To answer the original question, I say “a fever”.
About “make Thanksgiving” I could understand if they grew up with immigrant parents. For example, in Italian, we would say “facciamo la festa” which translates literally to “let’s make the party”. So I could understand how the family continues it in English.
His mom, who I think is the reason for this, is a 3rd generation American. There are no immigrants and no foreign languages! I have heard other people say make a party thou. The taking “a” out of “a fever” is unique thou.

Oh i remembered the word my FIL says funny is beautiful. He pronounces it beau-TEE-ful.
