dream feeding...3AM UPDATE
can someone tell me how to get this done properly??
ill explain my circumstance quickly.. my dd nurses all day..but before bed at nite, we do one bottle of formula, mostly because it seemed that i was not making that much milk in the evening, but then it just became convenient.. she gets her 7 o of formula between 8-9..after a bath..then she gets a book and falls right to sleep alone in her crib..perfect.. ok shes 3 months old, and still waking up at nite for that 3am bottle..could i try beating her to the punch and maybe dream feed her around 11 before we go to bed hoping it will hold her over alil longer?? If i do this i have a few questions... 1) how many more oz do i give?? 2) am i to do this while shes laying flat in her crib? wont she choke? 3)she usually needs to burp after 2-3 oz, how will this happen now??
tia for any and all suggestions!!
UODATE: here i am... at 3am...feeding my dd AGAIN ....I did the dream feed at 11:30...she took 5 oz... and now??? why am i up again i seriously feel like crying...my colicky ds slept better then this ae 6 weeks!!!! wth is wrong???
ugh vent over/ im so upset AND EXHAUSTED

Re: dream feeding...
i did the dream feeding around 5 months at 11pm...as i felt that ds did not need to be burped, i actually picked him up and fed him in my arms and then put him back down, i fed him 6-7 oz i think and he drank the whole thing, it did help avoid the 2--3am wake up

Re: dream feeding...
I tried that. It didn't make a difference. I elieve some babies just aren't ready to give up that feeding.
Sydnie FINALLY gave it up last week at 7 months old. She was ready though. I thought there was going to be screaming involved but there really wasn't.
I realized it was time when she wasn't even finishing the bottle. I knew then it was completely habit.

Re: dream feeding...
1) how many more oz do i give??
I think I gave around 4 oz but that was about as much as DS took.
2) am i to do this while shes laying flat in her crib? wont she choke?
No, I took DS out of his crib and fed him holding him as usual. He didn't even open his eyes. He drank on reflex and then would push the nipple out when he was done or I would see the formula dribbling from his mouth so I knew he was done.
3)she usually needs to burp after 2-3 oz, how will this happen now??
They do not need to be burped when they are dreamfeeding. Apparently the way the are drinking they do not take in much air.
I would just hold DS upright for about 5 minutes after I was done and then put him right back down.
He never woke up through any of this and I truly believed it helped him STTN.
His middle of the night feedings went from waking at 3AM to 5 AM pretty quickly.
Good luck!

Re: dream feeding...
With DD#1, the dream feed I did at 10/11 didn't do a lick of good- she still woke up in the middle of the night- just an hour or so later.
With #2- I dream feed at 10pm and it holds her over until 7am. *although I can guarantee now that I have publicly acknowledged it- she'll now be getting up at 3am*

Exactly what I did also! They dont really wake up.....just take the bottle on reflex and go right back to sleep.

Re: dream feeding...
after she is done drinking, just hold her upright on your shoulder for 5 minutes or so. If she needs to burp, she probably will. That also allows her to digest a little easier than going right back to bed.

Re: dream feeding...
I'll tell ya, I've NEVER had an issue burping either one of my daughters after a dream feed. They are/were so drowsy afterwards! With Eliza, I'll nurse her, then put her on my shoulder and stand up and kind of bounce her up and down while holding her head close to my shoulder to keep her from jostling too much. It's kind of like the *jiggle* that we do with them when they're newborns (while shhhing in the ear?). Without fail, I always get a burp that way- and she never wakes up. IF she does, she always goes right back to sleep.
I always dream feed in the room, no lights, no talking.

Re: dream feeding...3AM UPDATE
Sadly- it just may be *her thing*. Eliza was eating every 2-3 hours until she was 4 months old. Suddenly she just started to sleep through the night. Also- 3 months is usually a time for growth spurts- so it just may be dumb luck that she's starting one.
She'll get there eventually.

Re: dream feeding...3AM UPDATE
I've been through this and the info below is what helped me. Yes it was a pain, but in the end a full night of sleep was well worth it.
I watched a DVD on baby sleep habits from the Jericho library and they mentioned the habitual night feeding and how to ween the baby from doing this. The video was really about CIO, but there was a segment in it about middle of the night feedings.
It involved setting your alarm to wake up an hour before the earliest time DC typically will cry and feeding DC, but an ounce less than what he normally takes or if you are BFing a minute less than normal. Keep doing this, each night giving one ounce less (1 minute less) until they are down to one ounce (1 minute)
It allows him to adjust by taking more during the day. If you want the name of the video I can find out (FM me) , but I don’t remember off the top of my head…

Re: dream feeding...3AM UPDATE
I think at 3 months my baby was still sleeping 5 to 6 hour stretches. We would give a bottle at 11:00- 11:30 and he would sleep till about 4:30 -5:00. Those stretches eventually became longer and longer.
You'll get there soon!

Re: dream feeding...3AM UPDATE
I decided to try this after reading your post last night! DH gave DS a bottle at 11:30p (only took 3 oz) and then he was up at 3:30a (instead of 2am) but he only took 1.5 oz and took 3 oz at 4:30am.
We're trying again tonight and hoping he takes at least 4 oz.
Good luck tonight! Please update again!
