Getting to know Mastic week...
Anyone hear this on the Opie and Anthony show? They are talking about Mastic/Mastic Beach all week...and what I heard is not good

This whole thing is ridiculous. Not every neighborhood on LI can be like Belle Terre or some other uppitey area. Mastic isn't bad. I grew up there, my parents still live there. Would it be my 1st choice of a place to live no, but for others it is an affordable place to live. Most of my girlfriends still live there because of this fact. It is a middle class neighborhood with a large population of blue collar workers. Give the town a break already.

you have to learn to laugh at yourself sometimes, I think it is all in good fun that is JMHO
yeah, but what it's doing is bringing widespread attention to the town and giving it an even WORSE reputation than it already has. Normally I would agree, but in this case I guess it has struck a nerve with me because it'ss every day now. And I guess I feel that it is putting my family and friends down so of course I feel compelled to defend them. I think it's natural.

and eventually it will start to bring down property values from these people giving it a bad reputation. i mean, just look at the people on these boards who have never been to mastic and now all they know is what is said on the radio. its very sad actually. it was a very bad joke when randy did it. but now carrying it over to a different radio station and going on and on isnt helping the situation any.

I agree, you shouldn't take yourself too seriously but last time I checked none of these hosts live in the area.
I remember years ago there was a spoof on Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer on the radio and it said that "All the people in Mastic Glow" in reference to the Power Plant. That I thought was funny because it wasn't really putting anyone down.
I guess I want to defend the area as well because I do know people who live there as well as there are a number of people on these boards who live in the area too.

I am not getting mad - I just get upset, cause it gets such a bad rap over here and honestly, it isn't as bad as everyone says.
There is such a big community of people here trying to get it to be a better place and if there are others that keep bashing and bashing and bashing, it won't become a better place.
I live in Shirley and I know ALOT of the people in the area, it isn't as bad as it is cracked up to be, but unfortunatley because of people keep putting it down, it will always be the  Mastic/Shirley area

The worst part of the whole area & the source of MOST of the problems for the last 20 years IMO is that poor excuse for an Indian reservation. I have a lifelong friend that was married to an "Indian" & they had a modular home built there. Holy mother of god, that place was the scariest, most horrifying place I've been to in my life. And my parents owned a business on Jerome Ave in the Bronx during the 70's & 80's when you couldn't even get a cop to COME to that street in the Bronx, so I'm not easily scared. What I saw in that reservation was Abandon houses, pit bulls & rotties foaming at the mouth running everywhere, chickens used for fighting laying dead, broken cars, syringes on the ground, garbage & crap everywhere. Its looks like something out of a mad max movie.
The crime, drugs & low lifes in the reservation spill out & into that entire community & its an effing shame.
However if Randy or any other Jackass DJ said something about that the whole nation of genuine Indians & wanna-bes would be ALL OVER IT!!!
Why can't a regular neighborhood of people want to stick up for their home? why is it so wrong for them to expect an apology?

I am from Howard Beach, I grew up hearing every kind of mafia joke, rich guinea joke, racist neighborhood joke - and if i though it was funny i laughed and if i didn't think it was funny i moved on.
I personally believe that people just have too much time on their hands now and they spend that time pretending to get all offended - with that free time maybe build up the community so no one can say anything bad about it.

That's very different than being called trash (essentially, garbage). Being called mafia and rich doesn't compare to being called trash. And at least HB has very high property values, so it obviously won't be scaring anyone off. Mastic can't afford anymore bad publicity that will even further bring down the property values.
I think anyone would rather be called rich guinea than white trash, don't ya think?

how would you know whether or not the current or former residents of mastic or shirley that wanted the apology are the posters here?
The fact remains the same, if he said it about a town that is mostly minorities, or the indian reservation the apology would be expected & would have come much sooner. His remarks were ignorant & he was made aware they were offensive to many. Saying sorry is a very easy thing to do and its almost always the right thing. That's like "lessons from your mother 101"
