THIS!!! I don't get why people answer Brooklyn or Queens. You don't go over a bridge to get to them so therefore they are still apart of LI!

Re: For those who don't live on Long Island
I live in Queens.
ETA: I don't consider Queens part of LI and most people I know don't either. I am not part of Nassau or Suffolk counties.

Re: For those who don't live on Long Island
I live in Queens and that is NOT LI in my book - I don't care what the map says.
Most people from the NYC/LI area also agree with this. LI is Nassau and Suffolk.

Re: For those who don't live on Long Island
I do not live in Long Island, as I do not live in Nassau and Suffolk. I live in Queens, one of the 5 boroughs and therefore I live in New York City, part of the United States.
Geographically, I love ON the Island of Long. . . which lays just east of the continent of North America.

Re: For those who don't live on Long Island
I think the difference here is ON and IN
I live "IN" Nassau county which is part of Long Island
Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau and Suffolk are "ON" Long Island.
Since the question was "for those who don't live ON long island," I don't think Queens and BK apply here.
My roommate in college who was from NJ but born in Brooklyn outright refused to accept that she was born ON long island. There is no bridge from Queens to Nassau!!! I agreed that she was born in the BOROUGH of NYC but ON the piece of land called LI. She still wouldn't budge!
Any way, that's JMO. I think it's a pretty funny debate.

this is suck a bizarro argument.
Queens and Brooklyn are a part of NYC. geographically they share the same location position on the Island but so do Haiti and DR...and dominicans don't call themselves Hispanolians... you don't have to cross a bridge to get from Jersey to California either, but that doesn't make Snookie a California girl.
in answer to what the questions means, I am from Brooklyn, which is situated on the island that is long, but that is not connected in any other way shape or form with the culture or politics of that land mass.
FTR, when I got out to LONG ISLAND, I take the Kosckiusko Bridge. that should count for something

I was *just* just going to say, you don't cross a bridge to go from CT to MA or NY to CT or NY to NJ - but the people in CT are from CT, the peeps in NY are NY'ers, the people in MA and NJ are from their respective states.
Long Island is Nassau and Suffolk. Always has, always will be.
I never understood this argument.
Oh and sure, NOW you know about the Kosckiusko bridge!!!

Re: For those who don't live on Long Island
Long Island is an island located in the southeast part of the U.S. state of New York, just east of Manhattan. Stretching northeast into the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island contains four counties, two of which are boroughs of New York City (Queens and Brooklyn),[1] and two of which are mainly suburban (Nassau and Suffolk). The term "Long Island" often refers only to Nassau and Suffolk counties in order to differentiate them from New York City, though all four counties on the island are part of the New York metropolitan area.
So just cause you might not consider Queens and BK part of LI...they actually are.
And the original question was who does not live ON LI.
So if you live in Queens, Brooklyn Nassau or Suffolk you live ON LI.
