I'd let him keep the down payment and move on. He left and the rest of the payment is supposed to be on completion of the work. I doubt he'll call or return.

Before he left on Tues, some of the conversation was that the materials (color) we wanted couldn't be delivered until Wed evening, so he would be back on Thurs. (that was before he stormed off saying he wasn't coming back.) Wed morning he called DH and was still pretty nasty and sarcastic. DH just kept asking him "OK, where are we going to go from here - do you want to move forward or what" -knowing that the work already done was worth way more than the down payment. the guy refused to answer DH several times so DH just kept asking - where do you want to go from here? He finally said that the materials would be dropped in the driveway Wed and he would be back Fri to complete the job. So, he did show up this morning (and hour late, but still) and they are working now. He still has an attitude, but he is doing it and DH is just sitting in the backyard watching.

The only reason we let him come back is because we were really in a jam. We talked to 2 other contractors (through friends) who were reluctant to finish it but would have - but they couldn't do it for several weeks. WE are having about 25 people for a BBQ on the 12th and about 40 people on the 26th. The way the deck was left on Tues, there was no safe access to the pool,(would have to climb over wooden beams) so unfortunately we were at this guy's mercy.
So far it all looks good - just hoping the work is done well

You should speak with some contractors or friends who know what they're doing - b/c if you have any probelms down the road this guy is obviously not showing up -

Lesson learned, next time, no matter HOW badly you want a job done, don't give your hard earned money to someone who treats you that way - HE is not doing YOU any favors, you're PAYING him to do a job!

Lesson learned, next time, no matter HOW badly you want a job done, don't give your hard earned money to someone who treats you that way - HE is not doing YOU any favors, you're PAYING him to do a job!

I have been out for a little while and just got home. DH said they are really doing a very good job - he's happy with the work. So that's one good thing. And they guy has his son working with him today and DH has been chatting with the son, who's been very nice and friendly (talked about some very personal/life type things, not just the job, so who knows what the hell the father's problem is)

Thanks. They still have to come back tomorrow to finish up - I don't want to be around when he's leaving because I'm sure DH will have a few choice words for him Chat Icon

So, they were here all day Fri and most of yesterday - but the deck is done. The owner had an attitude and was nasty the entire time he was here. You would think that after a few DAYS of being angry, it would be time to cool off and just let it go. We had a cooler with sodas and waters for the guys, each day and offered to buy lunch - which was again met with a nasty snarl. His son was here Fri & Sat also, and that is who DH dealt with. The son was very nice and seemed somewhat embarrassed by his father's behavior (aside from just being a miserable person, the father took a nap under a tree during one of the days - seems kinds of odd to me. I would think he would go in the truck, but whatever Chat Icon )

Bottom line, they wound up doing a very good job - DH said he could tell that the workmanship was excellent (and he's pretty good at knowing that kind of stuff). I'm happy with the way it came out. So, although I would never recommend this company and would never want to deal with him again, the work was done very well. (Added pics in an album).
