Definitely feeling a little scared about the baby's size. Last night we had our growth sono - he's weighing in at 7.5 & I'm 36wks. But...I'm taking it all with a grain of salt. I've read on here several times that the growth sonos are way off. We'll find out how my doctor feels about it on Monday when we see them. My GD has also been controlled by diet - no meds.

My dietician does the same thing - they're just stating the facts. We do in fact have a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes within 5-10 years of giving birth. Just keep doing what you're doing - eating right & exercising. Chat Icon

I hear ya, those sonos could be way off. I think your baby's weight will be fine because I'm sure that is an overestimate and I would imagine he/she will be no more than 8 lbs.

Ummm.. Yeah, I was scared, everyone kept telling me I was going to have this huge monster baby based on the GD and my growth sonos.... guess what... DD was born a whopping 6lbs 11oz!

Gee how nice of them to scare you and after all that you have a great size baby!!

I hope that is the case with me - the growth sonos are just showing large. Uggghhh...

I'm getting through this, the only thing really annoying is the 4x per day testing. It's so hard having to do it 2x at work.

Ok, I've been craving fast food - I normally never eat it when I'm not pregnant, but when I am, forget it! I was reading a post from earlier on this thread and someone said that 10-piece chicken mcnuggets did not affect the levels? It has 22g carbs and 23g protein. Just wondering, maybe does the protein balance out the carbs? I would be thrilled if I could have that for lunch one day!! I know everyone reacts differently, but please post any fast food suggestions. I'm lucky that I'm a "plain" eater and do not need all the toppings if that is what it takes to be able to have it.

I can't help you with fast food suggestions - haven't had any for over 4+ years, but I definitely agree with you about not having any sauces, etc. being that's what'll have all the sugar in it. Oh how I used to LOVE chicken mcnuggets with the sweet & sour sauce...Chat Icon Chat Icon

Just remember, what works for someone might not work for you. For example, there is NO way I would have been able to have BK like Jess - maybe just the burger with no bun, but definately not the O-Rings. I know a 10 piece Chicken McNugget would have sent my blood sugar SOARING!

WOW, Jess, onion rings? LOL - I'm glad I don't reallt like those, but I don't think fries would be a good idea, haha. I might just try a chicken sandwich one day! Thanks.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread

I'm a little worried at how well I'll be able to control this now. 5 days a week I sleep and wake around the same time but I work the graveyard shift 2 nights a week (7pm-7am), I'm wondering what that is going to do to my sugar levels.Chat Icon

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread

I have a question. My dr told me to call NSUH and ask for an appt with diabetic councelor & tell them I failed the 3 hour. I did and they said I HAVE to take these two 2 hour each classes before I can meet wth the counselor. The classes are either 10Am or 5PM in Great Neck. I work form 9-5 in Manhattan adn it's just not convenient for me. I asked if I could just meet with someone but they said no, I must take the classes first.

Anyone else have to do this?

I have a call in to my Dr to see if I can just meet with my own nutritionist or something. I honeslty can not take more time off work at this point. I'm trying to save days for when I need them when the baby comes.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread

No, I just met with the counselor, they didn't even mention anything about classes Chat Icon I'm sure the classes are very helpful and all, but in light of your work schedule, I would check with the OB and see if there's anyone else you can see that doesn't require it.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread

I'm new around here, didn't know about this thread, it's great that you girls have this!! This is my second pregnancy with GD, so I've been through this all before. I know it's a really hard diagnosis to hear at first and is sooo overwhelming, but you will adjust quicker than you think, the diet is not horribly restrictive and the monitoring is a lot of work, but not as bad as you might expect. If you have any questions or I can help at all, please don't hesitate to FM me.

Diana, I live in the city, I have a really great nutritionist who was on the Mt. Sinai diabetes education team, let me know if you want her info.

Christine, foods- for breakfast, stick to protein and away from carbs-for some reason, glucose is harder to keep low in the morning-eggs, cheese, cottage cheese, plain yogurt are all good. Mid am snack- some nuts & a glass of milk (again carbs/fruit may make your sugar too hi in the am). Lunch- a salad with chicken, turkey, shrimp, etc, and a small piece of fruit or 1/2 a sandwich (1 slice of whole wheat bread, with a whole sandwich's worth of meat/cheese), a burger (or turkey burger) w/ 1/2 a bun & some veggies. Afternoon snack-small pc of fruit & some cheese or 1/2 an english muffin w/ some peanut butter. Dinner-whatever you'd normally have, just with a very small amount of starchy sides (like a couple of TBS of rice). PM snack- a single serving bag of soy crisps somehow works, fruit w/ plain yougurt, veggies & dip, cottage cheese w/ fruit or veggies, fruit & some cheese. Drink lots of water. It's not bad, really!

It's different for everyone. For me, I could not have any cream cheese/cottage cheese or milk as it always shot my numbers sky high. I had a very hard time with carbs. Milk has alot of carbs and sugar in it. The only yogurt I could eat was sugar free, like weight watchers or dannon light.

Christine, a container of yogurt, a couple of TBS of cream cheese or peanut butter. They recommend skim milk, bc it's healthier, but there are actually fewer carbs in whole milk. I actually have an issue where milk makes my sugar hi in the am, so I can't have coffee w/ breakfast anymore, I have it w/ a handful of nuts as my mid-am snack. Basically, they'll give you a list of foods that qualify for each group of foods + serving sizes. You'll be told to eat 3 meals & 3 snacks. I'm going to see if there's a way to scan my lists onto my computer & fm them to you so you'll have something to go by for the time-being. And Jess is totaly right about the exercise!
