Does it bother you when people make up nicknames for your DC

I always hated when people called me Jenny as a kid. When I named my daughter I said I will call her by her full name bc I love it and if SHE wants a nickname, she can choose it.

Well today someone made up a ridiculous nickname and it annoyed me so I wanted some thoughts

What kind of nicknames are we talking about?

My daughter's classmates call her nicknames. Her full name is Jill, but they call her SillyJilly and JillyBean. Doesn't bother her or me. I find it quite cute. If they were being malicious, then that would be a different story.

My DD has started calling my DS Seanny (his full name is Sean). Even her classmates call him Seanny. Chat Icon I think it's sweet.

Depends on the nickname......it makes my cringe inside a little when people call Eddie "Eddie Spaghetti" other than that....nope.

My uncle calls CJ "turkey" and I think its so cute. I love nicknames though, so no, it never bothers me.

Doesn't bother me, I can't control other people and I wouldn't waste my breath trying to correct them, thats mean and condescending. I think its nice that people make up nicknames, its a sign of affection and I like it.

Re: Does it bother you when people make up nicknames for your DC

I'm with you, OP, I don't like it when my DS name is cut short. I do correct people & I don't think it's mean & condescending at all. I have a friend who doesn't really care for kids & she called DS Puppet whenever she saw him. I put an end to that. Nicknames can follow a child throughout their entire lives & if you don't like it, you have every right to correct people.

Chat Icon but what if I want to call her Angeloni? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon jkjkjk Chat Icon

In person, I always prefer my full name. If we have a girl and name her AnnaMaria - I want her full name to be used, not just Anna. But, people are already using Anna so I know it will be a battle!

Re: Does it bother you when people make up nicknames for your DC

we purposely chose a name for DS that doesn't have a common nickname. (like Robert or James or anything like that)

i don't mind the cute nicknames at all... he's goat, monkey, stinkyboy, etc, all the time! my sister calls him fish or chicken nugget. Chat Icon

Re: Does it bother you when people make up nicknames for your DC

MOST nicknames dont bother me at all..I think most of them are adorable and happy that people like DD enough to give her a nickname. BUT.....DD's name is Maeve and my father has never ever once called her that. Since the minute she was born, he has called her Maggie or Mag. Chat Icon Not really sure why or where he got it from....She is 11 months old, I think it's time he called her the correct name.

Not really unless its negative. My landlords call DS Tomaki. It loosely means "Little Thomas" in Greek b/c DH's name is Thomas and DS looked very similar to him when he was born. I think its cute and I do it all the time now too. lol.

The only one that bothers me slightly is MIL calling him Fatty. I know she is doing it jokingly but I dont want him to have poor body image.

DS has so many nicknames. Doesn't bother me one bit....His given name is Brendan Aidan. But we call him by his middle name. One of my close friends calls him Braidan. He has many cute nicknames. I know nicknames aren't for everyone. I know people who are named James and it has been like that since day one. They don't answer to anything else. Correct people when they say the wrong name...

Re: Does it bother you when people make up nicknames for your DC

Depends on the nickname -

I loathe Sean - y. But the entire daycare center calls Sean, Sean-y. It doesn't bother me - it's a variation of his name

My SIL referring to my son as Munchkin, or worse, MONKEY - irritates the hell out of me. He's a PERSON, with a name, his name is Sean. Don't call him a freakin' animal - Especially b/c she NEVER refers to him by his name. MIL does this as well, never calls him Sean, always something stupid like Munchkin or Muffin ...........Chat Icon

DS's name is Ian...so I don't see what nickname he can get except maybe people in high school eventually calling him "E". but like another poster said...as long as its not a rude nickname and Ian likes it...I'm fine with it. My name is Diana, but people call me Di or Dee all the time. I actually like it.

It bothers me a bit but a lot of people ask firt. DD name is Emerson, my DH does not like the nickname Emme and neither one of us calls her that. SOme of my family and friends do...I dont mind b/c I like the nickname. What does bother me is when my Grandmother (DD greatgrandmother) said...

"WHy did you choose the name Emerson? Hmmm, we will just call her Emme instead."

She clearly hates DD name and it pi$$es me off...good thing she is old or I would give her a piece of my mindChat Icon

My DS has several nicknames given to him by serveral different members of our family. Most don't bother me.

I think for me, it has more to do with who is saying the nickname, more than the nickname itself. I cringe when I hear it, but I try to let it go.....

I also hated Jenn and Jenny when I was growing up and I actually still do. Most of the time, if you call me one of them I won't even acknowledge you because it "isn't my name."

I feel the same.

My grandfather used to call his grandchildren "My Little Cockroaches!" Not the most flattering nickname but it came from affection and even though it made my mom and her sisters crazy - they never bothered to tell him to stop it.

Having said that - there is a respect issue sometimes. My older son prefers that people call him Robert. He is okay with Robbie from some people and I can call him Berto - but outside of that he really doesn't care for nicknames. One of Rob's friends took to calling him "Big Bert" and Robbie asked him politely and on several occasions not to use that name but the guy kept at it. THAT bothered me because it bothered my kid. I finally had to have Rob ask him to stop.

Re: Does it bother you when people make up nicknames for your DC

It depends on the nickname. My grandmother calls DS "Lucala" and DD "Isadorable" which I think is cute.

My sister called DS "Mr. Magoo" when he was little and I hated it - I don't even know what it means. Chat Icon She said she calls him that because he is so serious. If she tries to call DD that I will kick her.

It would depend on the nickname.

There is not shortened version of Claire but DH and I always call her Claire Bear, and some of our friends/family do tooChat Icon

There is not really a nickname for Owen either, I call him "O" or "O-Dog", but everyone else calls him Owen.

I don't have a problem with affectionate nicknames-MIL calls DS buckaroo.

Well you and I can call her AngeloniChat Icon

someone called her Angelpie today
I didn't say anything, but it definitely bothered me
Most nicknames don't bother me, like we call her meatball, munchkin, pumpkin or whatever, but it bothers me when people make up a nickname out of her name.
Plus the person who did this also refuses to call me by my name and I just think that is rude

I think it depends on who and their reasoning behind it. DS is Thomas Joseph (TJ).

My mom calls him all different pet names but, that's just her.

My MIL calls him by his whole name because her friends loathe initial names and this seems to bother me more (the rationale behind it).

I have so many nicknames for DS it isn't funny. To the point that I don't think he knows his name Chat Icon

Agoo
Cookie
Bunny
Bear

It's ridiculous. DH calls him Boogie most of the time.

But, oddly, his name is Christopher and I CANNOT STAND when people call him Chris Chat Icon Chat Icon
