Extra - curricular activities

How many are your DCs in?

My DD is in First grade. Right now she is in dance 1 day a week and girls scouts once a month. They both fall on Tuesdays.

We are currently waiting to get her class for religion which I assume will be during the week too.

She wanted to take up baton twirling as well. I originally told her she had to pick between dance and twirling, but now I am re-thinking.

Do you think it would be too much? Most likely she will have something 3 days a week and once a month 2 activities on one day.

Re: Extra - curricular activities

My DD is in prek and she has 3 regular extracurricular activities (religion, swim, and gymnastics) and we are just so crazy busy. we occasionally take her to library classes and friends parties so it becomes just too much. shes been begging for dance so i have no idea what to do. i told her not this year.

Re: Extra - curricular activities

In first grade, DS did soccer once during the week in the fall and spring. In the spring, he also played baseball, which was another 1, maybe 2 nights during the week. Now, in third grade, he has travel hockey and travel soccer, which have practices Monday through Thursday. He also takes piano lessons after hockey practice once per week. It's busy, but he gets homework done after school and he loves all of the activities.

Extra - curricular activities

My DS is in 1st grade. He does religion once a week, karate twice a week, soccer (one practice and one game a week on Saturdays) and flag football (one practice and one game a week on Sundays).

He is doing fine (enjoying the activities and getting his homework done) but, I am spinning since I have very little downtime. The flag football was not supposed to have practices so a lot of parents were really surprised and are scrambling (since it was billed as working with soccer so they signed their first and second graders up for lacrosse as well which is two days a week).

My DD is in 3rd grade - She goes to Irish Step dance class on Tuesday, religion on Wednesday, and one a Friday a month is Brownies. That's plenty IMO!! I hate running all over the place.

Just gymnastics on Saturday mornings for an hour.
That's all I could handle.

I try to limit to 1 or 2 activities at a time, plus we have religion.

My DS is in fall baseball now, and had signed up for flag football, but it conflicted with baseball too much so we dropped it. He has baseball practice once during the week and a game on Saturdays, and religion every Monday.

In the winter, he will have basketball a couple of times a week and maybe take an art class in the Jan to March window.

In the spring, we pretty much only do baseball because it's 2 games a week plus practice.

DS is my only child though, so if I had more than one, I might limit to one activity at a time.

It's tough to balance. My DS likes to play organized sports, but I also like him to play in the neighborhood and I like to have time for family activities on the weekends. Plus, homework is important.

ETA my DS is in 2nd grade.

Re: Extra - curricular activities

You're going to burn yourself out running all around. DS was in 1st last year and between me getting out of work, rushing to do this and that activity, coming home to do dinner and homework I was near insanity. Not to mention he wasn't putting 100% into anything.

Pick one activity per season and see how it goes. If in the winter or spring she (and you) have a handle on things than add another if it'll work.

I will say this year I work from home, so it has been easier to have him come home on the bus and do his homework right away. The other way was impossible. We're still doing just one activity in the fall and winter. Spring there is a possibility of adding another, but that all depends on how he is doing in school and my mental status. Chat Icon

DS - 3rd grade: religion on Mondays, art class on Thurs, ice skating on Fridays. He does mile club but that's before school on Mondays.

DD - 1st grade: soccer on Mondays, Tuesdays & Sundays; acting class on Thursdays; girl scouts monthly on Fridays. She'll do gymnastics and ice skating in the winter when soccer ends.

They're both going to be doing crossfit kids on Saturday mornings too. Jeez that sounds like so much when I type it Chat Icon Neither of them seems stretched thin but homework has also just begun...

I work in the city but I have a sitter and an exH who works from home and lives in the same town. Between the 3 of us and carpools we manage to get it all in.

I do work, full time. That's the reason for my question. Chat Icon Other kids in our neighborhood/school do like 3 or 4 activities and I don't know how they work it all out lol

The thing with "girl" activities is, they run all year. It's not just a fall/winter and spring/summer thing. Dance, girls scouts, etc...they go from sept/oct to June!

Yes and that's why she only does one.
I'm way too lazy to be running myself ragged.

Extra - curricular activities

My DD is in K and she is taking Gymnastics and Dance on Saturday Mornings. Then twice a month she will have Girl Scouts/Daisies on Tuesday's but that's at the school right after school.

Starting in December I am going to sign her up for Winter Basketball but that falls during the week and I am not really sure how I am going to get her there since my DH and I work full time.

Re: Extra - curricular activities

One each -
K son does baseball (1 week night, 1 weekend game)
2nd gr. son play ice hockey - THAT is a huge commitment. Practice 2-3x a week and games every Sat and Sun early morning. Tournaments over long weekends .....
and religion once a week. - It's a lot.

My parents and MIL help getting him to practice 2x a week - but otherwise, DH and I split up to do everything else.

Extra - curricular activities

DS is in K. He is in Catholic School so we don't need to do religion. He does swimming at 6 on Friday nights, Tae Kwon Do at 6 on Wednesday nights, and soccer at 10 on Saturday mornings but that will end early November.

Re: Extra - curricular activities

DD is in 2nd grade.

This year she does gymnastics 2X/week (Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons).

She also does religion on Monday nights.

In the spring she also plays soccer on Sundays.
We passed on fall soccer since I am due in two weeks.

I work full time, but am local - only 5 miles from home.

I work FT, but switched jobs this year and generally can get out much earlier than my last job which had a lot of evening commitments.

The winter used to be our break with the exception of piano lessons, but now that DS is doing travel hockey, our school year is pretty booked. Aftercare helps a lot so I only have to worry about checking over homework. DH cooks and he'll make things like soups and chili that can be easily reheated or quick meals on the grill. It can still be draining to do everything, but we switch off on the shuttling around to activities.

Extra - curricular activities

My DD does cheer on Sat AM and Monday nights, religion Weds, and Girl Scouts 2x a month also Mon nights. I work close to home but my husband cannot drive which is hard. My parents and in laws help a lot. Now my little DD has soccer Sat AM too so it's a lot of running around. I don't want any more commitments but if my older DD was really into something I'd try to make it work.

Re: Extra - curricular activities

Let them try everything when they're little. The younger they are, the more low commitment their activities are, and they can get a feel for where their strengths and interests lie.

At 11 and 12 my kids only play hockey, but they tried nearly every other sport before narrowing it down. The more invested they became in hockey, the easier it was to drop other things.

this is what we did as well. My DD is 12 and we ended up with swimming. Once they really get into something it becomes a big commitment. She swims 6 days a week, year round. She has off the a week for the holidays and 2 weeks at the end of August. There are local and travel meets on the weekends. It's a lot but she absolutely loves it

DS is in first:
soccer twice a week (wed & sat)
Swim on Monday

DD is PreK:
Swim on Monday (they were able to match times)
Ice skating will start in a few weeks once a week

Many have something every day... I just can't.
