I budget $125/ week for a family of 3 plus a dog who gets cooked for
Dh buys lunch daily in the city, but I buy him weekly snacks for work to take in each week.
And we eat 90% organic!
How is this possible? Where do you shop? What do you buy? I need some tips
Seriously!!
I've worked hard to establish a system, and I *think* I finally found something that works, but it's a bit OCD
I plan everything out for the week..
I made a list of breakfast, lunch, and snack ideas. I choose 3-4 from each list to use for the week depending on what mood I'm in, but all are served with fresh fruit
For dinner, I came up with 31 meal ideas, although some are "leftovers" and some are "try a new recipe."
Then, I've been doing the following:
Weekly Peapod delivery Every other week I try to make it to either Target, Trader Joes, or Whole Foods on a rotating basis. Delivery of Honest Company stuff every 6 weeks or so (makeup remover, dishwasher pods, laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner, shave cream, cleaners-I get all of these things from them, and it costs about $50 every 6 weeks)
For example, this week:
Breakfast Choices: Waffles w/ Fresh Fruit, Cereal w/ Fresh Fruit, Egg Omelets w/Fresh Fruit
Lunch Choices: Hot Dogs w/Veggies, Leftovers, Quesadillas w/Veggies, Mac n Cheese w/Veggies (all also served w/fruit)
Snacks (we all tend to snack a bit): Fruit again, baby carrots, Homemade chocolate pudding, goldfish, granola bars, pretzels, raisins, ice pops, organic bunnies
Monday dinner: Rotisserie chicken with zucchini orzotto Tuesday dinner: Pasta Fagioli Wednesday dinner: Leftovers Thursday dinner: still had leftovers Friday dinner: Salmon packets Saturday dinner: Italian Wedding Soup Sunday dinner: At in-laws
My peapod order this week was delivered on Monday and was $79.28 (which was a cheap week bc I already had some of the stuff in the house)
I got:
3 containers organic juice 1 box organic cereal 2 boxes organic waffles 1 container organic milk slow cooker liners glass cooktop spray 1 pack organic hot dogs 1 rotisserie chicken 1 pint blueberries 2 lbs grapes 1 mango 1/4 watermelon 1 container organic spinach 6 organic peaches 1 yellow squash 1 lb organic strawberries 2 boxes annie's organic bunnies 1 box organic animal crackers 6 pk organic raisins 1 bag organic pretzels
I do have to go to Whole Foods tomorrow for the Salmon, and I'll probably pick up a few things for next week while I'm there, but I will probably only spend about $30-$40. Any other ingredient for the meals listed I had in either my pantry, fridge, or freezer already.
And this was super long
Hardly any protein... Lol def ssves when you dont buy a lot of meat My husband can eat 3/4 of a london broil himself lol
We have organic eggs for breakfast and use 9 lol

So, since having DD (who is 5 months old), I have been doing all of my grocery shopping on peapod (too hard to grocery shop with her and I work so I dont want to spend the weekend food shopping instead of spending time with her) --- I like peapod because I can see what I am spending as I am "shopping" -- I then take things out or make different choices if I see that number rise higher than I really want to spend for the week. When I go food shopping and put it in the cart, I have no clue what I'm spending until I pay for it. So, just a suggestion that you may want to try an online service like peapod to help you budget/buy in a range that you are comfortable with instead of being surprised at the register.
Definitely this! Ordering online helps keep you in budget and actually lets you see what you are buying and how much you are spending.
I used FreshDirect when we were in BK and for a family of 3 it was around $150 a week. Now that we are on LI and I have so many supermarkets to shop at, I've been easily spending $200+ a week on groceries. I really need to start budgeting the same way or doing Peapod!

Groceries
I just went to Stop N Shop for bread and water and spent $50!!
I think I may start doing peapod.
When I lived in the city I did Fresh Direct and loved that it gave a running total that I could keep track of.

Re: Groceries
I think it sounds like a lot, but if that includes breakfast, lunch, dinners, and snacks? Not really, especially if you eat a lot of meat and fish.
I'm wondering if posters on here are living solely off their grocery spending for the week, doubt it.

If you're a big eater or work out a lot, 1 is not enough
I have 1 egg and 2 egg whites with 2 cups of spinach, a slice of Swiss cheese and an English muffin w cream cheese pretty much every single day. Some days I change the eggs to 2 sunny side up
I work out 5 days a week and lift heavy 2x per week. We eat a lot of protein here

She said her DH eats lunch out and if I remember correctly her DC is still young. Her cost and items purchased makes total sense. But for us, DDs are 10 and 13. I bring lunch, breakfast and snacks to work. Like you said we eat more protein plus half my cart is fresh fruits and veggies.

Between delivery fee, tip and limited selection (no store brand items) PP costs me more. The only advantage is that you don't impulse shop.

Thank you so much for posting this! It is very helpful and makes me realize we are lacking fruit in our diet. I need to offer fruit at breakfast every day so the kids learn to enjoy it.
One more question, do you buy the frozen salmon or fresh from WF? I used to buy fzn from Trader joes but haven't been able to get there

This is why I switched to Shoprite from Home. It's still a $10 fee but I get coupons all the time that cover it. Then I can also pick up the groceries at my leisure and am not stuck with a delivery time. Also, whatever is in that store location is available, unlike PP that comes from a warehouse. Also, regular sales apply because it comes directly out of the store.
To the OP, I would recommend trying it. I definitely save money given there are no impulse purchases and I can see how much I'm spending. I spend roughly $150/ week for a family of 4. We eat about half organic. I also stock up at sales.

Re: Groceries
I didn't read every response but overall you would benefit by adding more vegetarian meals into your rotation.
Breakfast for dinner, use beans as a protein, etc.
All that meat, poultry, and fish is adding up.

Groceries
I spend about $150-175 per week for a family of 3 (toddler). I make a lot of meals from scratch and we eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. I tend to buy very few things packaged. We rarely go out to eat. I grill chicken on Sundays and that's our lunch for the week. We either have it in a salad or on a wrap. For breakfast, we have oatmeal, peanut butter, and fruit.
Also- we eat way more than one egg. We do breakfast for lunch on the weekends and make 6 eggs with cheese on a bagel (and sometimes we're both still hungry - granted we workout out - a lot!) My 2 year old can easily polish off 2 eggs.

Re: Groceries
Just DH and I (and a baby who's still on the boob!) and we usually spend b/w $60-$90/week + maybe $50-$100 on meals out, depending on the week.
But we eat lots of chicken and don't mind doing it. Sounds like the variety and more pricey proteins might be part of it for you - you mentioned steak, lobster. We occasionally eat London Broil but very rarely have other steak. We do have shrimp sometimes, but mostly chicken and pork chops purchased in family packs when on sale. We also don't eat as many portions as I think some people do - the large chicken breasts, DH and I would split one of those.
But yeah, sale shopping and not minding eating the same thing.

I wish! My DD is 6 and is lucky if she eats a quarter of a muffin. Today we went to IHOP and she took 2 bites of a waffle, a bite of bacon, a bite of sausage and didn't touch the eggs. I wonder how she survives sometimes!
In regards to the eggs....if I am bringing a hard boiled egg to work then I will bring one. But I'm usually starving within an hour after that If I am home it's always 2 eggs, and if it's an omelette it's 2 eggs and some egg whites to make it more substantial. 1 scrambled egg is just tiny on the plate!

Re: Groceries
There are two of us and we spend about $160 a week. We have been doing Hello Fresh lately and that has helped. We get 5 meals of meat or vegetarian. With Hello Fresh, I've cut down on my meat intake.
That price also includes household supplies.
It doesn't include going out (we do this about 1-2 a week), lunch for DH, or lunch for me half the week. It does include breakfast. I don't buy organic because it's not better for the environment.
Like you, I like fancy meat or seafood. We go to the fancy seafood and meat place to get these about once a month or every other month. They cut the meat differently, so I need to get the cuts I like at this place. That can run 100-200 a month or every two months.

Is it bad that i have no idea what we spend? We just go to the store when we need stuff and buy whatever we need. I dont' even think we shop every week. Just at random. I haven't a clue what we spend a week, a month, a year on groceries And I would imagine it would be different all the time depending on what we are in the mood for that week.
Same here. We don't budget weekly or monthly for food, just buy what we want when we want it. I know we do eat take out way too often. I hate cooking but DH enjoys it.
