everyone should read this (any opinions?)
I WAS LOOKING FOR A WALKER FOR MY dd AND CAME ACROSS THIS ARTICLE: Baby Walkers are Dangerous!
Baby walkers send more than 14,000 children to the hospital every year. 34 children have died since 1973 because of baby walkers. Children in baby walkers can:
Roll down the stairs - which can cause broken bones and head injuries. This is how most children get hurt in baby walkers. Get burned - a child can reach higher when in a walker. A cup of hot coffee on the table, pot handles on the stove, a radiator, fireplace, or space heater are all now in baby's reach. Drown - a child can fall into a pool, bathtub, or toilet while in a walker. Be poisoned - reaching high objects is easier in a walker. Pinch fingers and toes - by getting them caught between the walker and furniture. There are no benefits to baby walkers
You may think a walker can help your child learn to walk. But, in fact, walkers do not help children walk sooner. Also, some babies may get sore leg muscles from spending too much time in a walker. Most walker injuries happen while adults are watching. Parents and other caregivers simply cannot respond quickly enough. A child in a walker can move more than 3 feet in 1 second! Therefore, walkers are never safe to use, even with close adult supervision. Make sure there are no walkers at home or wherever your child is being cared for. Child care facilities should not allow the use of baby walkers.
If your child is in child care at a center or at someone else's home, make sure there are no walkers.
Throw out your baby walkers!
Try something just as enjoyable but safer, like:
"Stationary walkers" - have no wheels but have seats that rotate and bounce. Play pens - great safety zones for children as they learn to sit, crawl, or walk. High chairs - older children often enjoy sitting up in a high chair and playing with toys on the tray. As of July 1, 1997, new safety standards were implemented for baby walkers. Walkers are now made wider so they cannot fit through most doorways and can stop at the edge of a step. But these new walker designs will not prevent all injuries from walkers. They still have wheels, so children can still move fast and reach higher.
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association for Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) have called for a ban on the manufacture and sale of baby walkers with wheels.
Keep your child safe - throw away your baby walker.

This is not new info. Walkers have been labeled "bad" for years. With that said, we have one and my kids love it. I do not leave them unattended when they are in it. I don't have a problem with them. Every parent has to make their own choices.

We don't have one b/c my house wouldn't really work well for one, tight areas to maneuver one through. I say with proper supervision they're fine, but don't know if I would have gotten one myself.

My mom won't let me get one for DS for that reason. Although, I'm sure it's fine if you supervise.

my ped recommends against getting walkers also - and I honestly do not want another big thing in this house so that's why I didn't get one.

Re: everyone should read this (any opinions?)
I remember a big to do about them 20 plus years ago.
They went out of vogue for a long time. Several of my friends with older children never ever even considered one.
I was very surprised to see them still in existance when I registered.

Re: everyone should read this (any opinions?)
Well I had no idea walkers were such an issue , I guess b/c I am a first time mom and never needed it before SO for me this is a new information. I don't know if I am going to get one or not, but if I do ,I know I will not be leaving my child unattended for one sec. I am always hovering over her as it is,lol.

Lack of supervision...that's what the cause of these accidents. I had Jared in a walker. It's not a babysitter.

I think some parents mistook a walker for a babysitter. I have one I used it sparingly and never had an issue with it. I'm sorry but blaming all these injuries above on a walker alone is just as dumb as the parents that don't supervise their children in them. A house needs to be babyproofed when children are in walkers as if they are walking toddlers. So if you leave hot coffee or poison around, put them around a flight of stairs or leave them in your backyard with a pool these tragedies are bound to happen.

I agree...my boys LOVED the walker, because they felt that they were walking, because the excerasucer got boring, because they werent woving around the house.
I just think it is the parents who leave them unattended and that is whey everyone has to suffer. They were NO where near the stairs, because I had them on the first floor with it all the time. Same with the Bumbo seats, and Boppy pillow, things get recalled or labeled as being bad because a handful of parents can be irresponsible.....JMO

Re: everyone should read this (any opinions?)
We purchased one for our DS. I had read this information but we got one anyway. He was always supervised in it. He also walked super-early, at 9 months. So for him it didn't delay walking-- although I do think that for certain DC that could be the case. Maybe it also depends on how long they spend in it He wasn't really in it that much. (But he really loved being able to zip around the house before he was mobile.)

Re: everyone should read this (any opinions?)
My ped advises against walkers too.
My poor DH went off his patio in one of those right into a sticker bush, he still has 2 scars on his face from it and he was being watched..all it takes is 1 sec.
No thank you for us. I'd rather walk my kids around myself with their hands

Re: everyone should read this (any opinions?)
This is not new news it was in baby bargains - my ped made me swear not to get one for her under any circumstances (we weren't planning on it anyway) but he said even with good supervision many kids are getting injured and badly hurt and worse some have died (but that is rarer).
Etd to add - he said while being supervised they can topple if walked into furniture, a wall etc. so it isn't just about stairs and some instances mentioned above.

Re: everyone should read this (any opinions?)
we have teh sesame street one and there is no way he could topple over...not at the weight/height he is now. Its too big ....We have no stairs and the bedrooms and bathroom doors are always closed and I would never let him just "walk around" .......
I think the problem with them are more lack of hand eye coordination etc ....not danger.

Re: everyone should read this (any opinions?)
I used a walker for both my DDs. They loved being able to move around. An accident will only happen if they are unsupervised. Honestly once they are crawling all the same dangers apply, falling down stairs, reaching things ect...it is all about supervision!

Same for us. We had one but you were able to lock the wheels and use it almost like an exersaucer and then take it apart and and use it as a push toy.

Re: everyone should read this (any opinions?)
Personally, I won't use one with DS. Why invite an accident, especially with something that really doesn't help them learn to walk either?
I was surprised that they are still offered for sale when I went to register. I remember hearingthey were dangerous years ago.

I agree.
I truly believe that alot of these reports are due to irresponsible parents who use these things as babysitters. I had a walker when I was a kid and so do my kids. They LOVED it! So long as I'm supervising them, then I feel it's perfectly fine.
