Re: Genetics question! Blue-eyed parents have brown-eyed kid?
Impossible? No...
Probable? No...
Generally speaking 2 blue eyed parents WILL NOT have a brown eyed child...
But then you can get into some of the other genes that determine eye color...add in a few mutations...and BAM....Brown Eyed baby from blue eyed parents...
Now while I say it is possible...It's also more probable that maybe Dad should take Mom on Maury....

Brown Eyed parents having a blue eyed child is an entirely different thing...and takes us back to brown being a dominant trait and whether or not you have the light eyed allele...
Since both of you have brown eyes..and your child has blue eyes...you know that both yourself and your DH have the brown eyed gene that is dominant and the recessive light eyed allele...
Essentially what happens with Blue Eyed Parents having a brown eyed child means that one or both parents have the dominant gene for brown eyes yet they also a genetic mutation (of sorts) that overides it giving them blue eyes instead of brown...

I was under the impression that 2 blue-eyed parents could only have blue-eyed children. But I imagine there must be some exceptions.
Parents with brown eyes or any other mix can have children with any color eyes.

Re: Genetics question! Blue-eyed parents have brown-eyed kid?
My cousin has blue eyes even though her parents and grand parents all have brown eyes. She looks just like her father with blues eyes. So I guess yes it's possible. I also know someone who has blue eyes , so does her DH and grandparents on both sides, but their child has brown eyes.

Totally possible. It actually is NOT true that brown eye color is always dominant.
very true - I have brown eyes and olive skin tone. My DH is very blond with blue eyes. Our DD is fair and blue eyed!

Re: Genetics question! Blue-eyed parents have brown-eyed kid?
Looks like most everyone slept through biology class. It was the purple, yellow & white corn that put everyone to sleep I assume.
Brown is dominant over both green & blue. Blue is the recessive gene to both green & brown...However more than one gene goes into eye color. So while unlikely, completely possible - and it more than likely be a result of a gene mutation.

Not really. It's not altogether common, but the probability isn't that low. The probability of 2 brown-eyed parents having a child with blue or green eyes can be over 20%, depending on the color of the grandparents' eyes.

It's still very possible as a gene mutation. It's not just Brown/Blue/Green that goes into eye color.

Re: Genetics question! Blue-eyed parents have brown-eyed kid?
From my understanding:
- 2 blue eye parents are MOST LIKELY going to have a blue eye child. BUT it "can" happen that they have a brown eye child. If there any brown eye people in the grandparents or parents' siblings?
- 2 brown eye or hazel parents can have blue eye children. This is our case with DS. We had a 15% chance he would have blue eyes. But that depends on the genes of the grandparents and parent's sibling eye color too. We have a lot of blue eye people in our family in both sides (parents and siblings).

It's still very possible as a gene mutation. It's not just Brown/Blue/Green that goes into eye color.
Yes it is possible...but it's not probable. Basically what I mean is that while it is genetically possible, in most cases, it's just not going to.
We were taught in school that brown eyes are dominant over blue eyes and while this is, essentially, true..there is, or rather than can be, more going on in determining eye color. Part of the issue is that most of what we are taught in school is still based upon Mendel's research...which was published prior to 1900.
Essentially in order for 2 blue eyed individuals to have a brown eyed child it would mean that one of them techniquely has the brown eyed gene...but, due to a mutation on the OCA2, that person doesnt have brown eyes...when they then have a child they pass along the dominant brown eyed gene but NOT the mutation.
I did my Genetics term paper on the subject...it's pretty interesting...
