Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Hi...I am new to this thread. Joining because I took the 1 hour twice and both times my sugars were borderline high I kinda refused the 3 hr and my doc said thats fine we are just going along as if it would be positive. So I met with the nutritionist and I followed a strict diet for about a month and then kinda fell of a little. is weighing "big" whatever that means! Both my DH and I are over 6 ft tall so even my doc says "do you really think your going to have a small baby"!! I am also a nurse and have been checking my sugars periodically mostly in the mornings and if I dont feel well, and they are always between 80-120 which I think is pretty normal. Not sure with GD if there is a range but in the hospital we use 70-110 for our pts. I do try to eat snacks which seems to help...cheese and fruit or greek yogurt, but Im not always able to fit them in. I usually have Special K Protein Plus cereal with fat free Lactaid milk for breakfast, a turkey sandwhich on whole wheat for lunch and whatever I can cook up for dinner limiting my carbs. I used to have a sugar free jello or pudding for an evening snack, but I rarely do that anymore either. I am 33 weeks and I am just going with the flow. As my mother said, take it with a grain of salt and do what works for you! I look forward to chatting with you all and hopefully gaining back some motivation to do the right thing

I don't mean to sound preachy, but you should NOT take GD with a grain of salt. GD can be extreamly serious for your baby. It's not just the baby's weight, GD affects your baby's blood sugar as well which could be dangerous.
As for morning blood sugar numbers, they should be UNDER 100. In fact, my fasting number was not allowed to be over 80.

I did not have GD, but I worked on a med mal case where the damages were due to undetected (basically untreated) GD and there were a lot of effects, including the baby's premature birth and subsequent issues.
I am shocked your OB would let you not take the 3hr. I failed my 1hr by less than 10 points and and I took the 3hr.
Best of luck to you

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Thanks Ladies for your concern & MrsRBK when I said taking things with a grain of salt I meant in general not stressing and doing what works for you. As mentioned I am a nurse and I am very well aware of the effects of GD and the seriousness of the situation. However, I have learned how to live right mentally and physically knowing that sometimes we can stress over things and which will keep your body in hyperglycemic & hypertensive state. Therefore, I eat right and think right and so far and I have been fine. I value your opinions & your concern, thanks and best of luck to you as well.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Just got the news, its official, I failed my 3 hr. I go in to see my nurse tomorrow to show me how to test my sugar and get a diet plan. Earliest apt. for a nutritionist is next Monday.
I have never been on a diet in my entire life, I am terrified.
Anyone else?

I'm sorry!
I had GD with my first pregnancy and my OB thinks it's safe to assume I will have it this time around (I'm getting tested next month).
I was terrified also and felt so guilty, like I had done something wrong. Once I met with the dietician, I felt much better and I promise, it's not as bad as you think it will be! I was able to control my levels with just a modified diet and didn't need insulin.
While it was definitely annoying having to test my sugar 4 times a day, after a week or two it became second nature (this coming from the person who was TERRIFIED of needles!).
The diet isn't as restrictive as you might think and on the plus side, you end up not gaining too much weight!
If you have any questions, feel free to FM me anytime!

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Hopefully this will make some ladies feel a little optimistic if they develop Gestational Diabetes.
I found out in my 6th month that I had GD. At that point I had gained about 10-12 pounds. They wanted to maintain it with my diet so I started right away. I lost 4 pounds.
By the time I delivered, from conception to delivery, I was up 6 pounds total.
10 days after giving birth I am down 10 pounds from my ORIGINAL weight.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
I was diagnosed with GD ~2 weeks ago and met with the endocrinologist last week. I was put on insulin already, 4 times a day, and I still find my numbers are high at times even with a perfect diet for the day (although I have had a small amount of ketones in the morning, so I may be restricitng a little bit). Honestly I'm so frustrated at this point I feel like I can cry all the time. nothing seems to be working!

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Bumping for myslef....My baby measured b ig at 32 weeks and I had extra amniotic fluid so they made me test again and I just found out at 33 weeks I failed the 1 hour. I am refusing the 3 hour and just going to proceed as if I failed that too. I feel so over whelmed right now. Going to see the nutritionist next week when I get back from vacation, but for now I am going to readt thru this and go from there. Thanks to all that contributed to this thread!
