Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Well, the 2 string cheeses before bed did NOT work for me
I decided to try a small bit of no sugar added ice cream and 2 string cheeses (what a combo) and when I woke up, my number was 128!! Higher than ever! I am getting frustrated

i'd reach out to the nuritionist...see what they suggest....
you may need to be put on a pill at night. I know MrsRbk took either 1/2 or 1 pill at night to help her morning number...

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
I know, crazy right?!
I want to call the dietician one the one hand, but on the other, I don't want to be an alarmist. It's only been a week. I am going next Thursday for a follow up appt. so perhaps I will experiment until then and just see what she says then if I can't control it.
I started thinking last night that maybe pills wouldn't be so bad after all. I mean, if all I have to do it pop one or a half of one before sleep and it will help my numbers, that doesn't sound too bad?

I had problems with my fasting numbers, and was put on a half dose of Gluybruide which I took at night with my evening snack.
Have you tried adding some carbs along with your protein at night? My evening snack (every night!) was 8 Rye flavored triskets topped with cheese of my choice.
While the ice cream is no sugar added, dairy tends to have alot of carbs and natural sugars as well, so that could play a role in why your number was so high.
It's frustrating, I know, but in the end it's SO worth it!
ETA: With the 1/2 dose of the meds, my fasting numbers went from the 90-100 range, to 70-80 range in the morning.

thanks for the bump. there are some great suggestions for breakfast but what do you guys eat for lunch and dinner??
lunch - i vary...
i can do a footlong tuna sub from subway - i'll eat HALF the bread and ALL the tuna.
10 american cheese slices & pretzel sticks
when i'm home - i'll do breakfast for lunch (ww english muffin & scrambeled eggs)
burger king - 2 burgers (no bun) and medium onion rings
white castle - 6 mozarella sticks and 6 chicken rings
bologna slices and 100 calorie snacks
hope this helps!!!!!

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
dinner is VERY difficult (sorry - forgot you asked that part).
i'll do spaghetti and TONS of meatballs (no joke - cocktail size, i'll have 14) and sliced mozarella cheese.
2 meatball parm subs (NO bread - so without the bread - it's like 4 large meatballs and cheese)
hot dogs & beans
grilled chicken (short cuts or home-made) and small potion of mac & cheese or noodles & sauce (america's choice is MUCH better on my sugar than lipton)
fast food:
arby's - NO bread - i'll have the roast beef from 3 regular size and a small mozarella sticks
same white castle as lunch
same burger king as lunch
wendy's is also great - the chicken nuggets - you can have 10 and it barely touches the carb limit!

And just to prove that EVERYONE is different... If I had eaten ANY of the above my sugars would have been through the roof! Carbs even appropriately mixed with proteins would send my numbers sky rocketing.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
I just wanted to pop on here and say I've been doing this for about a month now and have found that almost any meal with carbs has a negative effect on my sugars. A bowl of cereal Kills me!
But, the worst was the fasting. I couldn't get below 100 no matter what I did and started the insulin injections two weeks ago. They worked wonderfully, my numbers are consistently below 90 now and I have a snack at night when I do the injection. The injections are really pain-free and easy to do. Plus, I didn't like the idea that the pills could affect the baby and the insulin doesn't. So, if it's recommended to go on insulin, don't worry, it's not nearly as bad as you think!

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
omg Gerty - i missed cereal so badly i can't explain it. I had the same issues - so much so that i didn't even bother - because even MILK gave me higher numbers... i am making up for lost time - once you have the baby - cereal is QUICK/SIMPLE and something you can scarf and not miss much... i am not joking when i tell you we've gone through about 6 BIG boxes of Lucky Charms (my latest obsession) since i got home...
i was always worried about the insulin thing because of the needle factor...yes - EVERYONE i know (my mom's entire side of the family is diabetic) says it hurts less than the finger prick - but it's also a mental thing!
i'm so glad to know you're doing well - i had no idea you had GD!!!

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Thanks for bumping this thread.
It seems to be common - but I'm having a hard time with my fasting numbers!!!
The last three days they've been: 120 114 112
I don't get it. Last night I had peanut butter and an apple for snack.
Maybe I should grab a handful of nuts when I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night?

the apple is a natural sugar - as is all fruit - sometimes HIGHER in sugar than fruit drinks, etc. I had to avoid fruit because it SPIKED my sugar...
there's a major learning curve (or at least i found there to be one at first)...you need to learn what works for you... for me - it was all about string cheese at night...

Did you just eat the string cheese? Then aren't you not getting the carb? Will that make the ketone levels worse (I've been moderate for the last two days )

trying to remember....i think i did just do the string cheese - though occasionally i'd do a glass of iced tea with it - so i was getting the carbs there.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
I should introduce myself...
I was diagnosed with GD - 5 or 6 weeks ago - sad I don't remember. Anyway, so far I've been able to control it with diet, but I'm thinking a nighttime pill is going to be needed soon - possibly after tomorrow's doctor's appt. As the pregnancy progresses my fasting numbers are getting worst - it's so random. One day it's 87, the next it's 98. A lot has to do whether I have nighttime snack. I'm also feeling it's just too much food....but I lost 4lbs in 2wks - go figure.
Those that have delivered already - are you still going for a follow-up test? My dietician said usually 6 wks after you deliver you should go for another 1 hr. Has anyone done that? Does anyone sporadically check their sugar too?
Was anyone else told the statistics that we have an increased chance of developing type 2 diabetes within 5-10 years?
My Dad had type 2 - he didn't manage it well at all. DH has type 1 - what a difference....
ETA: It's funny reading this - I agree with davenjess - I actually say - cheese is my insulin. Something about LF Sting Cheese gets my fasting numbers down....but good Lord I'm already sick of it.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
I just found out today I failed my 3-hour test. I'm very nervous about this whole process and still cannot believe I'm dealing with all this. I meet with the nutritionist on Sat.
The worst for me will be the pricking!!

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Lori - I was the same as you. My fasting numbers were always too high, however they were usually around the 100 range. Just a half dose of glyubride (sp?) did the trick for me. I found the ONLY snack that worked for me every night was 8 rye flavored triskets with cheese. Go figure! For the most part though I could not eat any carbs whatsoever.
As for the retesting post partum, my Dr. was adament about it during my pregnancy but at my 6 week post partum check up she never mentioned it or told me to schedule the test. Honestly, I was happy about that. I know I probably should have mentioned it though.....
I've also thought about checking my blood sugar randomly, but I then I forget.... your brain turns to mush when you give birth! Preggo brain turns into Mommy brain!
I also lost weight... in fact, my total weight gain was 13lbs my entire pregnancy (and I lost almost 30 by 3 weeks post partum). I didn't even any weight my last 4 weeks of pregnancy and actually lost 3lbs my first week on the GD "diet"

bumping again...
Did any of you ladies "cheat"? I mean just on a special occasion. We're having friends over and nothing fancy, but DH suggested pizza so I don't have to cook and it can be easier. Is it horrible if I have a slice? I almost feel as if I should not do my levels since I know they will be high. How did you handle?
