i have been thinking of whether or not to post on this thread or not because i have VERY strong opinions on it.. but here goes.. i'll keep it light..
i have 2 children on the "autism spectrum".. my pediatric neurologist recently informed me that she would like my youngest ADOS tested because she thinks that he too could be. (although mild case of PDD--unconfirmed)..

so genetics..yes of course.. although i don't have any autism on my side and thier father doesn't either.. however, i do have dyslexia, bipolar and other psych illnesses in my family.

vaccines...who knows.. i too was on that kick and still am as my oldest was completely changed after the MMR.. yes, Liza, i know developmentally he was "at that age" ..

immune system.. GI problems?? ear infections.. now this is where i get really into it.. yes, my boys seem to have had weak immune systems as babies suffering from ear infection after ear infection... yes, there were GI problems.. for gods sake i had to give my oldest many an enema to make the poor baby even go!!

so here's what i believe for those who chose to keep reading. i believe children with autism are ultimately born with some kind of susceptibility to autism and related disorders... i believe their siblings are also born with that as well.. i do however believe in the environmental trigger.. could be vaccines.. or something else..
thimerisol is very dangerous... my son is 8 and got lots more than the little ones today..
my son also had alot of ear infections and was continually treated with Augmentin.. brand name for amoxicillin.. a fairly common drug they use to treat otitis.. anyway... when the drug is made it has a strong ammonia property.. i believe autistic kids do not excrete things like amonia and thimerisol adequately .. (this is why chelation therapy works sometimes.. it rids the body of toxic substances).. also it "damages" or "weaken" the gut.. (the augmentin) which is why i believe the gluten free diet works (it works to repair the gut)..
my story is (for my first) he had gotten the MMR at 15 months.. after that, he had gotten a fever of 105 which was pretty consistent for about 3 weeks.. in that time i was seen in the ER 3 times.. they prescribed amoxicillin for 10 days and when that didn't work augmentin for another 10.. i gave it too him in hopes it would clear up his diagnosed double ear infections .. he was never the same again..

so to close.. i don't know the cause of autism.. i would never profess to know something that can't be proven wrong or right even by professionals.. do i think it could be the combination of vaccines.. yes
augmentin...yes
who knows?
i split up my vaccines for Spencer (who by the way.. is dEFINITLY NOT autistic..)he's the first child i split up as i did not know half the stuff i know now back then with the other 2. i do not give ANY combination shots at all .. i break them up
to the previous posters...
yes there IS thimerisol in vaccines.. don't be fooled by everything you see and hear
no.. MMR is NOT the only vaccine with thimerisol in it..
Yes you absolutely can find the split up version of MMR.. my DR. gives it all the time.
sorry so long i could go on and on and on

oh yeah.. i wanted to add.. that this is just MY opinion.. as a parent who does alot of research and talking to people... including professionals.. i see both sides of the story..
and just because i am an RN.. i do NOT profess to have the KNOW on this

so sorry to hear about your boys. I just wanted to add that I have noticed lately that children who have been diagnosed with autism the mom's have been RN's. I know of 6( in the last year) and my other gf was a hair dresser. I wonder and its just a guess when you mentioned amonia my gf the hair stylist was around amonia all day with the colorings and I wonder if being an RN would there be any exposure from something.
A collegue of mine in the dental field her DAUGHTER has autism and I wonder too if she was exposed to anything, mercury from fillings- yes silver filling are still out there. Chat Icon Just a thought of professions and autism.

funny you should say that.. there are 6 people on my UNIT alone with children with autism... we are all nurses.. my co worker and i were just talking about that yesterday.

Augmentin.. brand name for amoxicillin..

I'm sure you all knew I would add my pharmacology expertise to this post. I don't want people to stop giving their children amoxicillin due to fear of autism from it. Augmentin is not the brand name for amoxicillin. Amoxil is the brand name for amoxicillin. Augmentin contains an additional ingredient - clavulanic acid, which helps treat infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to regular amoxicillin. It is not usually first line for an ear infection, regular amoxicillin is. Augmentin is usually used when a person had a relapse of the same infection, or when the doctor has reason to believe that the infection is due to resistant bacteria.

p/s - From what I read of the article, it does not say that Augmentin is linked to autism, just that more research needs to be done to evaluate whether or not some subsets of patients are at a greater risk of neurotoxicity from it. Here is a link to the article's abstract for anybody who wants to check it out.

like i said.. i am no expert but on the other hand i am a pediatric nurse and every reference i have ever researched has said this:
GENERIC NAME: amoxicillin and clavulanic acid
BRAND NAME: Augmentin, Augmentin XR
DRUG CLASS: Amoxicillin is an antibiotic of the penicillin type. It is effective against different bacteria such as H. influenzae, N. gonorrhea, E. coli, Pneumococci, Streptococci, and certain strains of Staphylococci. Chemically, it is closely related to penicillin and ampicillin. Addition of clavulanic acid to amoxicillin in Augmentin enhances the effectiveness of this antibiotic against many other bacteria that are ordinarily resistant to amoxicillin.

again, no i would not want to persuade people not to use it.. it was a matter of MY opinion

There is also some indication that the father's age at the time of conception plays a somewhat significant risk factor in the development of autism:

I have heard this too. Although men produce sperm and can create children at almost any age, even up until their 80's, they have been doing studies questiong how "good" the sperm actually is as a man gets older.

Honestly, I really haven't worried about this until people started asking if I was worried Chat Icon .

I don't believe that the shots CAUSE autism. However, my opinion is linked to Kristi's in that a child is BORN with the suseptability to autism and there are factors that contribute to the onset. I believe that if a child has it, they have it from the beginning.

Re: For those moms with concerns about link b/w autism and vaccinations

I know someone with twins. One has developmental delays, one does not. The one with the delays sometimes I wonder if he's on the spectrum (he has some characteristics). Anyway, they both were in the same womb and both got the same shots and one has "issues" and one doesn't. Makes me believe it's not really the shots.

Chicken pox can be fatal:

Deaths from Chickenpox: approximately 100 deaths (CDC-OC)
Death rate extrapolations for USA for Chickenpox: 99 per year, 8 per month, 1 per week, 0 per day, 0 per hour, 0 per minute, 0 per second.

Deaths from Chickenpox: Every year there are approximately 5,000-9,000 hospitalizations and 100 deaths from chickenpox in the United States. (Source: excerpt from Facts About Chickenpox (Varicella): CDC-OC)

The #'s aren't as high as other types of death but it happens. The thing that worries me about the Varicella vaccination is that they don't really know how long it lasts, so we could be setting our children up for Shingles later in life which can be deadly sometimes.

The only shot I have delayed was the MMR. Damien didn't get his till he was almost 3 and I plan on doing the same with Jaidyn.

don't be scared.. it's just a theory. plus, like i said its a combination of things and certainly many many kids go on this repeatedly and NOTHING happens.. i would still treat my kids with it if they needed it.
