Freezing meals for when baby comes

I know this is kind of a food/recipes question, but I figured you all might have some good suggestions! We're still pretty new in our town, so I doubt people will be showing up at our house with meals...any suggestions on what meals are good to freeze? I'm also going to post this on the food/recipes board later Chat Icon.

Re: Freezing meals for when baby comes

I made a bunch of containers of fresh home made pesto sauce, to put with chicken, pasta, sandwiches, etc....YUMM!

I also bought a few kashi frozen meals, and a few frozen entrees by Amy's organics.

We stocked up on chicken, chopped meat, and ground turkey, plus bags of frozen fruit and veggies...so there's tons of stuff to make quickly.

Mmmm, the pesto sounds like a really good idea--pesto on anything is probably one of the few things I can never get tired of! Chat Icon

I made a huge double batch of sauce last week and we froze pint size containers to throw pasta, ziti etc together. We also stocked up on some meats that are easy to throw stuff like tacos or a meatloaf together. I made extra meatballs and we froze them. We also stocked up on real simple things like chicken nuggets, hot dogs, mac and cheese.

Same here!!

LOL I have like 5 "mini containers" for using with meats and sandwiches, then I have 5 big containers for using it as a pasta sauce.

Its so fast to make too, I know we'll be running out in 2 weeks to get more Chat Icon

Re: Freezing meals for when baby comes

With my DS my sister made me a few frozen meals and I made some as well.

We did chili, sauce, lasagna, baked ziti, beef stew, chicken soup, and home made mac n cheese with peas and ham, shepherds pie, chicken pot pie, taco soup. Really any caserole will work.

My sister even made me these really hearty filling muffins to use for breakfast "on the run". Just take one out of the freezer and pop it into the microwave for 30 seconds and done! They were so delicious, I have to get the recipe. Full of grains and fiber to really get ya full.

eta - when I make my sauce I freeze them in ice cube trays. Once frozen I pop them out and store them in ziploc bags this way you have individual servings. About 2 cubes is good for 1 serving of pasta. Plus it takes up less room in the freezer Chat Icon

Great idea!

I plan on making sauce, soup, stuffed shells, dahl and maybe something else.

Re: Freezing meals for when baby comes

DEFINITELY do this... DH and I would've starved to death otherwise.

Beef stew, chicken soup, meatballs in sauce, lasagna, shephard's pie, baked ziti, and lots of frozen veggies. Stock up on frozen fruit and yogurt - a smoothie is a great snack that you can have one-handed.

Re: Freezing meals for when baby comes

I'm going to prepare ziti and lasagna about 2 weeks beforehand and freeze them uncooked.

Beyond that, I'll be using my slow cooker A LOT!!!

Re: Freezing meals for when baby comes

I plan on using the slow cooker many many days
But I know that my wonderful aunt will prob cook meals and send them home with my mom
However I am not counting on that and I plan on having easy meals on hand to make - so I will freeze meatballs, make sure I have pasta handy
I am also going to get the frozen Kashi pizzas and lots of ground chicken/turkey as well as freeze chicken to make quick stirfry and easy recipes with them
I also will have a lot of the frozen veggies on hand and luckily I am like a block away from a fresh fruit stand that I know DH would not mind running to on the way home from work

Chili
Sauce/meatballs
Chicken cutlets (I grilled and breaded/fried a bunch and froze them in a big ziploc)
Stuffed Shells (I make Giada's turkey and artichoke stuffed shells - it freezes beautifully and is delish!)
Marinate meats then freeze them - that way you can just defrost and throw on grill
Chicken/Turkey burgers

Re: Freezing meals for when baby comes

I plan on having my freezer stocked with Dream Dinners meals. This place is awesome and perfect for new Moms. You go and prepare all the meals at one time. They prep everything, chop, etc and you just take the meals home with easy instructions to re-heat them. I have gone twice before and everything tastes great. They also give you the nutritional info so post baby if you are counting calories it makes it easier.

What do you put this stuff in? I am worried of freezer burn! Even with the good zip locks I feel like some stuff get freezer burn either way.

Soups/Stews I usually just freeze in aluminum pans with aluminum foil. Never really have a problem with freezer burn but they aren't in the freezer for more than a couple of weeks.

Smaller items I use either gladware/ziploc tupperware or bags depending on what it is.
