Re: Genetics question! Blue-eyed parents have brown-eyed kid?
I guess mom had an affair with the milkman b/c my eyes are GREEN and my parents eyes are BLUE. And it's saying there's an error. So it won't let me go forward. I tested myself and then the brown-eyed girl - she must be a ******* child too.

Now while I say it is possible...It's also more probable that maybe Dad should take Mom on Maury....
Not really. It's not altogether common, but the probability isn't that low. The probability of 2 brown-eyed parents having a child with blue or green eyes can be over 20%, depending on the color of the grandparents' eyes.
I believe I was referring to 2 blue eyed individuals having a Brown Eyed child...
You were, so was I. I clearly mis-typed, though. The probability of two BLUE-eyed parents having a BROWN eyed child can be greater than 20%. The probability of two brown-eyed parents having a blue-eyed child can be 50% (or even higher in some instances).

Lets not talk about how i'm the only sicilian in my family with light hair, light eyes and fair skin.
remind me not to go up against you, when death is on the line
someone do the odds of my kid coming out with blue/green eyes.
my dh has brown.
mine change color, from blue to green to grey.
my mom has blue green, my biological dad had blue, I think, but his mom and two of my four aunts have brown.
if you are wrong, I will hold it against you forever

Re: Genetics question! Blue-eyed parents have brown-eyed kid?
I just tried this and it gave me an error....says "the 2- gene eye model does not allow you to have brown eyes when your parents have blue & green eyes!"
I have to go tell my mom that sh1t brown eyes are NOT allowed !

Can you show me where you are getting the 20% from? I dont wish to argue or question your information...It's just that the 3 genes that are known to effect eye color cant easily explain the outcome of 2 blue eyed parents having a brown eyed child..While science understands that there is a mutation or a modifier gene at play they dont fully know what happens...
In order to know the probability you first have to find out where specifically that mutation is....and how many in the general population are carriers of the mutation...The mutation would be in the mother or the father NOT in the offspring...
Im only curious b/c I did my Genetics term paper on this very topic and at the time there wasnt any information available on the subject of "probability of"...

Neat calculator! I have green eyes, DD's father and family have brown. She was the 5.2% for the blue ones she has at this point.

Re: Genetics question! Blue-eyed parents have brown-eyed kid?
Yeah, genetics are tricky cause you dont know what traits are lying dormant. My cousin and Dh have brown eyes. Grandparents on both sides have brown eye. One of their girls has Green eyes the other blue as the ocean. We think it may come from the maternal great grandmother. Not sure...
My brother in law has Blue eyes, only one out of his 4 brothers and sisters. nobody has a clue where it came from.

According to this calculator only one of our kids would end up with brown eyes. The rest are blue and green!

That's the one I posted.
It just won't allow you to put "hazel".

Term paper?? I thought it was a thesis proposal??
Whatever, I'm still waiting for you to explain how DH & I can both have hazel eyes, and DD's eyes are blue (when I was hoping for green ).

Re: Genetics question! Blue-eyed parents have brown-eyed kid?
Kind of off topic - but also a little interesting - one of my friends works in the field of genetics and we had spoken about eye color, etc..
Without going into too much detail she was indicating that one of the 'challenges' with eye color is that sometimes (not always) like to art up their eye color. What she would classify as brown becomes "gold" or "hazel" or "amber". She said a lot of people say they have green eyes - but she'd call them blue - so it throws off her work.
Eh - there are SOOO many variables and the fact remains that you never REALLY know what you are going to get until you actually do IT.

Re: Genetics question! Blue-eyed parents have brown-eyed kid?
Al's a living example of this. Both parents have light eyes. His 3 siblings have blue or green eyes. His are dark brown. So in his family, the odds were 1 in 4
(btw, he's the spitting image of his father except for the eyes )
And we've got the only 2 brown eyed grandchildren (of 9).

Re: Genetics question! Blue-eyed parents have brown-eyed kid?
My DH is one of 5 kids in his family, both parents have brown eyes All 4 of his siblings have light blue eyes, he is the only one with brown.
My Dad has really light blue eyes, my mom really dark brown- I have green(not hazel) eyes.

I have brown eyes and olive complexion. When you first look at me my eyes look very dark, but once you look closer they are light brown and sometimes , depending on the light and /or makeup I wear they seem greenish/gray -brown(if that makes sense). The strange thing is that I never knew that until just few years ago when my friend asked me if I was wearing lenses.
