Absolutely not. This year I had to be off for two & 1/2 weeks for funerals, etc. & my bosses completely understood....AND...I just started the job this year in May.
They've been a blessing.

Are you kidding me?
You called on Thanksgiving and that wasn't good enough?
Like you could have predicted when the poor guy was going to pass away.

Ask her for her home number. Tell her from now on, you will call her at home.
How in the world were you supposed to tell her sooner?
Were you supposed to work on Friday or were you closed?

We were closed on friday, they didn't open till friday... I did ask her for her cellphone# and she wouldn't give it to me, because i knew if G.F.B. something happened i could've called her... 'BUT' i did call my other boss on her cell and she told me to take off and she was sorry for my loss...I told her i asked her for her cell and she wouldn't give it to me so i called the other boss, and she was like i'm you're boss not her ... I know, Please dont remind me!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Does your boss give you a hard time about taking off for funerals

I am sorry you dont have an understanding boss.

My boss is very good. When my stepdad passed away almost a year ago I took two days off to stay with my mom & help her sort things out since there was no funeral.

No, and if he did I'd flip.

DH's uncle died and I sent an e-mail to my team saying I would not be available and in SC for the funeral. They all pretty much sent a nice e-mail saying to not worry about work. I had no vacation time left at all but nobody said a word.

That's terrible!! How on earth could you have given her more notice??? It's not like you knew when your DH's grandfather was going to die. What a crapy thing to say... I'm sorry you have to deal with a boss like that.

Nope, its not a problem for us to have off for things like that anytime. Most companies in the UK pride themselves on being family friendly.

Re: Does your boss give you a hard time about taking off for funerals

I'm sorry for your loss. I would ask your boss if people plan on passing away and if it were his/her family would it be okay! Family always comes first and poor planning on his/her part to cover a job is not your problem. I'm thankful to be covered by a collective bargining agreement so I don't have to tolorate that but your boss sounds like a heartless _________.Chat Icon

Re: Does your boss give you a hard time about taking off for funerals

My boss is very understandable. He never questions anything, even if I call an hour before I am suppose to be in.

Your boss is being ridiculous! You gave him notice & not to mention this was something sudden!

Re: Does your boss give you a hard time about taking off for funerals

That is COMPLETELY inappropriate for your boss. If I were you, I would have said, "No problem. I'll inform family members in the future to please die at a time most convenient for you" and then I'd report her to HR.

Re: Does your boss give you a hard time about taking off for funerals

I never have a hard time when it comes to wakes and funerals. If your boss happens to mention something else about it, I would put her in her place that she's being completely inappropriate and then I'd report her to HR.

Chat Icon GET THIS... OK... Today she tells me when i got my check that i was 'NOT' going to get paid for the Holiday' thanksgiving' because i did not come in On 'MONDAY' the day of the Funeral.... But she said because they already put the Payroll in 'I' got it, YOU know what if i didn't get paid for it I would have made a big ruckus about it and called the Union... I guess that what Union's are for to give'US' what we want. Is it me? Am I wrong for wanting to be paid for 'BOTH' days!Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm glad i did get paid because i think deep down she 'KNEW' she was wrong!!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Does your boss give you a hard time about taking off for funerals

How does she expect you to give more notice? When someone dies the funeral is just a few days later. There isno way you could predict thatChat Icon

You definitley need to contact H.R.
I am so sorry, but, your boss is an azz!Chat Icon

I don't understand, how in the world you were supposed to give more notice.
I'd be down at H.R. Monday AM telling them everything...Including she told you, You shouldn't have been paid!
If you have the time, You get paid! Period. The End!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
