I agree. And Brooklyn and Queens are part of the 5 Bouroughs which L.I isn't a part of So I never considered them part of L.I.
I think it goes like this. Staten Island, Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn are all the younger siblings of Manhattan. Nassau and Suffolk would be the youngest kids and Brooklyn and Queens want them to know that they "aren't as cool" so they don't associate with them. In reality, Long Island is better because there aren't any good golf courses in Brooklyn or Queens. The only good thing they have is the Mets, and as big of a Mets fan as I am, even I realize they suck.

This thread is SO funny. (I needed a good laugh tonight) How is Queens not part of Long Island? There is no water separating Queens from Nassau and Suffolk. lol It is one long island, all together. An island surrounded by water. I just dont get how it can even be argued.
Because on LIF anything can be argued.
It's SO true!
There was an argument once on the celeb board about how someone's wife was skinny after she gave birth...Talk about RIDICULOUS!
The posters on this site can argue over and be offended by just about EVERYTHING!

when I think of Long Island...I think of Nassau or Suffolk County..
I've lived in Queens, I've lived in Nassau, and I'm now in Suffolk. When I moved from Nassau to Queens, I said I moved from Long Island to the city. When I moved back to Nassau from Queens, I said I moved from Queens to Long Island. To me, while Queens and Brooklyn are physically located on the island, they are boroughs of NYC so I consider them separate from Nassau/Suffolk.
BTW, I have this debate with DH every so often

the question was those that don't live ON Long island
Long Island is Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk.....
THIS!!! I don't get why people answer Brooklyn or Queens. You don't go over a bridge to get to them so therefore they are still apart of LI!
This was my point!!!!!
this is suck a bizarro argument.
Queens and Brooklyn are a part of NYC. geographically they share the same location position on the Island but so do Haiti and DR...and dominicans don't call themselves Hispanolians... you don't have to cross a bridge to get from Jersey to California either, but that doesn't make Snookie a California girl.
in answer to what the questions means, I am from Brooklyn, which is situated on the island that is long, but that is not connected in any other way shape or form with the culture or politics of that land mass.
FTR, when I got out to LONG ISLAND, I take the Kosckiusko Bridge. that should count for something [/QUOTE
Queens girl here, I thought it was pretty obvious what the OP intended with her question, regardless of how it was phrased.

Re: EDITED: For those who don't live in Nassau or Suffolk Counties !
my cousins are all from suffolk county. they all call queens the city.
that gets me bc to me the city is manhattan.
i'm from queens. on the same island as brooklyn which is a part of nyc and nassau and suffolk counties which are a part of what's considered 'long island'.

OMG only on LIF would this turn into an argument!
I am in Suffolk County.
Not only LIF. I got into a VERY heated argument with some random girl in college.
She was hanging out backstage for unknown reasons. She didn't belong there first of all, but we did out intros. Our convo went like this:
Her: "Are you from LI?"
Me: "No, I'm from Queens"
"That's Long Island"
"Umm geographically yes, but politically no. Are you from LI?"
"Yes, Happaugue"
"Oh, that's far out"
"No it isn't"
"It is to me. I'm from Queens, so this is already far for me (Hofstra)."
"Well, you must not travel much"
"Actually I travel a lot, I just don't really find much reason to travel to the middle of nowhere"
She got really annoyed and it somehow ended with her storming out. I never saw her again.
One of my frineds backed me up and was like "dude, the Northern state ENDS in Happague, how can that not be far out?"

In live in Queens County on Long Island.
I do cross a border to get to "The Island" - it's that rough patch in the roadway on the Grand Central Parkway where it becomes the Northern State Parkway. NYC sux at paving streets.

Brooklyn
I find this back and forth 'debate' hilarious. So for geographical purposes, Queens and Brooklyn are considered Long Island. But heaven forbid we get on the subject of taxes, then Queens and Brooklyn might as well be on Mars . I'll have to remember this when we sell: 'beautiful home on Long Island, near the subway, and you only pay NYC property taxes'. lol
Queens here.

and yeah Magellan could not convince me that I am from Long Island.
