kettle (with just water) on top. You might be burning very wet wood, or you might have a clog somewhere. You should definitely have it looked into b/c that doesn't seem right. You shouldn't be getting smells like that; especially when it's not even going. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!

Re: Does anyone have a Wood Burning Stove?
My parents have had a stove since I was 3 years old and I never smelled anything bad. I agree about the wood being wet. The past 33 years of tending to the stove have made my dad an expert at chopping wood and making sure it ages properly.
I love the cozy feeling too

Re: Does anyone have a Wood Burning Stove?
We have one - it came with the house. It doesn't have a smell. Maybe like the PP said - could it be the wood you are burning?
We actually don't clean it after each and every use bc I read you should keep some ash in there to achieve the slow burn needed to heat the whole house.
P.S. I Love it

Re: Does anyone have a Wood Burning Stove?
We have a wood burning stove, it's all we use for heat. It heats our whole house.
The only smells we get are if we get it going REALLY hot (like 700+) we will get a metallic smell. Obviously, you can get little puffbacks if you're not opening it the right way when it's going. But you shouldn't have an ongoing sooty smell.
Have you had it cleaned recently? If not, the creosote can build up and cause a smell. Also, if your chimney is too short you get more puffbacks.

If the wood isn't fully dried out yet this can happen. We have a regular fireplace and out house does smell of soot from time to time but consistently

Re: Does anyone have a Wood Burning Stove?
we love ours! make sure the parts are air tight, maybe you are leaking some of the smoke? we have to clean ours every other or 2 days...high maintenance but keeps the house warm and we don't use the oil as much! good luck!
