Feeding DC Organic Food
Do you feed your children organic food? If so, is everything organic or just certain things?
DD is starting veggies tonight, and I want to feed her only organic stuff- but DH doesn't agree (only because he doesn't know why they say to feed kids organic, and when I try to tell him, he says its bull****.)

Re: Feeding DC Organic Food
It was this same discussion at our house that brought me to the decision to make my own food for Lucas.
I don't want him having the added sugars or preservatives so that was why I was leaning towards organic.
So to answer your question...ALL fruits and vegetables are home-made. I get as much as I can from the Farmer's Market in Union Square.

Re: Feeding DC Organic Food
Right now we are using the Gerber Organics.
When I have a little more time I will make DS' food with organic veggies.
I'm not sure why anyone would think it is BS? Is it because you don't believe they are truly organic? Or because you don't think you need to do so?

Re: Feeding DC Organic Food
If I am shopping and see organic I will buy it over reg. Why would I want to or allow DS to eat things that has chemicals, sprays, hormones, pesticides and god knows what else

How hard is it to make your own food?
Is the stuff at the Farmer's Market organic? DH works right by there- I might have to send him there with a list!

I know in my case, the reason DH thinks it is BS is because he is stubborn and figures that he didnt eat any organic food growing up, and he turned out fine. I hate to tell him, but times are different now, and I don't want DD eating any pesticides, chemcials, etc.

Re: Feeding DC Organic Food
I make my own baby food and I use only organic fruits and veggies. The thought of pesticides and whatever other preservatives, food additives, coloring, etc. they put in food scares the cr@p out of me.
By making it myself I know what's going into her body.
Making it is SOOOO easy. I just made a few batches just before, froze it and we're set for the next few months!
My favorite book so far...

I only give DS organic fruits and veggies. I would not have it any other way. I want him to have the most healthiest foods. When I move into my new home I am going to make his foods from scratch.

I honestly don't feel that it's very hard at all...sometimes it's faster than making dinner for DH and I. Plus a little makes so much. I have a freezer full of baby food for him (it lasts 6 weeks frozen). I steam all of the veggies and the use a food processor...comes out great!
Yes...the vegetables I have purchased from the market have been organic but even where it doesn't state it or I haven't asked the person I still prefer those vegetables because I like to support the local farmers there. Just a personal preference. I've always gotten fresh stuff from them...not always the case with the supermarket in my experience.

thanks for posting this book. I was going to ask what the cookbook that everyone reccomends for making baby food was.

Re: Feeding DC Organic Food
We also only feed organic and no meat. DC'S get their protein from organic tofu and eggs.
We follow the Super Baby Food book by Ruth Yaron.
She outlines what to intro when and why.
For the skeptics out there, one of the reasons to go organic and pesticide free has to do with their body weight. They are so little that the pesticides are so much more concentrated in their systems than ours.
BTW: Everything was largely organic 50 years ago before the widespreda use of pesticides and preservatives. Today the average food product travels from approx 2000 miles away to get to our table. Who knows what they are using to prolong the freshness?

Honestly, we don't eat out that much. Family is mostly MIL's house and she cooks very healthy.
Mostly, because the majority of restaurants cook whole butter or trans-fats (or an equally bad equivalent). I can't be sure how healthy it is made and due to them wanting you to come back they usually really up the fat content. When it comes to chicken or dairy the hormones used scare the @#$% out of me. Girls are getting their periods at younger and younger ages nd some are talking about a possible link to fertility issues.
The Today show recently did an expose on "healthy" choices at restaurants. The Ruby Tuesday TURKEY burger has 1,500 calories and well over 30 grams of fat It is worse than a Big Mac.
Speaking of fast food... maybe once a year we'll have it.

I use Earth's Best and Gerber organics, but I also buy the regular baby food... We all try to eat as healthfully as possible. We are raising Cailen as a vegetarian, so we will always be on the more natural side...

Re: Feeding DC Organic Food
I only use Organic baby food and I only use that jarred kind right now b/c my mom bought a ton when it was on sale recently.
once this supply is done, I will make his food from organic fruits and veggies and then onto meats etc...
IMO its not BS....People say things likes " Oh I grew up on normal food" and Im ok....BUT in reality, SO many things can be linked to the pesticides from heartburn, to cholesterol to aches and pains and issues people DO HAVE they just fail to remember or realize it could be from that.
I only know 2 people who were raised the same age as I was organically...they lived a different lifestyle but let me tell you, the comparisoin to them to me is beyound crazy and I consider myself fairly healthy....But they have none of the issues I have had and I may be guillable but Im not taking chances with my kid if I can control it....
Have you rea dthe label of some of the baby foods? How do you think they can make food last with a shelf life of 3 yrs? Its scary and I wish the public was more aware.

Re: Feeding DC Organic Food
If you look at some of the labels you can see the difference. Especially on the stage 2 & 3 stuff.
Earth's Best Label
Beechnut Label
Why would I give my baby or toddler something with ingredients in it that I have to google to see what the heck they are? Liz, show him these labels, that should convince him.
