Factor v Leiden??
Does anybody else have this blood disorder? Apparently it's hereditary... 2 of my cousins have it, and bugged me to get tested. Got s voicemail from my doctor late this afternoon saying that i have it. And of course, when I called back, they were already gone for the weekend!! Can anybody tell me anything about it? Meds you need to take?? Thanks!

Re: Factor v Leiden??
Post this on the infertility board, you will probably get some info from there. Factor V is something that could relate to infertility and/or pregnancy loss. It's a genetic mutation that affects blood coagulation. When ttc, they usually use lovenox (anticoagulant injections..simillar to heparin) to treat it. For non ttc or pregnancy, I am not sure it's something that you 'treat'. Perhaps a daily baby aspirin. You may want to ask your doctor to test your PTT (blood clotting rate).
A hematologist would be the physician to specialize in this.

Re: Factor v Leiden??
I have that. I didn't know I had it until my brother developed some clots after a surgery and I was preggo at the time so they suggested I get tested. Turns out my brotehr sister and I all have the genetic mutation. Basically, what my hematologist told me was that it could pose a problem when TTC (for me that wasn't the case) and that if I become pregnant again or have surgery I need to be on lovenox. During pregnancy you need to take a shot of Lovenox until 35 weeks, and then the last five weeks you take a shot of Heparin 2x a day. Also, you are not supposed to take Birth Control.

Re: Factor v Leiden??
I was just tested for this since I developed pulmonary embolisms.
So far I am listed as negative, but the test results are questionable since they gave me clotting tests after I was on anti-coagulants. Once I get off the meds the will test me again to get the real answer.

Re: Factor v Leiden??
I lucked out. My mom and sister both have it (as well as other clotting factors). I tested negative.
It can cause difficulty with fertility and increase miscarrages, but my sister was put on lovenox while pg and had 2 healthy babies. Had to have scheduled inductions tho because the have to make sure your blood isnt too thin. Although my youngest neice had other plans lol.
Anyway usually things lile birth control pills and smoking are out of the question as these clotti.g factors increase your chances of having a stroke. Many people are not too bothered with it as long as you do the right thing.
