Re: Groceries
We spend about $250 a week for a family of 4. That figure including a some cleaning supplies. Dh spends about another $25-$75 a week for lunch depending on how often he eats out.

I like stews when they have lobsters on sale for 4.99 and their produce. I have been shopping at best market in great neck a lot. They have awesome deals but the best steak is at fairway. I also live across the street from Fairway which makes my shopping trips more frequent. Stopped in last night for sushi, a bag of pretzels and a pound of shrimp and it was approx $60. I noticed 5 more charges on my cc from grocery stores since July 28. Not normal!
Have you also tried the steaks at Stews? Their porters and ribeyes are a pretty good deal when they go on sale...

Is it bad that i have no idea what we spend? We just go to the store when we need stuff and buy whatever we need. I dont' even think we shop every week. Just at random. I haven't a clue what we spend a week, a month, a year on groceries And I would imagine it would be different all the time depending on what we are in the mood for that week.
Same here.
We also stock up on certain meats when they are on sale and freeze them.
I can go to the supermarket 3x a week and one day would just be for waffles and muffins.

And if you asked me what I spent at Target it could easily top $500 and up a month!

Groceries
I try to keep it at 130 a week for our family of 4. We rarely eat out any meals or even get coffee out. We do spend another $75ish on coffee and granola bars from amazon each month. I meal plan and I find that shopping once a month and sticking to only one store where I know the prices, products, quality help me keep my spending down.

Re: Groceries
2-250 per week on food for 4. It's way too much. We have meat (steak, chicken, or suasage) with every dinner, that gets expensive. We go through eggs, milk, and snacks like crazy with 2 boys.my older one is always in the fridge, my younger always in the pantry looking for eats. DH eats all meals from home too so it's a lot. Shop at Stew's, fairway , and shoprite

Re: Groceries
That sounds pretty high. We're a family of 3 and we spend around $130/week on groceries (not including beer, which DH gets weekly from the distributor). I consider "grocery shopping" to be all the food, plus also cleaning supplies, and household necessities like toilet paper, tissues, detergents, etc. So, that $130/week usually is not JUST food. We do try to shop once every 2 months at Costco for certain things in bulk, like paper towels, some meats, etc. and spend about $80. That does help to keep our weekly groceries down a bit.
I will say, I think a lot of it has to do with WHERE you shop. I find that Shoprite has great sales, reasonable prices, etc. But places like Whole Foods, Stop N Shop, Fairway, even A&P tend to be much pricier. When I do shop at Stop N Shop, for the same exact items, I spend much more. My $130 weekly shopping is more like $160 - $180.

ITA that it depends on where you shop. We used to go to Stop & Shop and spent like $150 on average. Then, we started to not like their meats, so we switched to a local supermarket and spend $200 a week easily. Sucks...

Re: Groceries
Ive noticed grocery prices definitely increased over the past year or two. My weekly bill went up at least $50 per week buying mostly the same stuff. We are a family of 4 and with 2 growing kids and an active husband, they are eating constantly. I shop Sunday and by Friday cupboards are bare. I work full time so I cannot spend my entire weekend driving around LI to 3 different stores to save money. We spend about $200 per week but that includes non-food items like cleaning supplies, toiletries etc.

Re: Groceries
That's pretty much what I spend but every 2 weeks. 2 adults and 2 little ones. I do my grocery shopping at trader joes for the most part, a few things at whole foods, and a couple of things at stop and shop. Oh and I only buy certain things organic, I usually follow the dirty dozen.

Groceries
So, since having DD (who is 5 months old), I have been doing all of my grocery shopping on peapod (too hard to grocery shop with her and I work so I dont want to spend the weekend food shopping instead of spending time with her) --- I like peapod because I can see what I am spending as I am "shopping" -- I then take things out or make different choices if I see that number rise higher than I really want to spend for the week. When I go food shopping and put it in the cart, I have no clue what I'm spending until I pay for it. So, just a suggestion that you may want to try an online service like peapod to help you budget/buy in a range that you are comfortable with instead of being surprised at the register.

Groceries
I don't know exact numbers- we don't shop weekly. But, to save $$, we shop staples (rice/frozen items/snacks/cereal)at Aldi- we go every 2-3 weeks. We only eat chicken/turkey/fish (no other meats)- so we get that usually at Costco in bulk. Including the fish. I portion it out and freeze. We go maybe once every 4-6 weeks. I buy fruits and veggies from my local fruit/veggie cart (we live in LIC) based on what looks good and only for the next few days or it goes bad. We also grow tons of veggies in the summer- so that changes the bill. I hit up Trader Joes maybe once a month or every other month. I rarely step into regular grocery stores-- sometimes the keyfood by me when there are good items on sale. I really don't buy excess- I used to do that and my bills were crazy and we wasted a lot of food. I stick to the same items most of the time. We try to bring breakfast/lunch to work most times- breakfast is either yogurt (when it's on sale) and fruit, or overnight oats or a breakfast bar & fruit or hard boiled eggs. Lunch is leftovers or sandwiches. snacks - I get nuts at Tjs, bulk items at Costco - like fiber one bars or fruit. there are definitely weeks where I don't feel like doing a big shopping or I don't have time and end up spending more on takeout, prepared items from our local gourmet store....but in the end it evens out. Cleaning supplies and that kind of stuff is separate and I get at Costco or Amazon.

Groceries
I'd say I spend about that per week for DH and I. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but that # doesn't sound astronomical to me at all. I shop mostly at Iavarone and North Shore Farms with occasional trips to Trader Joe's for snacks and BJs for staples. I very rarely go to a regular supermarket like S&S. Now that DD is eating more table food I mostly buy organic produce at Whole Foods (before I bought whatever was on sale at Iavarone or North Shore Farms).
I don't know where some of you guys are shopping or what you're eating to have such small grocery bills!

Seriously!!
I've worked hard to establish a system, and I *think* I finally found something that works, but it's a bit OCD
I plan everything out for the week..
I made a list of breakfast, lunch, and snack ideas. I choose 3-4 from each list to use for the week depending on what mood I'm in, but all are served with fresh fruit
For dinner, I came up with 31 meal ideas, although some are "leftovers" and some are "try a new recipe."
Then, I've been doing the following:
Weekly Peapod delivery Every other week I try to make it to either Target, Trader Joes, or Whole Foods on a rotating basis. Delivery of Honest Company stuff every 6 weeks or so (makeup remover, dishwasher pods, laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner, shave cream, cleaners-I get all of these things from them, and it costs about $50 every 6 weeks)
For example, this week:
Breakfast Choices: Waffles w/ Fresh Fruit, Cereal w/ Fresh Fruit, Egg Omelets w/Fresh Fruit
Lunch Choices: Hot Dogs w/Veggies, Leftovers, Quesadillas w/Veggies, Mac n Cheese w/Veggies (all also served w/fruit)
Snacks (we all tend to snack a bit): Fruit again, baby carrots, Homemade chocolate pudding, goldfish, granola bars, pretzels, raisins, ice pops, organic bunnies
Monday dinner: Rotisserie chicken with zucchini orzotto Tuesday dinner: Pasta Fagioli Wednesday dinner: Leftovers Thursday dinner: still had leftovers Friday dinner: Salmon packets Saturday dinner: Italian Wedding Soup Sunday dinner: At in-laws
My peapod order this week was delivered on Monday and was $79.28 (which was a cheap week bc I already had some of the stuff in the house)
I got:
3 containers organic juice 1 box organic cereal 2 boxes organic waffles 1 container organic milk slow cooker liners glass cooktop spray 1 pack organic hot dogs 1 rotisserie chicken 1 pint blueberries 2 lbs grapes 1 mango 1/4 watermelon 1 container organic spinach 6 organic peaches 1 yellow squash 1 lb organic strawberries 2 boxes annie's organic bunnies 1 box organic animal crackers 6 pk organic raisins 1 bag organic pretzels
I do have to go to Whole Foods tomorrow for the Salmon, and I'll probably pick up a few things for next week while I'm there, but I will probably only spend about $30-$40. Any other ingredient for the meals listed I had in either my pantry, fridge, or freezer already.
And this was super long
