DSLR cameras

i really want a DSLR camera but i have no idea which one to get. i need something that's not too complicated. i'm going to be taking pictures of our families and basically just for fun. i usually get sony camera's cause i like them the best but i've never dealt with a DSLR before. i've been looking at the nikon's and the canon ones. any suggestions?

Re: DSLR cameras

Check out the Canon Rebel - it's a great entry camera for the DSLR user. I have the Canon 30D (the newest version is the 7D - just released).

Find somewhere that you can hold both the Canon and the Nikon to see what is comfortable in your hands too.

I'd go with Ken Rockwell's recommendation. Either the D40 or the D90.

My mom has the D40 & she loves it.

Both are good beginner cameras, but the D90 is a lot more expensive.I have the D90 & the video is a nice option to have but for me it was more about the new sensor technology & the camera.

With the D40, just make sure as you upgrade your lenses that you can always autofocus with them (you can check B&H's site or Ken Rockwell's to see compatibility issues).

You can shoot on Auto & then as you teach yourself photography, you will still be able to switch to manual.

If you're located in Huntington/Northport, you're welcome to meet me in the park & I'll let you shoot a bit with mine.

thank you, thats really nice of you but i'm in forest hills and weekends right now are crazy for me.

i was actually looking at the D40 vs the D3000. i really dont want to pay too much right now. maybe after a few years i'll get an upgrade if i feel i need it.

do you ever get together with the other girls from LIF to shoot together?

Re: DSLR cameras

Nikon girl here.

Canon and Nikon are probably going to be the most popular here.

They have both good entry level DSLR.

I think the D3000 is now the new entry level Nikon.

I wonder if they are replacing the D40, etc.. series. I have wondered myself what the D3000 and D5000 were able to do.

After taking a photo class, I really feel the lens is probably the most important aspect of the camera.

For example, if you get a 55-200mm lens. Make sure you get the VR version (vibration reduction). It might help you relieve some frustration if you have camera shake like I have and MUST use a tripod because MY pics are blurry at such high zoom. I try to stop breathing... but I just $uck at standing still.

Go around, take even a class. It will help you tremendously to force you to understand your camera and basic photography.

That being said, you can use the "auto" and start using as a point and shoot within minutes you open the box.
