SPINOFF: Where to live outside of Long Island
DH and I are planning on moving within a yr just bc of how expensive and crowded long island is becoming. We just want a nicer, more affordable place to live and are ready for a change. I am looking to go somewhere not too too far that is within 8 hrs driving distance of ny so my family doesnt go crazy! I have no clue where to start! I am also a teacher so I would need to switch my certifications too

Re: SPINOFF: Where to live outside of Long Island
PA is great, my parents are from Northeast Philadelphia originally. Most of my family has moved out of Philly to Bucks or Montgomery Counties. As for teaching and getting a job, I hear that it is like Long Island. I was asking family, my uncle is a superintendent right outside of Philadelphia, and said that within Philly, there are plenty of teaching jobs but that most schools are terrible with heavy police presence and outside of Philly like Bucks County and Montgomery County have great school districts and pay more but also aren't hiring nearly as much. It was the same for cops as well (DH is trying to become a cop here on the Island, and I am trying to become a teacher, both are nearly impossible)

Re: SPINOFF: Where to live outside of Long Island
We moved to Putnam County (just north of Westchester) and LOVE it. Less traffic, more property, better quality of life while only an 1.5 hours away from my family in LI. Our house is on the market now, we are staying local since we love it up here

depending where u are in orange county and LI, can be alittle over an hour to 4+ hours. Good school districts are tuxedo, monroe woodbury, warwick, goshen, and cornwall, Stay away from newburgh and middletown. Tuxedo (very expensive though) and Monroe school district are prob the "closest" to LI (the towns that go to the monroe woodbury school districts are harriman, monroe and highland Mills-all those towns are right by the woodbury commons) HTH

Re: SPINOFF: Where to live outside of Long Island
We lived in Summerville, SC for a year.
I am hoping to go back next summer (we still have a house there).
It is about 12 hours away but it is very inexpensive and its on the easier side to get a teaching job since they need teachers down there.
Summerville is divided into 2 school districts (Berkeley County and Dorchester 2). Dorchester is the "better" county but I worked in Berkeley.
I really hope everything works out. I miss it down there!

Re: SPINOFF: Where to live outside of Long Island
Friends of mine lives outsde of Annapolis. Not only is it beautiful there, but she is a teacher and there is a need for teachers where she is. She was able to txfr her certs pretty easily. The neighborhood where they live is reasonable, and the pay scale is close to NY, but not as crowded. Annapolis itself is a bit crowded, but there is every convenience there.
I also have several friends that are in CT. Some areas are way expensive, but some are reasonable, and within driving distance of NY.
DH & I were looking at property in Lancaster, but we decided that we would probably go mad during tourist season. The real estate was very reasonable there.

Us too I admit, it was a huge adjustment for me, and at one point we were going to move back to LI. But between the market (we aren't willing/able to take such a hit on our house), and being more on our feet as parents, moving back to LI is losing its appeal again. I just don't see it as affordable.
The Danbury/Bethel/New Fairfield area of CT is also very nice. There is very little shopping where I live (which I like) so we end up there a lot.

Re: SPINOFF: Where to live outside of Long Island
I live in Foxboro, MA and its a 3 hour drive to my parents house in the middle of the island. Good school district, I was able to buy a house 2 years ago at 185,000 and I have a yard and live on a nice quiet street. And taxes are not bad at all. I would never have been able to afford living on Long Island...even with making more money due to cost of living. I love our neighborhood.

In Jersey - I have friends in Marlboro, Matawan, Lincroft - all really nice.
I work with 2 people that both own homes in Aberdeen/Matawan and their taxes are just as high as mine and I'm in Nassau.
ETS: If you want NJ, you'll have to go further south.

Re: SPINOFF: Where to live outside of Long Island
I live in Central NJ and like it here. FM me if you want to know what the taxes are like in this area. Not as high as LI. To commute to NYC it takes about an hour.

Re: SPINOFF: Where to live outside of Long Island
we just bought in Westchester... I think you get more for your money here in terms of land, not necessarily house size-- although it does depend. And the taxes are kinda high-- but, we can't wait to move in!!
