I take everyone's keys as they come in the door ..........
If you're wasted, you don't get them back - I don't care if you call me every 4 letter word in the book ...........
This would be my suggestion. On my friends 21 first birthday our friend was hit and killed by a drunk driver, We went out with a Designated driver and some morons couldn't do the same and killed him. I a SO AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING. It turns my stomach everytime I hear it.
I would tell you to call the cops next time but he's a cop and Im sure he'd get away with it anyway.
I would however tell him how disgusted you are by his behavior and tell him to think how he would feel about drunk drivers if one hit and killed his son god forbid. He's a cop im SURE he's witnessed a drunk driving accident.

I like the idea of taking keys in the future.
I think the best thing would be to get his keys & drive his car home & then get a ride back. I think the idea that your car isn't there the next day & you'll look like you couldn't handle your drinking (which IS the case) is what makes most people to drive & turn down the safe althernative.
If he absolutely refuses to do it, call his wife & ask her if she has any suggestions.
I'm not surprised it's a cop. Alcoholism is in every profession.

I really wouldn't invite him to an event that has alcohol anymore.
Taking the keys is a great idea. If he doesn't want to hand them over before, tell him he's not welcome. If he's drunk and won't hand them over, then do everything in your power to wrestle the keys from him.
