EBF moms... how do you do in the middle of the night feedings?

I was only pumping but for the past 2 weeks I am only breastfeeding and it's been going really great. When DS wakes up in the middle of the night to eat I usually lay him down next to me so we are facing each other to nurse and we usually end up falling asleep. This works out great for me because when he wakes up for his morning feeding he is already there next to me and I can just feed him.

So my question is... how bad is this for him to be in the bed with me? Is it really dangerous? I must admit, I really don't get a good sleep knowing he is there because I'm terrified of rolling over on him. What do you girls do?

Re: EBF moms... how do you do in the middle of the night feedings?

I was scared of the baby sleeping with me as well as I thought I would roll over on him. I had a bassinet right next to the bed so it wasn't too much work to pick him up feed him/ change him and put him back to bed. At three months he was in his room and I would feed him in the nursing chair and put him back to bed. Yes I got up three to five times a night but I got use to it and you get into a autopilot and just do it without even be fully awake.

everyone has their own opinion on this...

Personally, we coslept for the first 6 months and it was the greatest thing for us. I couldn't imagine it any other way and will probably do the same with my next child/children. It made EBFing SO EASY especially when he was waking up multiple times throughout the night. I still miss my little cuddle buddy in my bed - he's 10 months now.

i go into jessie's room, i sit indian style on the floor...lay her in my lap, she starts nursing while i check/change her diaper.
about 7 mins. i throw her on my shoulder, she burps and right back down in her crib.

for those 7 minutes, it is worth me sitting up. i don't sleep well at all with her in the bed.

DS shares the room with us. So when he wakes for night feeds DH will get him out of his crib and lay DS next to me. I nurse him and when he falls asleep I wake DH up to bring DS back to his crib.

Re: EBF moms... how do you do in the middle of the night feedings?

I have pretty much always, and nearly exclusively, fed DD lying down facing each other. During the first couple of weeks, we'd often fall asleep during the overnight feeding. I would wake up with every little movement she made, but it wasn't unusual for us to fall asleep. I hated it, but it happened.

We kept her PNP next to our bed on my side and when I would feed her, I would put her down in the PNP after she was finished. It was very easy and a comfort for me and for her as she was getting used to things. We didn't move her into her own room and crib until she was about 9 weeks old. She continued to need the overnight feeding until she was abt 11w, and I would hear her on the monitor, go and get her, feed her on the bed in the guest room, and then bring her back to her crib. By that point, I was getting enough rest throughout the day that I wasn't automatically falling asleep with her during that feeding.

Definitely recommend having a bassinet or PNP in your room if you aren't ready to move your DS out yet. Makes it so much easier for the night feeding.

Same here, I coslept with mine 'cus I would never be able to get up and feed my DS the multiple times he wakes up at night.

With cosleeping anytime he gets up, he just latches on and goes right back to sleep.

Studies have shown that it's actually pretty safe to cosleep unless you're a heavy sleeper or drinker and won't be able to sense your baby next to you. If you don't have this problem, why not give it a try, or use one of those arm's reach cosleeper beds?

Agree with Hayley. I co slept with my boys until they STTN. At least the first 3-4 months. Then they moved to their cribs and they would share my bed for part of the night (after first nursing session)

I put DS down in his bassinet in the beginning of the night when he first goes down (around 8:30pm) but then he wakes up continuously from 3am on--so around 4am he comes in bed with me and we'll cosleep the rest of the night/morning so he can nurse when he gets fussy. It works out great and we both sleep better during that part of the morning.

Like a PP said, co sleeping can be safe and has benefits.

You change her diaper as she is nursing? WOW.. you are super mom! Very impressive... I have trouble just getting him to latch without him getting frustrated in the middle of the night! I can't even imagine multitasking... share your secrets!!!

I feed DS in the living room for the middle of the night feedings. I was doing it in my bed but I kept falling asleep. I find this works well because I don't fall into a deep sleep and can easily put DS back down.

I could have written this myself! My DS will be 2 months on Saturday. I have pretty much been in limbo like you. I EBF with a breast shield and pumped bottle the first month and a half. I only used the pumped bottles though for when I was out and about so I didn't have to nurse in public. I had him in a bassinet right next to my bed and fed him with the breast shield (latch issues) every 3 hours or so (never woke him for feedings). When I was done feeding.. back in the bassinet he went!

For the past 2 weeks I have been giving him a pumped bottle in the middle of the night and weaning him off the shield during the day. I did the night bottle because I am so exhausted and it takes so much longer to nurse then to give a bottle. Its just so much easier for the night feeding. I also found that he fell asleep while nursing because he had to work for it and it was a longer stretch to fill him up. The bottle he sucks down and it holds him over longer because I believe he is getting more quicker. However, my issue with this is 1. I am not able to get too much of a freezer stash because I am using pumped bottles when we go out and 1 bottle each night. 2. I leave the bottle on my night table and it cools to room temperature so I have to heat it. It can take about 5 minutes warming it under the sink, which is torture for me and him! Debating getting a bottle warmer. I never sleep with him in my bed. I don't sleep well because I am paranoid of something happening. So back in the bassinet he goes. However, after the 6ish am feeding he is all perky and ready to start the day. I am not! So I put him in his vibrating chair and her ends up dozing off again or I bring him in bed with me for and we both nap for an additional hour or so. I won't use any blankets past my waist though and keep everything away from him.

**When I was nursing in the middle of the night I sat up in bed, used the boppy (my savior), and closed my eyes while he nursed (1/2 asleep). Burped him, changed him, then back in the bassinet.

In the beginning we had DS in the arm's reach cosleeper (for the first several weeks) but he was such a noisy sleeper that I NEVER slept! We moved him to his nursery and I would go in there for the night feedings, and feed him in the glider.

Re: EBF moms... how do you do in the middle of the night feedings?

My DH and I had one stern rule...I would get up for all night feedings and put TV on and nurse her sitting straight up on the couch. We had a friend whose wife fell asleep while nursing her baby at night in bed, and the baby suffocated. Chat Icon Even now at 4.5 months pp I still don't trust myself 100% to not fall asleep so I nurse her in a rocking chair in her room.
