Just curious, has anyone made the trip with one driver plus children? I generally fly but i'm thinking of driving over Christmas break since I have the time. Jw how crazy this idea is lol.

Lol..I think at that point I would just fly. We aren't going to Orlando so I would still have a 2 hr drive after too.

Re: Driving to Florida

We did it over the summer..wasnt too horrible and we stopped as much as i wanted or the kids wanted. I didnt rush down. We did leave by 3:30 am and arrived in Florida the next day. We stayed in Georgia. We could have gone straght through but I didnt want to get there at midnight with two little ones. It would have been hard to get them back to bed.

Driving to Florida

I've done it a few times. I don't think it's so bad but my husband does. We usually stop overnight somewhere and explore on the way. It breaks it up a bit when we do that. My son handles it pretty well, too.

We do it every year. It's insanely expensive to fly. It's not bad at all, stop overnight and rest. Make sure you have plenty of electronics and car chargers and you'll be fine!

I have driven down twice but with two other adults that drove though my DH drove most of the way we still switched on off between me and my mom still drove some parts. we don't stop overnight and last time DD had the stomach virus Chat Icon so we stopped very often it took us about a full 24 hours usually it takes us I think 18 hours or so I think.

I don't know if I would do it if I was the only one driving. if I was I would probably plan to stop at least one time overnight and maybe plan to do another stop just in case I am tired.

Re: Driving to Florida

I've done it a couple of times with just me and my two kids. I would stop every couple of hours for gas or food. Sometimes we would all get out of the car and sometimes it would just be a quick stop. My kids are really good in the car though. They pretty much watched the DVD player the entire time.

I wouldn't do it with just 1 driver. The driver would go insane.

We did 2 drivers, on the way back drove right thru the night. It was horrible. Almost killed myself by getting a DVT. Fun.

Re: Driving to Florida

my parents just did this, but with no kids. my mom does not drive my dad's new car. they stayed in florence, north carolina on the way down. 95 had a lot of construction so they took a western route on the way home. my dad likes to drive.

I think you should just fly. If really interested, I have family that drives on regular basis that lives in syracuse. You can meet them somewhere & follow each other.

I wanted to blow my brains out with 2 adults and no children.

I can't imagine making the trek now by myself with my DD. That's just....wow. I shudder thinking about it.

Granted my kid whines after 15 min in the car...but still....

Re: Driving to Florida

I would rather not go than drive to Florida.

If I had a lot of time, I may make a big road trip out of it and stop for multiple nights on my way down (DC, NC, GA) and change it up coming back up. I would still prefer to fly one way.

DH and I both hate driving tired so we don't do long road trips.

Do all the kids have 2 weeks of for the holidays? My day care closes too and it's so annoying trying to juggle the kids between sitters.

I thought maybe I would just close my office too and go but since i'm not 100% sure I didn't want to buy tickets. May be I will see if I can get someone to come with me. I have done it once with DH and he drove the entire way.

Driving to Florida

My husband and I just did the drive to my parents in Oct. I don't mind it and we stopped overnight the first time in Fredericksburg, VA and on the way home in South Carolina.

Exactly this. One driver is tough.
I've done it FL to NY with 2 drivers and a dog. It's a looooooong drive.

You should check prices of the Auto Train. It's still a lot less driving. Approx. 4 hours to VA train station (from LI) then you said you need to go about 2 hours from Orlando. That's about 6 +/- hours compared to the 20ish hours you would do without the train.
At least on the train you can get up and walk around, eat in the one of the cars, etc.

I just checked the autotrain for my parents and it was $905!!! Cheaper to fly and rent a car. And it's only from VA to FL.

I'm doing it. But there are four adults who drive. We are leaving the 27th and coming back the 4th. I don't mind it. We did it once just DH and I to Sanibel with one stop and had the greatest time eating bad food, listening to music and just talking. This time we are taking DD.

we drive with our 2 kids. we really like it. stop in savannah on the way down and usually go straight through on the way back home. kids are realy good though and love watching movies on their DVD players. i like having all the stuff we need just in the car and having the car in FL.
it's not for everyone but i don't think it's as bad as so many people think.

I couldn't do it, no way. I would rather take a plane that has 5 connections rather than sit in a car driving on highways for hours on end!

Re: Driving to Florida

If you only have one driver and flying is not an option, it can be done. I did it the last 2 years... It can be done in one over night... North Carolina is the half way point and that is around 8 hours with no stops. 10 hours with stops..
