Did any of you ladies "cheat"? I mean just on a special occasion. We're having friends over and nothing fancy, but DH suggested pizza so I don't have to cook and it can be easier. Is it horrible if I have a slice? I almost feel as if I should not do my levels since I know they will be high. How did you handle?
Yes, once in a while I did. It was rare though. But I was also on medication to control my fasting number, so if I knew I had a special occassion, I would actually take a half a pill (which was all I took every night to control my fasting number). This way I was able to "cheat"
However, I didn't do that often, just really special occassions. As far as the pizza, do you tolerate carbs okay? For me, I couldn't have any carbs, but I know some girls can and instead of having regular pizza, how about you have White Pizza, there's no tomato sauce on it, which is a big culprit in raising your numbers.
ETA: Even if I had once slice of pizza my blood sugar would sky rocket... but that's just me. Everyone is different in what type of foods they could tolerate with GD

Of course everyone's numbers are different, but on two occassions I've had pizza. I've found keeping it to just one slice & having a big salad works fine & my numbers are in range. When I push it & go for two they're high. It's definitely trial & error.
Have fun & enjoy that slice - eat it slow!

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Just came back from the doctor's. They're still happy with my numbers & do not see a need for meds at this point. Thankfully the latest handful of almonds at night are getting my fasting numbers down.
Baby is doing well & measuring just fine.
Next Thursday starts my weekly Bio-Physicals! We also get a sono at that visit & we can't wait to see him again - it's been 16 weeks! I can't imagine the changes!

Thanks - I don't plan on cheating often, so far I've been following the diet for every meal. The only thing I've been doing is increasing the protein slightly (i.e. having 3 egg whites instead of 2 or having one egg white and one whole egg) in the morning because I'm STARVING between breakfast and that morning snack. So far, the numbers have been steady even after doing that. I LOVE white pizza, thanks for the tip, I had no idea the sauce is a culprit in raising the blood sugar. Maybe I'll just order myself a slice of white. The only other thing that I'm missing is ice cream :(

The no sugar added fudgciles were great too to feed my chocolate and ice cream cravings.

Thanks for the info; I think our pizza place does a whole wheat crust too. Good to know about the sauce. I had it with lunch yesterday, not too much. It did not affect my numbers which is good, but probably better to limit it if I'm already being bad with pizza :)

Also, if you did have the no-sugar added ice cream or any dessert, when did you have it? With dinner or did you space it out? Just curious as to when I'd sneak it in between the meals and number checks.

for me - i did it as my night-time snack....so there was no testing afterwards - until the next am...
i fm'd you about the ice cream - check the frozen section in the supermarket - it's sold in 4 packs....
the no sugar popsicles were a fave of mine and STILL ARE - we have a box in the freezer right now actually :)

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
HEllo Ladies, I will be joining you all with GD for the next 2 months. I ust started testing last night. My after dinner #'s were 108 and i have to be under 140. I was so happy until I took my fasting this morning. I have to be under 90 and I was 95. How bad is that?
Can anyone give me some suggestions of your night time snack you eat to keep your #'s low?

I was just told I have it 2 weeks ago, so I'm with you. I had thought 95 and under was the cut-off? Even with it being 90, getting 95 is not bad, it's so close. I have been having triscuits and cheese as my nighttime snack and so far, it seems to be working. The dietitian said I could have 5 crackers, but I usually have 4 with one ounce of cheese - either the string cheese or regular cheddar. Everyone is different of course. This is so overwhelming, isn't it?

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Hi ladies, I've posted every now and then on this board but really need some help... I just found out I have GD and am having a real difficult time finding an endocrinologist specializing in GD the one recommended was out of network and everyone else I've called can't see me until Dec., I'm due Nov. 2. I live in Miller Place and desperately need to find a dr. Any recommendations would be great!

Each doctor is different = whether they go by the "old guidelines" or the "new guidelines". It sounds like your doctor & my doctor are the only ones that go by the new guidelines - aka 95 & below for fasting & 120 2 hours after testing. The old guidlines are under 90 for fasting & 140 1 hour after eating.
Jburke - I think I posted yesterday on your seperate thread on what works best for me - NO Carbs at nighttime. LF String cheese worked for a while, but made me icky after having it every night. The latest is a handful of almonds. HTH!

To be honest - I have GD and was not recommended to see an endocrinologist. I just saw a dietician once & report my #s to her weekly. I also see my OBs weekly.

Re: GD Girls.....Support & Q & A Thread
Has anyone been "scared" about the size of the baby? My numbers, knock on wood, have been very low. At my 31 week sono, the baby was measuring 4 + lbs already and the dr is concerned it will be a big baby. The thing is that since my numbers have been low, they can't blame the GD. So now I'm freaking out that my baby is too big!! Also, the dietitian annoyed me last weekend because she was scaring me about getting type 2 later in life. Not that I'm Miss Perfect, but normally, I'm a runner and workout several times per week nad have never had a weight issue. I also think that I'm borderline GD. Her answer to that was "oh well, runners eat more carbs, so you have to be careful, over 50% who have GD get Type 2 later in life". It just got me upset because I'm already stressing over so much and do not need to hear that right now.

Definitely feeling a little scared about the baby's size. Last night we had our growth sono - he's weighing in at 7.5 & I'm 36wks. But...I'm taking it all with a grain of salt. I've read on here several times that the growth sonos are way off. We'll find out how my doctor feels about it on Monday when we see them. My GD has also been controlled by diet - no meds.
My dietician does the same thing - they're just stating the facts. We do in fact have a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes within 5-10 years of giving birth. Just keep doing what you're doing - eating right & exercising.

Ummm.. Yeah, I was scared, everyone kept telling me I was going to have this huge monster baby based on the GD and my growth sonos.... guess what... DD was born a whopping 6lbs 11oz!
