Re: Good hospital for delivering baby
When I lived on Long Island I delivered at LIJ. Did I love he place? Eh... It was ok. I hated having a roommate and it was beyond busy the time I delivered. May of 09. The staff was awesome and I Love my OB. That's the thing... Look for an OB you will love and be comfortable with and worry about the hospital later. Hospital stay is 2 to 4 days... Depending. The OB is the one you see for 9 months. The positive part of LIJ is they have a great NICU. Oh, I did hear the new wing for maternity is awesome. For DS 2 I delivered in nj bc that's where we live now. I did have a private room there and the experience overall was better, but like I said... Love your OB first and worry about hospital later. Btw... I had dr Cohen of women's health and wellness. I think that's it. He's got an office in Woodbury and I believe great neck.

I disagree about the hospital. If you have any fears pick the best hospital snd a great doctor affiliated with them. I had a really bad experience with the hospital my ds was delivered in. He was in the nicu for 2 months and he was eventually transferred but I regretted not being at the best hospital.
My new doctor is dr. Klein and he is with north shore manhasset.

Re: Good hospital for delivering baby
It's very, very hard to choose a "best" hospital. Even the selection criteria for best for US News Reports is not necessarily what would be important to someone delivering a baby.
Choose your dr. Choose someone who you trust. Choose someone who you trust to cut you open because that's what may very likely occur. That person's judgement is what birth will be about. To choose a good doctor, ask the friends you trust. Ask on here. The reviews online are useless (happy people don't post) and malpractice cases are just a sign, on the most part, of how long they are practicing.
If you are high risk, go to a big university with a NICU. If you are not, a NICU is a good backup (needed a doc at both of my deliveries).
If you like epidural free births, etc. choose a place that has those facilities (but more important, a doctor that will be comfortable with that).
Whatever you do, don't choose a hospital based on service, room look, etc. and choose your doctor that way. It's not a hotel stay.

In Nassau, Withrop is one of the best. My OB/GYN is in Garden City and they deliver at Winthrop only.
ITA, only wanted to deliver there.

Re: Good hospital for delivering baby
It seems as if LIJ, NSUH and Winthrop are rated the same. How do people know that Winthrop the best?

Good hospital for delivering baby
I delivered with Melanie Summersille, a certified nurse midwife. She practices with Garden City OBGYN, 2 docs in the office. All my appts and my delivery were with her (not the docs, but they are there to back her up if need be). I had a great, natural birth with her. She delivers at Winthrop. (I have heard other stories about Winthrop that are not so natural-birth friendly, with other providers, so if it were me, I would be careful with Winthrop otherwise...) GL!

Re: Good hospital for delivering baby
I delivered at North Shore in Manhasset in 2010 and will be back again with #2 in the next 3 weeks (let's hope real soon)!!! I had a GREAT experience the first time, the nurses were amazing and of course, so was my doc, Dr. Richard Trongone. He is off Northern Blvd in Manhasset and is simply the BEST! Most of the nurses and soon techs use him for ob/gyn...that's tells ya ALOT! I can't wait to experience the new rooms now...I'm beyond excited!

I just delivered at NSUH in Manhasset in September and I absolutely HATED it, it was the worst experience ever and I am very disappointed. A private room was the only good part if it . I may be the only person in NY who feels this way , but my stay there was just horrible, terrible nurses, terrible " service" . I was supposed to stay 4 days but I left on the third day , in the afternoon. Couldn't wait to get out of there.
ITA - The L&D suite and nurse were awesome and the private room was absolutely great, but starting on Day 2, the nursing staff and "service" was really disappointing. On the 2nd night, I actually changed my own sheets on my bed while a nurse stood there and watched me. (I know nurses don't change sheets, but she could have gotten someone there to do it) Food delivery took forever and the nurses were very scarce. Took 6 hours to get a breast pump, and when it came at 11:30pm the nurse was annoyed that I didn't want to wake up and use it.
Discharge was a nightmare - My doc signed off on me leaving around 7:30am, but the nurse didn't come back until maybe 11:30am to do it. Then she forgot to give me an important paper that I needed to get my DD on or insurance. I had to go back up to medical records to request it and ended up having to pay for it!
I thought I was alone in that I didn't have a super great experience with my stay!
ETA - My OB/GYN is Dr Jessica Jacob. Sometimes a long wait in the office - but she is amazing! Only delivers at North Shore Manhasset.
yes, nurses took forever with everything and they would get so annoyed when I asked them for something (something that is their job) First of all I delivered at 8:19 am and was in recovery room until 4:30 pm bc they didn't have any private rooms available, I didn't hold / feed my baby for 8 hours, basically I held him for 2 sec when I delivered and that was it . I asked them about the baby and they kept telling me he was fine and I would see him soon, "soon" turned into hours and hours, 3 times " a room became available" but 3 times they said it was a mistake or a mix up. My machine that was connected to an IV kept going off, horrible beeping sound, every hour or so, waking me and the baby up and it took them 30 min or more for a nurse to come in and turn it off each time, if I asked for medication or any kind of help they took forever, it also took them forever to bring me the baby each time I wanted to feed, so I ended up keeping the baby with me once they took out the pain med IV out of my spine. I can go on and on, it was terrible, terrible experience and they brought me close to tears few times. Also according to the nurses they -and my dr- didn't leave notes so they kept asking me all the questions over and over, by the end of 2nd day I was exhausted , frustrated, overwhelmed and wanted to get out of there ...

NORTH SHORE HANDS DOWN!
I had to scream that because it was just that amazing. As the previous posted stated, great rooms, great food, etc. But they also have a high level of care for you and the baby. I had wonderful medical care there. and they have a great nicu too (just in case, you never know) but that is important.
