I think it's a matter of getting the GOOD info out there too. and not having your town used as "comedic" fodder.
it's hard to change a perception of something when the negative is still being projected to the greater public.
any stereotype fights against this. you can make similar arguments about religious perceptions, race perceptions
This is soooo true... however, on this thread and other threads regarding this issue no one has stated anything really positive about these areas. Let's here 'em!! I'm curious because I know that all I hear about Matic, Shirley, etc. is how crappy it is... I'd like to hear how it's NOT crappy. I'm assuming that the people calling into these radio shows don't negate the DJ's comments... they just complain and reprimand... am I wrong?

how about the radio station hosting some kind of clean up event for a park out there or something. they CAN use their positon as a platform for good here too.
This is a GREAT idea!!!

I don't think it's necessarily that you just don't want to hear it.

you are fighting against reality on one side (the real problems) and the COMPOUNDING of them by idiots who'd rather knock the problems to get a laugh and maybe some ratings.

Good points, obviously. In perfect world, every person and every business would work for the greater good of mankind.
But O&A ARE comedians. Their JOB is to "get a laugh and maybe some ratings". They are not philanthropists. Why is it their, or KRock or XMs job to clean up Mastic? Sure they are perpetuating the poor perception of Mastic. So are the people who physically ARE making it a less than perfect town. The anger is misplaced, is all I'm saying.

That would be nice... though I doubt it will ever happen...if Randi was *SO SORRY* then he would do this... Sadly, I think his apology was just a front. O&A are doing it just to be mean, and while I do listen to their show, I don't agree with being bullies to be funny. Enough already. It's yesterday's news.

no no no I wouldn't say SHE was obnoxious, she has every right to vent... I meant the little guy (when posted alone) is obnoxious. This is purely my anger towards this guy:
See I don't find him obnoxious I think he is more like hmmm I don't get would you please explain it to me
Now this guy---> is obnoxious!!
I like him
You would

I'll go first 1) Mastic/mastic beach & Shirley are home to some of the most affordable homes on LI which enables the dream of homeownership to come true for many that would otherwise be unable. 2)william floyd school district has championship sports teams & has even produced professional athelets 3)the waterfront area there is probably the most beautiful & has the best ecology out of all south shore waterfronts short of the hamptons 4)the history of the community is rich with 3 & 4 generation familes living there in what started out as their summer vacation homes 5)it's a short drive to the hamptons & easy access to Sunrise hwy which makes communting better 6) its the birthplace of William Floyd 7)there is plenty of shopping in the area now.

I don't think the anger is completely misplaced if people are trying to change the area already.
while they are "comedians" (and I use the term VERY lossely) I guess I feel it's ANYONE in the communities "job" to do what they can to help out. to just sit there and bash something...someONE...when you could do something is sad to me.
If it's really true that this area Mastic/Shirley was the dumping ground on LI for all these years...I think the whole community of Long Island owes the area a little something. after all, they just collected all of the NIMBY junk the other areas didn't want.
unfair.

Agreed, 100%. But I think we're doing a lot of assuming that the people of Mastic spend all this effort on cleaning up their towns rep...
Meanwhile, my SIL and BIL live in a great area of Mastic- Manor Park- it's adorable there- city block streets, great little ranch houses. very tidy and safe and adorable. And that horrible murder happened around the corner from them. These things can happen ANYWHERE. They live in a great neighborhood.

Awesome and I agree As "bad" as everyone makes it, I think Smith Point is one of the nicest beaches Long Island has. I love going there in the summer and hearing the assorted bands, etc. It's not overcrowded with city dwellers, it's clean (compared to other beaches) and I feel "at home" there. They have a beautiful monument for the flight 800 passengers. The shopping over in M/S is great too...everything you need is there.

Kelly- I agree with both of your posts. The reservation is completely different than the rest of the town. I am over in Mastic and Shirley a lot for my job, and it is sad that the small area of the town is reflecting on it as a whole.
There are beautiful parts to Mastic and Shirley, and some beautiful homes also, with hard working people.
What I don't understand is how some people are not understanding why people who live there are getting offended. Listen, I am the first to roll my eyes are someone being offended, but this is where they live. Jokes are being made about where you chose to establish your life and buy a home, of course people who live there will be a little annoyed about that.
I live in Patchogue, and many times people have said some unpleasant and untrue things about where I live and it does bother me. It's human nature to feel that way and be defensive. Some people may not give a rat's azz one way or another what anyone has to say, but I would think that most do.

Re: Getting to know Mastic week...
People say bad things about my town a lot and I get sooo upset!!!!!!! I totally feel how you would be offended by what he said and what others say.
I do have to admit though, I have always heard these things about the area and have witnessed a lot of bad things first hand in certain parts of the area. So, I clump the entire area into one which is wrong and I apologize for that. I do exactly what people do to my town. It is so wrong.
Now knowing some good things about the area, it has opened my eyes more.
Did that make any sense?

Kelly!! Thank you for this - it is soooo well said, that I don't even know what to add to it.
I must say - things have changed over the years and it has gotten better.
I will admit - the area isn't at 100%, there are good and bad areas, but the bad doesn't outway the whole area.

Re: Getting to know Mastic week...
I wrote a candid post a few weeks ago about my opinions on the school district if anyone wants to search for it.
I lived in the area until I went to college. I will say as many positive things as I can here. But before I do I will say that unfortunately this is a bad case of the bad ruining it for the good. I think some things that are said unfortunately are true. But about part of the population. Not all of it. Probably not even most of it. I think this negative press is not what the town needs right now and certainly I feel like it takes them 2 steps back from an already long road to recovery.
So here is the positive. I have SO MANY great memories from my childhood that stem from living where I did. Every single weekend was spent camping at the beach in the summer. Right on the ocean, four wheeling and all. And it's right there. When I was younger we lived only a few steps from Shirley beach. It was awesome!!
As far as the schools go, I had wonderful teachers. I graduated in 95. sports weren't as good as they are now. But music and art programs were phenomonal. And I will note that all of my friends and I turned out quite successful. I know there is a difference now given the population of families that have moved there. But I do still strongly feel that you can be successful in that district with the right upbringing. Again, see my post about the school districts.
The rich history of the town was mentioned above. William Floyd himself signed the declaration of independence. His estate is in Mastic Beach. There is a lot of history. St. George manor is there as well. In the 60's i think the town started to develop as summer homes to middle-class families like mine who lived in the city and built summer houses out there. And eventually moved there full-time. That is how my parents got there. Both also attended WFHS. But grew up in brooklyn and the bronx. Check out this website, it is a pretty good one on the history for those truly interested in it.
http://www.spoonercentral.com/knapp.shtml
I could read that site for hours!
And also mentioned was the proximity to the east, also a plus! And shopping too, very close to the riverhead and bellport outlets. In addition to many stores being right in the town and I hear they're building more. Access to the LIE and Sunrise and Montauk Highway is right there.
As far as the homes, also mentioned before, very affordable even in the areas that are more desirable than others. But you have wonderful developements in the towns. The Woodlands for one. And I know there is another million dollar section in mastic near forge river. I forget what it is called. They have the new golf course there too.
Hope that helps

I am so surprised that people care this much. That is what these radio personalities DO, they make silly jokes. I just will never see the big deal.
I am from Howard Beach, I grew up hearing every kind of mafia joke, rich guinea joke, racist neighborhood joke - and if i though it was funny i laughed and if i didn't think it was funny i moved on.
I personally believe that people just have too much time on their hands now and they spend that time pretending to get all offended - with that free time maybe build up the community so no one can say anything bad about it.
your from howard beach? how old are you? because I grew up here the past 31 years and I don't really think anyone "we" grew up with would ever make fun of our 'Hood" Alot of people are proud to live here.. Did you happen to see the large turn out for the Columbus day parade?

i am talking about people from outside the neighborhood who have get the wrong idea about us based on a few isolated incidents. . .that was the point i was trying to make.
i thought this post was about what people though from outside the neighborhood - false stereotypes, etc.

I agree, we ALL face stereotypes. But considering HB has such expensive property values, the stereotypes that some people have about the area obviously don't hurt the residents in an economic sense and it is considered a VERY desirable area. Whereas Mastic is considered undesirable by most, and homeowners have already low property values so things like this do not help.

I totally agree, there were several members of various civic associations from mastic/Shirley that came forward immediately to express concerns about "the jokes" causing further economic damage to an area already severely affected by the press it got because of crappy landlords renting to Multiple sex offenders & the government agencies that place them in housing overlooking it. Being an Italian-American I find extreme Mafia stereotyping irritating too, but the reality is people actually aspire to BE in the Mafia or try to portray that image. Nobody tries to portray the image of "trailer trash".
