Okay i get the point you are trying to make in relation to property value - I wasn't considering that aspect when I wrote my post.

Being an Italian-American I find extreme Mafia stereotyping irritating too, but the reality is people actually aspire to BE in the Mafia or try to portray that image.
Nobody tries to portray the image of "trailer trash".

Kelly I'm Italian as well and you hit the nail on the head. Some people WANT to be like Tony Soprano, but NO ONE wants to be "trailer trash". Chat Icon

I understand what you mean. Not picking on you, just showing you the side I don't think you were viewing it from.

Re: Getting to know Mastic week...

I have never been to Mastic or Shirley. So I had to ask DH is it a bad neighborhood based on the radio commentary? I remember seeing a nice house on mlsli in that neighborhood so I get why people would be upset if thats not a true depiction of the neighborhood, people will not want to buy there if they dont really know the neigborhood.

Re: Getting to know Mastic week...

I think every area has it's good and bad. My sister lives in Mastic and she has a beautiful, large and affordable home with an enormous backyard. Her neighbors are delightful, kind people with loving children. There is tons of shopping. If you go three blocks to the left or right of her, YES there are dumps and problems ... but ... doesn't every area have its issues???

We bought in Lake Ronkonkoma years ago and everyone told us at the time ... don't buy there ... the town isn't the greatest. Well, I can tell you firsthand ... it's nice over here. We have great neighbors too and we're very happy. It's not perfection, but it's nice, safe and fine for us and our family.

Honestly, I don't think that anywhere is perfect. Every place has its pluses and minuses. Mastic/Shirley is no different. I don't think it's a bad place to live or raise a family at all!

I think it's a matter of getting the GOOD info out there too. and not having your town used as "comedic" fodder.

it's hard to change a perception of something when the negative is still being projected to the greater public.

any stereotype fights against this. you can make similar arguments about religious perceptions, race perceptions

This is soooo true... however, on this thread and other threads regarding this issue no one has stated anything really positive about these areas. Let's here 'em!! I'm curious because I know that all I hear about Matic, Shirley, etc. is how crappy it is... I'd like to hear how it's NOT crappy. I'm assuming that the people calling into these radio shows don't negate the DJ's comments... they just complain and reprimand... am I wrong?

Totally right.....sooooo many callers from Long Island and Mastic/Shirley called in to basically degrade the town more

KellyFG posted some good points about the area
Posted by KellyFG

I'll go first
1) Mastic/mastic beach & Shirley are home to some of the most affordable homes on LI which enables the dream of homeownership to come true for many that would otherwise be unable.
2)william floyd school district has championship sports teams & has even produced professional athelets
3)the waterfront area there is probably the most beautiful & has the best ecology out of all south shore waterfronts short of the hamptons
4)the history of the community is rich with 3 & 4 generation familes living there in what started out as their summer vacation homes
5)it's a short drive to the hamptons & easy access to Sunrise hwy which makes communting better
6) its the birthplace of William Floyd
7)there is plenty of shopping in the area now.

I think the biggest problem is that because it is one of the cheapest areas in Suffolk, you have the homeless shelters, the shelters for the sex offenders, etc. People buy homes and then get money from the county and state to house these people, and it's usually in the most affordable areas. I don't see that changing.

I don't get why people are getting mad about what some random guy says about some random town....if you live there and you like it, who gives a $hit what O&A say about it

you have to learn to laugh at yourself sometimes, I think it is all in good fun that is JMHO Chat Icon

I have to disagree... I was watching Jay Leno once and he passed a comment about Levittown not being nice (bill oreilly is from here) and I was PIZZZED he's probably never even been here.

And even on here if someone says something abou Ltown I always defend it!

At the time That part of Westbury was Levittown! Levitt built that some of East Meadow and some of Hicksville. It was all called Levittown and later divided and named westbury,hicksville and east meadow.

Thats why sometimes you hear Billy Joel refer to his home town as Levittown but it was annexed to Hicksville later

I am so surprised that people care this much. That is what these radio personalities DO, they make silly jokes. I just will never see the big deal.

I am from Howard Beach, I grew up hearing every kind of mafia joke, rich guinea joke, racist neighborhood joke - and if i though it was funny i laughed and if i didn't think it was funny i moved on.

I personally believe that people just have too much time on their hands now and they spend that time pretending to get all offended - with that free time maybe build up the community so no one can say anything bad about it.

Not sure why you are confused. I am referring to the people who wanted the apology not the people responding on this thread - is that why?

how would you know whether or not the current or former residents of mastic or shirley that wanted the apology are the posters here?

The fact remains the same, if he said it about a town that is mostly minorities, or the indian reservation the apology would be expected & would have come much sooner. His remarks were ignorant & he was made aware they were offensive to many. Saying sorry is a very easy thing to do and its almost always the right thing. That's like "lessons from your mother 101"

according to census data mastics mostly white... Races in Mastic:

* White Non-Hispanic (77.7%)
* Hispanic (12.1%)
* Black (6.1%)
* Other race (3.6%)
* American Indian (2.5%)
* Two or more races (2.3%)

I appreciate the stats. My feeling is *if* the area was occupied by more minorities than "white trash" as he said, WBLI would have forced him to apologize within 24 hours or he would have been fired. No business anywhere wants Al Sharpton & that whole circus marching in front of their building. The problem for me is since he didn't pick on the "Indians" or any other minority it seems to be ok. I'm sorry, its not because when derogatory comment are made about ANY group of people, if the group expresses their concerns the apology should be quick & without question.

Re: Getting to know Mastic week...

I am a faithful O&A listener and the point of "Mastic Week" is that they feel it was wrong for Randi to have to apologize period. He is a morning DJ and his job is comedy - sometimes the comedy is at the expense of the caller.
My uncle lives in Mastic and I know for a fact that although it's not the most wonderful area, but there aren't any trailer parks either. It was a stupid joke and radio is supposed to be free speech.

Making DJ's apologize or firing them for making jokes is ludicrous. When did we all get so sensitive that we can't deal with a joke in any way, shape or form. The ONLY reason O & A are doing this is to mock the fact that this guy almost got fired for doing his job.

Personally, I have nothing against Mastic, but I do have something against the way people have gotten to the point of ultra-sensitivity in almost every respect.
